sholio: Ianto and Owen at the coffee machine (Torchwood-Owen & Ianto)
Thinking about Torchwood (as one does) ... I think one thing about this show that makes it so satisfying for me is that it doesn't hesitate to commit. Whether or not it makes narrative sense. And I was thinking about Owen's condemned man's walk in "Dead Man Walking" in light of that.

And have thoughts )

You know, I've been discussing this weird, iddy show in various comment threads in various places and I know a number of people who follow me have watched it or are watching it - so let's have a central discussion post. There will be spoilers for all seasons of the show in the comments.

If you have an observation on the show, anything you want to say - say it here. :)

Meanwhile I'll just use the comments to stash some of my own observations.

I've listened to several more of the Big Finish Torchwood audiodramas over the last few weeks. I still think the first two I listened to (the Gareth David Lloyd-written ones, The Last Beacon and Dinner & a Show) are my favorites - see review here - but I've really been enjoying (most of) the others as well. Here are my favorites and not-so-favorites of the next batch.

Favorites

Moving Target (Suzie) - I didn't expect to love the Suzie ones so much, but they're among the best of the bunch! I think it's partly that Indira Varma is terrific fun to listen to (she makes the best annoyed noises) but also that Suzie is so different from the other characters; she's very ruthless, driven, and isolated from her co-workers, and she has absolutely no compunctions about shoving people under the bus if she has to (quite literally, in one case). In this one, Suzie is on the run with a civilian who is being chased by alien hunters. It's part awkward buddy-movie and part action, very funny with some dark/sad moments and good character insights, and overall very enjoyable.

Sync (Suzie) - I didn't enjoy this one as much as Moving Target, but it was still fun. It's essentially the same plot (Suzie on the run with an unwanted companion, in this case a "handcuffed together" type of situation) but I found the secondary character much less charming and the plot somewhat muddled, especially at the beginning. It was still fun, though, and I liked the end enough to redeem some of my less-favorite aspects of the rest of it.

The Hope (Owen & Andy) - This is the second in a series of audios that teams them up (see review for the first one below, which I liked, but was way too dark for me to really love). This one, though, I thoroughly enjoyed. There's a pleasantly creepy, occasionally funny, very Stephen-King-esque plot involving Owen and Andy undercover in a prison, also featuring a serial killer and zombies, and it ended on a particularly lovely note that made me think I'd like to write a tag scene, which I almost never find myself compelled to do with tie-ins.

Cascade (Tosh) - This was SO FUCKING CREEPY. But very good! Tosh is investigating a haunted torrent download that seems to be killing people, and the audio itself takes the form of a "corrupted download" that mixes up past and present and occasionally pleads with the listener to stop listening because everyone who listens to it dies. And Tosh is completely delightful.

The Office of Never Was (Ianto) - This is really good and really entertaining, very funny in places, and also horribly bleak at the end, but, well, Torchwood. Ianto's dry, sarcastic narration is great.

Didn't enjoy that much

Corpse Day (Owen & Andy) - This is the first of the audios in which they work together, and actually is very good, but it is DARK AS FUCK. Like, imagine the darkest episode in the actual show, and then multiply it by 50x and a whole lotta trigger warnings. The plot involves spoilery trigger warnings ) Unlike "Believe," I didn't hate it - the characters are actually in character and aren't responsible for the dark content, and it has a lot of neat moments, especially with Owen getting to be awesome and empathic and hero-y, but ... SO DARK. GOOD LORD. I enjoyed listening to it once, and will probably never want to listen to it again.

Believe (entire team) - Okay, so this one ended up being a DNF. I'll get around to the rest of it eventually ... probably ... but I hated some of the plot. Jack is a giant asshole who lies to everyone, and there is a horribly squicky subplot in which spoilers for the Owen & Tosh subplot ) The only part of the plot I did like was Ianto going undercover in a cult, but unfortunately that was also mixed up with the "Jack is a huge asshole who never tells his team anything" aspect. I mean, it's nice to hear the entire team interacting with each other but NOT LIKE THIS.

Tropical Beach Sounds & Other Relaxing Seascapes - The concept (a haunted relaxation tape) is more compelling than the actual execution, which bored the heck out of me. Apparently I'm mainly in it to hear the characters' voices, and the third-party second-person POV combined with the extremely soporific narration style (I mean, it IS a relaxation tape, if a homicidal one) was really not my thing.

So on the whole, a few of them have failed to land for me, but there have been a lot more hits than misses! And there are still a bunch I haven't listened to yet.

Using a combination of Google and rec comms, I've been exploring Torchwood fic from ye olde internet, back in the 2007-2008-ish era of the original fandom. It's such a nostalgia trip. People rating fic R for language and including warnings about it. Multi-part fic posted across 5 or 10 LJ posts. Finding an absolutely brilliant little gem of a fic and then realizing that nothing in their journal is tagged, so you just have to look through every entry hoping you'll hit on something else relevant to your interests ...

The pre-AO3 days, y'all.

Other things I've found: so much Gwen-bashing. So much porn. Some familiar, half-forgotten LJ names from other fandoms. A surprising amount of love for Owen, who I remember being widely hated or at least unpopular when I fell head over heels for him and took my very brief 2008-era dip into the fandom. But the impression I'm getting now is that while a lot of people did dislike him or were at best neutral on him, a small corner of the fandom really loved him.

One thing that's been a little bit disconcerting about getting back into it after all these years is that the fandom pretty much loves the entire OG team equally now. It's nice. The early fandom feels much more brittle and divided, more ship-warry and just generally harsh.

Anyway, I'll do a recs post for what I've found soonish. I'm surprised how much of the fic is still online. I expected more dead links.

I don't normally get into browser games all that much, but a few years ago, when it got big, I was absolutely addicted to 2048. I finally managed to beat it enough times to feel like I could stop, and I never really enjoyed the fandom ones all that (I basically just loved the mechanics of the game; I found pictures of characters slightly distracting when I was trying to concentrate on the number combos) ... buuuut now I've found a Torchwood one. HELP.

So far my high score is 11556 and I've unlocked characters all the way up to Gwen. Send help.

I really appreciate the variety of characters they've got in here; it starts with Suzie and has a number of side characters before you start getting to the core team.

I also understand there's a Doctor Who one floating around somewhere.

Petition for Gareth David-Lloyd to write all Torchwood episodes forever.

Big Finish has audiodramas - basically radio plays, performed by the actors - for a number of BBC shows. I knew they did Doctor Who because I'd seen people talking about it, so it stood to reason they had Torchwood. Come to find out, Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto's actor) writes some of the Torchwood ones, and they are AMAZING. It is very clear that GDL's ideal Torchwood episode is, basically, Ianto hanging out and bantering with his teammates. Besides the fact that they're really funny, GDL's audiodrama episodes are also incredibly sweet; he does the relationship stuff very well too (and clearly headcanons Owen and Ianto as friends, and is going to make it happen, damn it).

The Last Beacon - Ianto and Owen pretend to be geocachers while searching for an alien artifact in rural Wales. All that "Danny and Ward road trip" fic I write ... that is THE EXACT VIBE of this. They bicker, get in bar fights, get rained on, fall off mountains, discover that there is Only One Hotel Room, etc. And there's some genuinely very good relationship development in the middle of it all.

Dinner and a Show - Tosh and Ianto end up at an alien-infested opera on Valentine's Day. This one is sadder and more wistful and darker than the above, but also very sweet and funny, and clearly in continuity with the above, since Ianto kind of gets Owen now, and that carries through into both a) trying to explain Owen to Tosh (which is funny and adorable and kind of sad), and b) getting closer to Tosh, too. (Also, Tosh stabs a guy in the face with her high-heeled shoe, then pulls out the shoe so she can stab more guys with it. I just needed to mention that.)

I just really, really loved these. They were as much fun as the best episodes of the actual show. I always loved the show best when it was less with the depressing and nonsensical plot twists, and more with the team just being a bunch of semi-competent idiots who loved each other, and that is entirely what these are (well, okay, Dinner and a Show is pretty depressing in places, but there's also a very warm vibe of the characters picking each other up afterwards).

I hope he does an Ianto & Gwen episode next. Or a full team one - that would be amazing. (Or just more, generally. I would shove fistfuls of money at Big Finish to give me another Ianto & Owen one.) I will be checking out the other ones, but from the descriptions I don't know if I'll love them as much as I loved these, because the friendship and banter was the real draw for me, and most of the others are solo adventures for various characters, or set during the time period when most of them are DEAD. It does look like there are a couple of team ones, though. And hearing their voices again is so nice.

ETA: Over on Tumblr, some musing on the character arcs in GDL's audiodramas.

Britpick?

May. 10th, 2020 11:35 am
sholio: (Torchwood-Owen)
... I don't suppose anyone might be available to Britpick a Torchwood fic for me? It's about 12K, heavy hurt/comfort with some blood and gore, mainly focused on Ianto and Owen in late season two, though the rest of the team is around. If you're not familiar with canon but might be interested in doing it anyway, I can give you a quick rundown of what you need to know (it's a pretty straightforward "team deals with weird sci-fi stuff" kind of show, with a couple of quirky aspects).

You know, something I've been thinking about rewatching the show ... over the past decade or so, I've started thinking of the MCU's interlaced storytelling as something really unique, but this show and the RTD-era DW-verse in general is exactly the same thing; Torchwood weaves in and out of the DW universe in exactly that way, with missing pieces of the story happening in other shows and DW characters like Martha showing up to cameo, years before the MCU showed up on the scene.
sholio: (Torchwood-Owen)
Having watched the "Dead Man Walking/Day in the Death" duology (Torchwood 2x07-08), I still think this is some of the most affecting, and perhaps among the best, sci-fi TV I've ever seen -- questionable special effects and occasionally questionable writing choices aside, it's just good. I think it might be the best Came Back Wrong story I've ever seen, certainly one of the only ones that's about learning to live with the Wrong rather than treating it as a convenient source of angsty My Friend/My Enemy cannon fodder or a plot-of-the-week that's resolved by the end.

It makes me think about just how much I love "learning to live with the terrible thing" as a narrative trope. It's certainly why I like stories about characters adapting to disabilities or trauma, but it's also something I truly love in various sci-fi and fantasy incarnations, especially the "but who am I?" version in which characters have to deal with navigating being a clone, a human weapon, a robot, or otherwise having their view of themselves undermined thoroughly by revelations about their true nature and/or other people messing with them for their entire life.

It's something I am continually disappointed by, in conventional TV sci-fi that enjoys fixing things by the end of the episode or else shuffling inconvenient clones/alternate-universe selves/robot doubles/etc offscreen to never deal with them again. I still remember very vividly one of the first times I really got hit with this feeling as a child, back in the '80s, watching that one Star Trek episode in which Q becomes temporarily depowered and then gets his powers back by the end of the episode. I can't even tell you how profoundly I did not want that ending; the story I wanted was the story of being a god, thinking of other beings as disposable, and then losing it all, becoming one of them, and having to learn to live with that.

Spoiler talk about Owen's arc in Torchwood season 2, and related tropes; discussion of suicide )

Look at that, I still have a Torchwood icon!

My sister is watching Torchwood for the first time and invited me to (long-distance) join her in a rewatch. We are currently up to 2x07, "Dead Man Walking," and I have fallen HARD into a waiting pit trap of feelings (with rusty spikes at the bottom). I had a very hard falling out with this show when they started killing off characters left and right, and haven't watched a single minute of it since Children of Earth, but now I'm remembering how much I loved this dumbass show and its sweetly earnest team dynamics back in the day. I don't expect this to be a long-term fandom for me, but it's a fun little nostalgic flirtation.

I've also gone poking around for fic, which I haven't read since 2008-ish (the pre-AO3 days!) and found some really good stuff. This is one of those fandoms where I'm out of step with most of what people are writing about; I enjoy everyone and all the canon pairings on the show, but ficwise my heart belongs to the Owen-Tosh-Ianto triad, and there is not really much there. However, some of what I found is really amazing.

Fic

Two of Us Are Hung From the Same Twisted Rope by [archiveofourown.org profile] ShastaFirecracker (15K, late season 2)
Alien tech leaves Ianto and Owen stuck in one body. This is probably hands down the best bodswap/body-sharing fic I have ever read. It's hilarious and heartbreaking and fantastically well written, Ianto and Owen are perfectly themselves, and the rest of the team is great too. The Jack/Ianto is also super sweet here. Seriously, I cannot rec this enough; I stayed up way too late last night reading it.

Welcome to Anger Management by [archiveofourown.org profile] engagemythrusters (2300 words, late season two)
Owen drags Ianto out for a drink ... well, Ianto drinks, Owen complains about not being able to drink. It's prickly and angry and sweet, and really nails their dynamic at its best.

Foreign Languages by [archiveofourown.org profile] starfishstar (500 words, pre-series to season 1-ish)
A series of drabbles about Jack getting to know the team through different languages. Insightful and nicely characterized.

Walking Wounded by [archiveofourown.org profile] cold_feets (5300 words, between seasons, Ianto/Owen, unfinished WIP)
So technically this is a never-finished WIP, so yeah. But the style is such that I'm not sure whether you ever could really tack an ending on; it's a series of vignettes about Ianto and Owen getting to know each other and comforting each other and kind of developing a fuckbuddy sort of thing after Jack leaves at the end of season one. And I love the pairing and there's really not much fic for it. (Yeah, so I could read the canon M/M juggernaut pairing that everyone loves and there are a squizillion fics for, or how about I go looking this almost nonexistent rarepair instead!).

Inappropriate Workplace Conversations by [archiveofourown.org profile] ShastaFirecracker (2500 words, early season 2)
Cute bantery teamfic in which the team speculates about Jack's prowess in bed, and Ianto refuses to confirm or deny allegations. Some sweet, hot Jack/Ianto at the end.

Trundling on by [archiveofourown.org profile] Cmdr_Spadge (1200 wds, season one-ish)
Slightly AU-ish; Owen and Ianto develop a grudging friendship in season one.

Okay, the Torchwood teaser makes it official: Torchwood is slash, of the crack variety. The UTTER CHEESE of it all! I still don't know if I'm going to be watching it ... probably I'll wait a few episodes to gauge the fannish reaction and see if it's worth it.

Barnes & Noble was having a sale on DVDs (buy 2, get one free) when I went in to pick up the next two seasons of NCIS (shut up. *g*) and I got the package set of Series 1 & 2 of Red Dwarf. I'm kinda surprised how little I remember the early episodes, since I remember the later ones so well -- but I guess it's been ten or fifteen years since I watched those early ones. Still as much fun as I remembered, though. Still got a wee crush on Craig Charles. (If only he was in something other than Coronation Street now, I would be all over it.) And whatever happened to the rest of them?
