sholio: sun on winter trees (Highlander-Methos sword)
*helpless giggling*

I was reading the Wikipedia article on Mary Shelley and ran across the following:

In December 1818, the Shelleys travelled south with Claire Clairmont and their servants to Naples, where they stayed for three months, receiving only one visitor, a physician.

Timeline-wise, this is a couple of years after the weekend retreat in which Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein. Highlander fans can probably guess EXACTLY where my mind went, particularly since the identity of the "physician" is not given. And I thought, awwwww! Methos stayed in touch with them!

It really didn't help that later, there was this bit:

In the mid-1840s, Mary Shelley found herself the target of three separate blackmailers. In 1845, an Italian political exile called Gatteschi, whom she had met in Paris, threatened to publish letters she had sent him. A friend of her son's bribed a police chief into seizing Gatteschi's papers, including the letters, which were then destroyed. Shortly afterwards, Mary Shelley bought some letters written by herself and Percy Bysshe Shelley from a man calling himself G. Byron and posing as the illegitimate son of the late Lord Byron.

OR MAYBE BYRON HIMSELF. (This is some 20 years after his RL death.)

I love how actual history is cooperating so nicely with Highlander pseudo-history here.

~~~
On a completely different note, curse you Facebook reading page for giving me a casting spoiler just now for one of my other shows that I could have gone ALL SUMMER without knowing. *facepalm* And now I'm going to be watching the rest of it knowing THAT and being sad and AAARGH.
Things which are embarrassing: writing a story, struggling with a title for a story, coming up with one I really like, posting it -- and then browsing back through the history of the archive where I posted it and discovering that someone else posted a story with that exact title (well, almost exact) just a couple of days ago. FAIL, SELF. I did that once in SGA too, and couldn't quite figure out how to deal with it. *flails, hides* It's not a case of conscious copying, more like fannish synchronicity, especially in this case since I didn't even know the other story existed. Anyway, I feel like apologizing to the original author, even though it's not like I did it on purpose? BUT STILL.
I'd really like to write more Highlander, but I'm having trouble coming up with ideas that aren't epic-length. Would anyone like to leave me some prompts? :) I'm not promising to write any of them (I actually have a terrible track record when it comes to writing from prompts, just FYI) but I'm looking for inspiration and I'm not above asking for it. *g* I'm currently underway in a big revision project on my original novel, so it's nice to have bite-sized little stories to work on; it makes me feel like I can actually finish something.
So give me a Highlander character or characters, and some sort of prompt: it can be something abstract and nonspecific, or a specific idea for a story or scene or episode tag or whatever that you might like to see me write ... I'm just floundering for ideas.
The Highlander DVDs have all the scripts. ALL THE SCRIPTS, YOU GUYS. And I, like the obsessed little fangirl I am, have been reading them.
In my defense (sort of), I'm basically skimming favorite scenes to see how things changed from the shooting script to the final version. The actors ad-lib a lot and it's fun to see what bits they put in. And, also, seeing the directions to the actors is really interesting because it gives me a better idea of where the writers were headed with the characters' motivations and so forth.
Still. PATHETICALLY OBSESSED, that is me.
I also ran into something at the end of "Forgive Us Our Trespasses" where some things were switched around and it actually changes the meaning of the scene a little bit, compared to how it was originally written. Further spoilery nattering under cut ... up to the series finale )
So somehow, going back and rewatching Jim Byrnes' Wiseguy episodes turned into making a vid about his Wiseguy character, Lifeguard. I still can't quite figure out how that happened.
Also? It's rather challenging to make a vid about a character who is basically a voice on the radio in four out of five episodes. I have lots and LOTS of clips of Lifeguard on the phone, Lifeguard in the communications loft, Lifeguard looking things up on the computer ... not really a whole lot of him actually doing anything, though.
Hmm. Anyway, a few more HL fanfic recs! All but one are older stories on the Seventh Dimension archive. 3 Alexa stories, 2 Richie stories, 1 long gen story.
You know, I'm pretty sure that the "Eeee! Little [actor] was so cute back then!" reaction is not supposed to happen when the actor in question is forty. But ... well. *g* He's just so young and adorable!
Highlander reawakened my old Jim Byrnes crush, so I've been going back to the show where I originally fell for him - Wiseguy - and watching a few episodes for nostalgia's sake. Which, incidentally, is reminding me all over again that Wiseguy's DVD releases are the MOST FRUSTRATING THING EVER. Why, why, why is "People Do It All the Time" not included in the "complete" DVD collection? I can understand why the Dead Dog Records arc isn't, because they couldn't secure rights to the music, but I am utterly at a loss for why they'd leave out "People Do It ..." (and frustrated, since it's one of the only TWO episodes in the whole series that's basically all Lifeguard all the time). At least Amazon has it streaming.
What's fascinating to me on the rewatch (besides how adorable Jim Byrnes is with long, dark hair) is how different Lifeguard is from Joe Dawson. Cutting the rest of this to avoid inadvertently spoiling people who haven't seen one or the other show - mild spoilers only - as well as not subjecting the rest of you to my ramblings *g* )
First off, I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH! to everyone who's given me recommendations for Highlander things. I do plan to go back to the last post and reply to all of you, but the reason why I haven't is because, well, I'm totally immersed in "Read ALL the things! Watch ALL the things!" mode. XD (Plus, there's this novel I'm supposed to be writing ...) So, thank you, and I'll catch up with you shortly. :)
In the meantime, a couple other Highlander things that have been bouncing around in my brain ...
The extended version of the final scene of the series finale )
Epic love stories and Highlander: a meta-ish sort of thought )
I am done with season 6! (Well, for certain values of "done".) Which means you don't have to deal with Psycho Spoiler Lady anymore, and I'm sure we're all glad of that. *g*
Spoilers for all of Highlander season 6 )
Okay - I am READY for fanstuff recs! I'm most interested in vids right now, actually - know any good ones? As far as fic goes, I will read any pairing, but I'm mostly interested in ensemble gen or mostly-gen stories: action, plotty stuff, character pieces, episode tags? Where are the archives, the rec lists, and so on and so forth? Guide me, please!
I'm not *that* interested in the Duncan/Methos pairing right now, not because I hate the idea but rather because I suspect that's the vast majority of what's out there, and I'd like to start my time in the fandom with a wider sampling. I'm also not that interested in AUs quite yet. But, seriously, if you have some brilliant fanworks in either one of these categories, don't let this stop you from reccing them (especially if it's an ensemble story with a little Duncan/Methos in the background; I'd be all over that -- or Duncan/Methos/Amanda, OMG, *want*). I mean, even if you rec me something I'm not quite ready for, I can always come back later, right?
I'm watching the rough cut of the Horsemen episodes with the commentary, and there are some cut scenes in the second episode that add quite a bit of context. )
