Seen on Tumblr:

"Fic that appears to be an AU where the characters have a little low stakes meet cute and are having a sweet little romance, only for it to be revealed that no, this is in-universe and they both have amnesia and all the other characters are trying to find them and are losing their fucking shit."

I think that I actually, unironically want this for Biggles. Imagine that they temporarily lose their leader and then he turns up running a flower shop with their worst enemy ...

(I think for MASH this scenario would just be too tragic to bear, however.)

A variety of things I have failed to link to in a timely fashion.

First of all, I participated in Blorbo Gets A Hug Flash Exchange, which has now had author reveals.

I wrote The Philosophy of Bedtime Stories (1300 wds, gen), in which we finally get to see Erich telling Biggles stories to kid!Fritz.

And I received To Tame a Fox (begin with hugs) by BardicRaven (900 wds, gen) in which post-Sakhalin Erich gets a series of hugs from various people!

Meanwhile over in Fic in a Box, although not officially signed up, I was treated with I Send a Letter to You (in the hopes that it will help) by Anon (1100 wds, gen) in which a grounded, depressed Biggles sends a letter to EvS.

And also in FIAB, the whole entire Erich-is-a-werewolf series (Von Stalwolf), written by me and others, has been podficced by an Anon!

One other thing I failed to mention is another recent gift outside of exchanges! I was delighted to receive the black sky and all those lights by dotsayers (6200 wds, Biggles/EvS and EvS/OMC, explicit) for my "von Stalhein seeks out rough/abusive sex" prompt in a recent prompt fest. <3

Many thanks to my Lovely Gifters for all of this bounty. There's also a glorious Biggles fic haul in FIAB, as the fandom has once again descended on an exchange like a swarm of fic-writing locusts.

Which anyone is welcome to save and use.

A vintage airplane flying against a backdrop of waterfalls and sunrise. Text says "Biggles Holiday Airdrop" and "A gift exchange for W E Johns Biggles books"

Holiday Airdrop on AO3. Signups close Nov. 15!

(I really should've posted places earlier, but the week fell on my head ...)

I posted to Fandom Calendar and a rebloggable Tumblr post.

I have also been experiencing GREAT JOY in [personal profile] ysande's post on Biggles Buries a Hatchet (first half of book).
sholio: aged sepia paper with printed text saying "If undelivered, return to Air Ministry, London" (Biggles-london air ministry)
While we are all frantically writing for the proximity flash and waiting for a bite-sized candy box of fic to fall on us, I wrote a short thing:

Crime and Punishment (600 wds, Biggles & EvS)
Von Stalhein has a question for Biggles.

It's just a little scene that's been in my head for a while, I thought would probably end up belonging to a longer fic, but when I wrote it, it feels complete on its own.

Meanwhile on Facebook, someone I follow linked to this local event, which obviously made me instantly think of Guess Who:

The Great Interior Pumpkin Drop is back at Bradley Sky Ranch (95Z) for 2024! Open to aviation enthusiasts as well as family, friends, and the broader Alaskan Community, come join us for a day of amazing aviators, local musicians and food trucks, and games and activities for the whole family.

Pilots: Try your luck or skill at dropping pumpkins from your airplane! The target zone will be a 100 foot circle. Winner is the closest to the center. It is a lot harder to judge when to drop than it looks! Prizes for first, second, and third place will be awarded.

DROPPING A PUMPKIN FROM AN AIRPLANE ON A TARGET. And they're inviting any rando with an pilot's license who wants to participate. 🤣

I desperately want Biggles doing this. As Sheron said when I showed this to her, this sounds exactly like something they did during WWI ...
sholio: Peggy, Jack, and Daniel from Agent Carter (Avengers-Agent Carter OT3 2)
I got some new comments on Navy Cross, the Agent Carter story I wrote back in 2016 in which Jack is exposed to lethal doses of radiation (contains no actual character death, due to handwavy MCU science), and I reread it and really enjoyed it. I genuinely think I did some of my best writing in that fandom. (Also, now that I've experienced a major health crisis, I think it's kind of hilarious how I nailed my own emotional reactions to it almost exactly in that story - I don't think there's anything I would write differently now.)

[personal profile] sheron reminded me that Biggles, even in middle age, is canonically a bit of a hottie. From Biggles Goes Alone:

Her name was Vera Harrington. A vivacious brunette with a ready smile, quick-witted, always well dressed and neatly groomed, she was undeniably attractive, so it was easy to understand why Paul was obviously more than a little interested in her. According to Gower she had for a time worked in London as a model, but having decided she preferred a country life she had returned to her mother, who had a house in the village and at that time was still alive. Biggles knew her well by sight, but had never spoken to her, Paul having pointedly declined to make the introduction.

He's the guy you don't introduce your girl to. XD

It's been a bit of an animal-lite summer so far, but as well as the moose, I heard a pair of boreal owls calling while I was out walking around yesterday evening (or maybe 1 owl, or 12 owls, it was sort of hard to tell because the call was deceptive and seemed to be coming from all over). I've occasionally heard them very far away - it's a unique call that sounds absolutely nothing like an owl, a yodeling sound (Orion said he thinks they sound like Muppets XD) - but this was by far the closest I've ever heard them. I spent some time trying to see if I could see them, because apparently they're rarely seen; they're a small, shy, nocturnal owl, and it would be really neat to see one. Alas, wherever it/they were, it wasn't close enough to see. But that was neat! Boreal owls use woodpecker holes for nests, and we've had a ton of those around lately due to the leaf-miner-related aspen die-off, so it makes sense that a pair might be nesting around here.

I saw and heard great horned owls quite a bit early in the spring, so evidently it's a good owl year.

I decided to sign up for a field sketching class in July. This is kind of a gamble, because I'm having to go out of town a lot for family stuff right now (aging parents and health/life/etc issues, nothing really bad, but they need me around a lot more than they used to). I have decided to cross my fingers and gamble that I can get two uninterupted weeks in the middle of July. TBH I think they'll be willing to work with me on this, because they know they've been imposing on me a bit lately.

*

That being said, though, my trips out of town this spring have really helped a lot with the burnout that crashed down on me like a ton of bricks in the middle of winter, and I'm writing much more easily. I'm really looking forward to reveals for both [community profile] fluffityfluffexchange and [community profile] hurtcomfortex, I'm also signed up for [community profile] justmarriedexchange and [personal profile] summerofhorrorexchange. Fingers crossed this isn't too much, but so far it hasn't been, and it's nice to be back in the exchange ecosystem again.
sholio: blue and yellow airplane flying (Biggles-Biplane)
Our second comment promptfest is now ongoing at [community profile] bigglesevents: Biggles Cuddle Fest (aka Cuddles4Biggles). Rules are over there and are pretty basic and similar to the previous Smut4Biggles comment fest. Let me know if you have any questions!
sholio: two men on horseback in the desert (Biggles-on a horse)
I started rereading Biggles Takes a Hand this week and I suppose everyone will be shocked, SHOCKED if I decide to ramble on about the lunch scene under the cut.

'It isn’t often I get a letter here' )
sholio: airplane flying away from a tan colored castle (Biggles-castle airplane)
[personal profile] philomytha posted recently about a WW1-era pulp novel in which the hero has an airplane silencer and it occurred to me that this sounds EXACTLY like a maguffin that would be perfect for the "but why are they actually there??" handwave in Biggles fic that kicks off the mission. I can't believe it's not in any of the actual books.

And then it occurred to me that crowdsourcing a list of maguffin ideas also might be fun, considering that about 90% of the fic I write that has any casefic plot at all basically starts out with "first they're lost in the woods and then someone almost drowns and then the other person breaks a leg..." and eventually meanders around to "Wait, why are they there, anyway?" There are only so many secret labs and abandoned WW2 munitions bunkers that you can have characters investigate before something new is needed. And it might be a nice fandom resource to have handy for everyone to use.

So we've got airplane silencers, what else?

(Edit: I think I may have mistakenly implied "things from real movies/books" - I really just meant anything you can make up off the top of your head that's period-appropriate! They can be inspired by something from a real canon but they don't have to be ...)

p.s. Signups for Hurt/Comfort Exchange close in 4 hours if you want to slip one in there ...
sholio: airplane flying away from a tan colored castle (Biggles-castle airplane)
Just a reminder that Smut4Biggles is still going on, with lots of available prompts (new prompts also happily accepted!) and an updated list of fills.

I plan on trying to fill a couple more prompts over the weekend, but there are no particular intentions to close the fest anytime soon; it can stay open as long as there's interest.

(Also, a Cuddles4Biggles fest has been discussed and I've already offered to run it ...)
sholio: aged sepia paper with printed text saying "If undelivered, return to Air Ministry, London" (Biggles-london air ministry)
There is now a masterlist post collecting and linking to prompt fills, which I will update as new fills come in.

On a non-smutty front, don't miss a new continuation snippet by [personal profile] philomytha of the Febuwhump snippet I posted last night!
sholio: aged sepia paper with printed text saying "If undelivered, return to Air Ministry, London" (Biggles-london air ministry)
So after I wrote my time loop ficlet for Febuwhump, [personal profile] philomytha wrote another loop in the same set of loops in which things do not go At All Well (character death warning) and then [personal profile] rosanicus added another time loop (different looping this time) in which Erich is fraying a bit under the stress. I can only say that I approve of this trend and may be having more time loop thoughts now.
sholio: blue and yellow airplane flying (Biggles-Biplane)
If the Febuwhump ficlets are leaving you hungry for more (and do check out the latest offerings in the AO3 tag, there have been several fics posted lately with several different pairings!), there's also some short fic from the last couple of days on DW:

• [personal profile] philomytha posted a lovely short fic in which Erich leaves a goodbye note and departs England, and Biggles naturally is not prepared to take this at face value; also, I added a commentfic snippet sequel in the comments because Fluff Was Needed.

• [personal profile] rietta89 posted a delightful bantery ficlet in which EvS almost gets involved in a duel for Biggles's honor.

What a lovely little fandom this is. ♥
sholio: two men on horseback in the desert (Biggles-on a horse)
I got tagged for this on Tumblr, but I figured I'd do it over here, in part because maybe talking about it in a place where I'm more likely to be able to find this post again will be more likely to make me finish things. Also, I wanted to post more on DW this month anyway.

What am I working on ...? )

Encouragement and votes for what I should try to finish first are cheerfully accepted!

(I also have non-Biggles WIPs, but let's face it, these are the ones on the front burner right now.)
sholio: two men on horseback in the desert (Biggles-on a horse)
I received a breathtaking bounty of gifts in Holiday Airdrop! From shortest to longest because why not:

Vier (900 wds, EvS + team)
Biggles is in the hospital and his team insists that EvS sit with him too. Sweet and lovely Erich + team bonding.

The Christmas Lily (1300 wds, EvS + Biggles + team, 1930s era)
Based on a conversation some time back in my DW about Christmas Pollen, which is like sex pollen but it gets you in the Spirit of Christmas. Hilarious and adorable.

Old Habits (1600 wds, Biggles/EvS, mature)
Major Sterne interrogates Lt. Brunow. Sexily. <3333
SpoilerIt's actually a late-in-series established relationship roleplay scenario, and a thoroughly in-character, tender and adorable one.

Good Enough (1700 wds, Algy + Biggles/EvS, mature)
Algy comes to terms with the fact that EvS clearly makes Biggles happy, however weird it may be. Hilarious, sweet, and hot.

So I'm still overwhelmed with the generosity and delight of all this, and I haven't even read the rest of the offerings yet!

***

I also have some links I'm shoehorning into this post as well:

• Today is More Joy Day! A good opportunity to do something to make someone's life a little more joyous.

• Three Sentence Ficathon is going on again! (And already up to 22 pages of comments despite having just started today.)

• [personal profile] quillpunk made a comprehensive table of fandom exchanges with their approximate run dates, just in case anyone is currently suffering from too much free time.
sholio: pen and ink drawing of the four main Biggles characters (Biggles-team)
I never really noticed this before, and it's interesting to me. This is Bertie and Ginger talking about newly arrived reinforcements:

‘Don’t tell me they are pals of von Stalhein,’ said Bertie, in a startled voice.

‘They’re more likely to be pals of Zorotov.’

‘D’you know, old boy, I believe you’re right,’ returned Bertie slowly.

I think it's interesting that even Biggles's friends (at least some of the time) draw a distinction between Erich and the people he's working with.
sholio: airplane flying away from a tan colored castle (Biggles-castle airplane)
I finished a draft and got the book off to beta/edits today. Now I am pondering what to do with my day off tomorrow. (It will definitely involve fanfic.)

I honestly think that of all the fic I posted last year, the very last one - the New Year's one - might be one of my favorites of the year, because somehow EvS standing in the rain like a wet Dickens orphan and watching Biggles's team celebrate through the window is peak late-in-series EvS. (Of course it wouldn't be any fun if he didn't get to come inside.)

The current prompt at [community profile] fan_flashworks (old school flashfic-and-other-media prompt comm; new prompts every ten days) is "Looking Back", and I am direly tempted to write something Biggles for it. But there is also Holiday Airdrop ...
sholio: Red ball with snow (Christmas ornament)
Let's talk about Holidays! Christmas or whatever. Specifically what our fandom faves are doing for their holidays, whatever those may be.

Obviously I came in here wanting to chat about the Biggles crew - what do they do for Christmas, do they have EvS over, does Algy ever stop being annoyed by this, etc...? Do you have any thoughts about things they would have particular feelings about at the holidays? Tell me your thoughts, please!

But also, feel free to tell me all your headcanons about your current faves at their holidays, from whatever your current fandom is, and whatever their holidays are. Do they give gifts, and to whom? Does your canon have a holiday episode, and is it any good? Does your fandom have festive fic, or is it just not really a thing?
sholio: airplane flying away from a tan colored castle (Biggles-castle airplane)
Amperslash - the exchange for ambiguous "is it a & or a /" relationships - revealed today! There are a delightful 11 Biggles fics in the collection, and my gift is a delight.

By the Fireside - 8K of teamy, warm, Biggles/EvS-ish post-Buries a Hatchet sickfic and recovery h/c with Biggles being wonderfully himself (i.e. determined to do the right thing, if he can just figure out what that is) and EvS being adorably baffled at anyone being nice to him at all, let alone burying him in fluffy duvets and pillows and giving him tea and soup. This is a fluffy warm blanket of a fic and I enjoyed it utterly.

(I haven't even got through the FIAB collection yet! Truly we are enjoying an embarrassment of ficcish riches this holiday season.)
