HI INTERNET. I'm feeling chatty, I think, courtesy of way too much tea, and none of my writing projects offering me much inspiration at the moment ...

Posting stories to [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon by myself this year has not been a problem at all. I was reluctant to try it because the first year was such a nightmare (... some of you probably remember me sobbing on your virtual shoulder), and ever since then I've always tried to have at least one co-mod to help me, but this year has been a total breeze, even having added a whole new component to the fest (the artwork).

Partly it's because [livejournal.com profile] leesa_perrie, wonderful person that she is, stepped up to do the part I really didn't want to do ... matching artists and authors. But otherwise, I think it's just because a) I know what I'm doing now (seriously, posting stories is SUCH A BREEZE compared to how it used to be), and b) I've lightened up a LOT about chasing down defaulting writers and whatnot. The first year, I tried to cover every single defaulter with a pinch hitter; it took me a year or two to sit down and go "WHY ON EARTH AM I DOING THIS" ... since it's a prompt fest, not a fic exchange, there is no reason whatsoever to make more work and stress for myself by trying to arrange pinch hitters. And this year, I haven't even tried to chase down authors and ask them if they needed an extension, or any of the other things along those lines that I used to do that would always up my stress levels. I really appreciate the people who did write to let me know that they were going to drop out, but honestly, it's been SO low-stress for me and, I hope, for everyone else. Plus, using a dedicated Gmail address this year, I just file the emails from the authors and artists into their respective folders (rather than plucking out the fics and putting them in Google Docs or filing them on my hard drive like I used to). SO EASY!

Other stuff:

Check out this awesome Iron Man vid (first movie only). Very well-edited, and bouncy and exciting and fun. And if there ever was a more perfect song for Tony Stark, I can't imagine what it could be.

Here's a totally different cool thing: 385 Free Online Courses from Top Universities. Now I want to learn ALL the things!

Browsing sga_santa, I noticed one of the mods saying something that made me realize I may have been doing Genficathon the STUPID WAY all these years. Does anyone on my flist have enough experience with moderated comms to tell me if this would work?

I'm thinking that I ought to be able to set the comm to moderated status (so that posts have to be approved in order to appear), and then troubleshoot, code and post each entry as I get it; then all I have to do when it's time to make them go live is release a couple from the moderation queue each day. All the work is already done.

Is there some really obvious problem that I'm overlooking here, or would this totally work?

[livejournal.com profile] tridget guessed my story correctly in the Genficathon, so I offered a ficlet of her choice, and she asked for:

"...a scene between Sheppard and Caldwell - something gen - and while they are not exactly buddies I'd like to see a scene that captures a little of the positive aspects of that relationship."

Hopefully this suits! Search & Rescue tag, gen, untitled, ~1300 words.

2010 Genficathon signups are here!

Signups will close on Friday, Feb. 26 (a week from today) at midnight AK time. Stories are due Saturday, May 22, and will begin posting anonymously on Monday, May 24.

There are a few rule changes for this year, including the ability to pick your own prompt or have one assigned; a lower minimum word count (1000 wds rather than 2000 wds); and accepting multiple stories for the same prompt. There will be no pinch hits this year; I'm trying to make the ficathon lower-pressure (for me, and the writers *g*). There aren't any penalties if you have to drop out.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or over there (comments are screened at the sign-up post) or PM me.

Genficathon yay! *\o/*

I will be running SGA Genficathon again this year (probably with some help for the posting part of things, though I'm less insanely busy than last year and more capable of being closely involved).

Signups will open in early February. In the meantime, I have posted a list of changes to the rules (most quite minor, based on people's feedback and on past Genficathons), and a prompt collecting post. The prompts will be collected for a couple of weeks, and then signups will begin!

New header banner over at [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon. And yes, I know, like last time, I didn't fit every cast member on it. Too bad; make your own. :D The new banner is even wider than the old one (which was wide enough that people complained about certain characters not being on it, when in fact they were just at the edges). So the complete banner is under the cut, since the chances are pretty good that your screen resolution will cut off some of it:

Wide image is wide )

Looking through all those screenshots and publicity pictures to make this was fun (so much shiny!) but also kept making me sad. I miss my pretty team.

There really need to be more vids with season four and five footage. What, did everyone stop vidding in early season four? There's just so much pretty from the later seasons. I keep wanting to make a show retrospective vid (I even have some songs) but, well, time. And inclination.

I posted a poll at [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon on the rules for this year - I'm tossing around a number of options (should it be a fic exchange? should it stay anonymous?). If you're interested in the ficathon, feel free to weigh in. :)

Edit: Also, a rec! If you (like me) enjoy following long stories in serial/WIP format, there's one I just got caught up with last night that I'm really enjoying: Long Ago (and Far Away) by [livejournal.com profile] kristen999 and [livejournal.com profile] everybetty. It's a gen WWII AU taking place in the South Pacific (the authors include a warning for period-related racism and sexism in the characters' attitudes, language, etc). Very well-researched, and updates on a regular schedule, so if you prefer not to read WIPs, you can read the whole thing in a couple of weeks once it's entirely posted.
