Others have squeed about SGA's The Prodigal, already. I appear to have gotten distracted with meta.

... specifically, this meta linked from the noticeboard (warning: spoilers for Prodigal and potential squee-harshing). I think that the post's author has a good point as regards writing in general (being true to the integrity of your characters) -- I just disagree strenuously over the specific example that s/he used from the episode, to the point where it makes me wonder if we're even watching the same show! Rather than responding with a comment, since I don't know how this person would feel about some random stranger jumping in with wildly divergent thoughts, I ended up soapboxing over here. (At quite a bit of length, too.)

Raaaaaambling, with spoilers for Prodigal and quotes from the squee-harshing post in question )

... and, totally unrelated to the above, I just realized that the "Athosians are matriarchal" theory got another strong bit of support back in Search & Rescue -- babies take their mother's last names! I'm not sure if I can really give the writers credit for doing this on purpose; it may simply have happened by serendipitous accident because they were thinking in "Teyla as single mother" mode and/or had completely forgotten about Kanaan. But when she said her son's full name, his last name was Emmagan ...!

Why must both my shows be horribly squick-inducing this week?

I already basically said my piece about this week's SGA at Tipper's journal, and I agree with what she said, so I won't bother complaining about it here.

And then I watched Supernatural to get the taste of that out of my mouth. OH ERIC KRIPKE NO )

I have houseguests right now, so ... just a few brief observations.

Spoilers )

Okay, back to houseguests now.

You know, last year, when episodes leaked ahead of time, I tried to be the best I could possibly be (aside from not watching them, which would clearly have been beyond my willpower). I didn't post about them, didn't pass around links -- clamped down on all my fannish impulses, squeed quietly by myself and waited for the rest of the world to see them.

This year ... feh. I try to be a good fan, I really do; I buy the episodes on iTunes *and* on DVD; but I've been waiting months and it's not MY fault if they keep tempting me beyond endurance and ... I want to post about it, darn it!

Needless to say, YOU WILL BE MASSIVELY SPOILED for SGA 5x01, Search & Rescue )

Um. Not so happy here. About one specific thing in the episode, at least.

I can't even read episode reactions without being spoiled for next season! I already knew to avoid the comments ... XD Well, I promise no spoilers here -- except for the episode, of course! I'm not even watching next week's preview, 'cause I don't wanna know.

Kindred in brief )

Old Soldiers Die Hard is this week's topic of discussion at [livejournal.com profile] sga_talk. So, if there's something that's always bugged you about the story or something that just *has* to be said, now is the time! As authors have been doing in past discussions, I think I'll probably stay out of it for the most part and come in at the end to answer questions. I've always really liked seeing my work discussed, whether or not it's positive -- actually, a flawed work makes the most interesting meta!

Which leads right into the next part of this post. Something else that I've been pondering about "Midway" that's a lot less squee-inducing than the previous post )

On an entirely different topic, I have an RSS question. Does anyone know if it's possible to use LJ to subscribe to the RSS feed for a blog if it doesn't specifically have an LJ feed set up for it? There are several non-LJ blogs that I read (on wordpress and elsewhere) that I would like to add to my LJ feeds if possible. If it's NOT possible (as far as you know) can anyone tell me how to set up an LJ feed for a non-LJ blog, so that I might suggest it? (I feel like a total dork suggesting "Hey, you could set up an LJ feed!" when I wouldn't be able to answer the first question about how to do it.)
