sholio: Red ball with snow (Christmas ornament)
The reveals are out and here's what I wrote!

Photo Finish (Mrs. Pollifax, 5500 wds, Grace & Farrell, gen)
The recipient had an amazing prompt, which was for Miss Hartshorne (Emily's neighbor who has no idea that Emily is a spy) running into Farrell while she's on a travel tour and he's on a case. I couldn't resist this - so Grace gets her own little CIA spy adventure, for a treat.

Demon Touched (Chalion, 3600 wds, Adelis & Penric & Desdemona, gen)
Another irresistible prompt, in this case for Adelis acquiring a demon. This also led me to finally read the early Penric books, which I really enjoyed. I needed to brush up on Chalionverse theology and make sure I wasn't writing something that completely broke canon.

Merry Midwinter (Daniel Blackland, 4800 wds, Gabriel/Max)
I had decided ahead of time that even if I didn't match on it, I was going to treat the one Daniel Blackland requester in Yuletide, because there needs to be more fic for it in the world. The recipient prompted for between-books fic with Max and Gabriel getting to know each other better, so that's what I wrote, a getting-together fic with some AU holidays mixed in.

Second Case (MacGyver, 1100 wds, Mac & Pete, gen)
This was my assignment - I had no details to go on, so I stalked the recip a bit to see which characters they preferred, and decided to go with an additional scene to the flashback in "Partners" (the "how they met" flashback ep).

The obligatory Biggles

And of course I treated some Biggles!

Last Resort (5800 wds, Biggles & Ginger & EvS, gen + some background Biggles/EvS-ishness)
AU of Foreign Legionnaire in which EvS does actually try his doomed last stand idea, gets shot, but survives. Nice try, Erich, but you're just going to have to deal with the mortifying ordeal of not dying and having Biggles being nice to you.

And all my fortunes at thy foot I'll lay (2700 wds, Biggles/von Stalhein)
This is an idea I had been vaguely kicking around for a while, a post-Looks Back fic in which they both have to deal with the emotional fallout from Biggles getting shot and EvS's attendant feelings about that. Bonus: weak, recuperating Biggles.
sholio: Red ball with snow (Christmas ornament)
Yuletide was unleashed today and I have received three glorious gifts!

The first two are for Dick Francis's book Smokescreen, which I read (and loved) just in time to slip under the wire as a request, and I got TWO fics for it, both of which are beautifully in character and also very tender, and fill in much-needed aftermath (and h/c) following the book's satisfying but abrupt ending. They are very reliant on having read the book and also spoil its ending, so it's probably not something that you'd want to read without canon knowledge. But the book is pretty short and still in print and recommended! And these are the first-ever fics for it, as far as I know.

The Fabric Shears, The Plastic Chair (2200 wds, gen)
Evan and Conrad take care of Link immediately after the events of Smokescreen.

climax and denouement (3300 wds, Link/Evan, M)
At the end of Man in a Car, Evan had praised Link's performance only begrudgingly. Link probably thought that was because they’d disagreed so much on Link’s acting choices. In actuality, it was because he’d known one more successful project would not convince Link to work with him on another. They’d made something brilliant together, and now Link was going to ride off into the sunset and never collaborate with him again. He wondered if that was still the case now.

And I also got a fun, WWI-era Biggles AU with the absolutely brilliant idea of Biggles as a sort of airplane whisperer who has a psychic bond with his aircraft. Why has this never been done before, I ask.

Camel's-Eye View (1200 wds, sort of Biggles/EvS-ish)
The Sopwith Camel has Opinions about Biggles' obsession.
sholio: brightly colored Christmas cookies (Christmas cookies red-green)
Thank you for writing for me! I'm sure I'll love whatever you make, and I would be equally delighted to receive anything for any of my requested fandoms. This letter is for idea purposes only, to give you some inspiration, but if you come up with something different, go for it! I am also happy to receive fic that includes whatever winter holidays would be appropriate for the characters' culture and religion, though of course you don't have to.

I have treats turned on and I love to receive them!

Yuletide!

Jan. 1st, 2021 12:25 am
sholio: glittery Christmas ornaments (Christmas ornament 2)
Yuletide author reveals! My writers were THE SNEAKIEST this year! I did not guess ANYONE (well, except [personal profile] opalmatrix, who clearly knew I would, and I still love it by the way). Anyway, you guys are the sneakiest and best. I loved, loved, loved my gifts. I cannot believe [personal profile] alchemise wrote me TWO things (I didn't even guess one!) and [personal profile] rachelmanija completely fooled me by writing Iron Fist when she was not even on my suspect list.

Meanwhile, I was THE MOST obvious this year.

First, my assignment:

Friday Night Social (Defenders, Jessica + team, 1800 wds)
Jessica wants it known that no part of this was her idea.

I got a lovely request for Jessica + Luke + Danny (and a bit of Matt slipped in as well!). I offered everyone in the Defenders set as usual, but this might be the first year that I've wound up with a request for that particular combo. Early friendships/teamships as they try to figure out how to work together and deal with this whole "friends" thing.

And the treats!

Shore Leave (Alliance-Union, Meg & Sal, 1200 wds)
The last time Meg was on Mariner Station, it had been a different place.

I started writing this as a fill for a lingering pinch hit (I'll often write part of a pinch hit before claiming it, just to make sure the words are coming), but someone else nabbed it first, so I went ahead and finished it as a treat.

Holiday Style (Iron Fist, Ward & Colleen, 4300 wds)
"Okay, so for the record," Ward said, as shoppers jostled them, "you're having me help you pick out a gift for your boyfriend. Me."
If looks could kill, Colleen's glare should have pinned him, quivering, to the sidewalk.

Ward and Colleen go Christmas shopping. It goes about as well as their plans ever do.

Muscle Memory (Iron Fist, Danny & Ward, 2500 wds)
Danny learns to use Orson Randall's guns. Ward gets to play teacher for once.

There was a request for road trip fic, so how could I not write that?

Thank you so much to all my lovely commenters and the people who recced things! I will try to respond properly over the next few days. And also look to see who wrote what and try to get some reading done!
sholio: brightly colored Christmas cookies (Christmas cookies red-green)
I hope the day is treating you well! I am thrilled and delighted with my absolutely lovely gifts! They are all wonderful and exactly what I wanted. ♥

Fluffy (Iron Fist, Ward & Danny & Colleen, 4800 wds)
Ward gets turned into a kitten. This is EVERYTHING the premise promises, completely adorable with delightful banter and perfectly cat-accurate behavior (hiding under things! managing to hide in a room with nowhere to hide! will only let you pet them when you're not looking at them!) that is also somehow Ward-accurate behavior.

Two Men, a Baby, and a Magic Sword (Iron Fist, Danny & Ward & Ward's baby, 2000 wds)
Babysitting shenanigans, Ward trying hard to be a good dad, and a terminally cute dose of these two being cute with a baby. ♥

One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer (Defenders team, Jessica POV)
Teamy and gently angsty aftermath to a mission that didn't quite go as planned, with a great Jessica voice and a perfect touch of h/c.

I have also gotten lovely comments from all but one of the people I wrote for, and I am sipping a cup of gift tea right now. (Most of my family knows to give me tea. It's great.) I hope that you are having a nice day, whatever this day is for you.
sholio: (Cute cactus)
Thank you so much! I love every one of these canons, and I'm sure I'll love whatever you make for me.

I've requested some of these before, so feel free to look through my exchange letters tag for additional inspiration. I went kind of minimal on prompts this year, but if you want more guidance I have more extensive prompts in some of my previous letters, and would still love to receive any of them.

I finally finished my Yuletide letter (canons eventually requested after a lot of dithering: Matthew Scudder mysteries, Iron Fist, Defenders, Wiseguy). I was amused to notice that a) they're all set largely in New York, and b) in every case, at least one of my requested characters is a Totally Done With Your Shit cynic who would absolutely hate dealing with magical bullshit. Therefore I would be delighted if anyone wants to inflict magical bullshit on them. I mean, obviously I am also fine with a perfectly normal, down-to-earth story. But consider though: Frank McPike having to deal with the fact that magic exists and Vinnie is in the middle of it.

Still about a day to sign up if you want to! JOIN US.

I am sad that the Defendersverse shows are so far down from last year's signups. I'm the only person requesting Iron Fist (so far), nobody's asked for Luke Cage at all, and there are only 3 people requesting Defenders when last year had over a dozen. I know people move on after a show ends, but did everyone have to move on so fast. ;___;

Anyway though, Trick or Treat Exchange opened on Halloween and is full of lovely things! I got two wonderful gifts:

The Haunting of the Rosebud Motel (Schitt's Creek, Stevie & David, 1300 wds)
Stevie and David perform an exorcism. And it goes about like you'd expect. HAHAHA. This is hilarious and adorable, and nailed canon perfectly.

and now the weather (Stranger Things, Steve/Nancy/Jonathan, 1300 wds)
Steve turned back into a person in the back seat of the Byers’ station wagon. Werewolf!Steve, with gentle h/c and lovely character dynamics. Really delightful.

Thank you so much! I love every one of these canons, and I'm sure I'll love whatever you make for me. Also, prompts are guidelines only, so if you have a different idea, go for it. If you see an idea in one request that you want to write for another one, please do!

Oh, before I get into Yuletide stuff ... Festivids is open for signups! (Small fandom vidding exchange, closes the 27th.) I already have my signup in, but haven't written a letter yet.

Meanwhile ... the Yuletide tagset is up! (May load slowly due to its size.) Signups will open on the 27th.

I nominated the Matthew Scudder books, Iron Fist, and Wiseguy. Checking out various other things of interest:
- Ben January: looks like the full character set here
- Alliance-Union: I figured this year, rather than nominating them, I'd throw my Hellburners on the Yuletide gods, and it looks like half of them got in (Ben and Dekker, but not Meg and Sal). Ah well, I can work with that.
- Dragaera: with an excellent character selection
- Finisterre/Nighthorses: with a surprising number of characters for such a mini-fandom.
- The Foundling is in this year! Excellent. (I don't ship the juggernaut pairing - inasmuch as a fandom with almost zero fic has a juggernaut - so the odds of actually getting any relevant-to-my-interests fic are low, but it's nice to see it in the tagset.)
- Imperial Radch: yessss
- Lymond Chronicles: not really something I'm into enough to either request or offer, but of the 3 characters nominated, one is Richard, and my secret Richard Crawford soft spot approves and hopes for fic.
- Mrs. Pollifax: pretty good character set here
- Rai-Kirah: wow, I haven't thought about that in ages. Slightly saddened by lack of Lydia in the tags.
- Elfquest: very eclectic character selection, which I guess isn't surprising for a series with approximately 4 billion characters, but I'm a little surprised by the lack of what I would consider the Usual Suspects for nominations.
- Robotech Macross! With a very interesting character selection. Someone is clearly into Zentraedi.
- Carnivale! ... but without my fave. Awww.
- Defenders is in, with an excellent character selection; yay!
- Luke Cage and Jessica Jones are in, though LC only has Shades and Comanche, and JJ has no Malcolm (boo).
- Forever Knight: with a ton of characters. I might have to offer this year.
- The Good Place: yay!
- Siren: I noped out on this at the end of season one, but it looks like the OT3 is in, so I will hope for fic.
- Whiskey Cavalier: of the characters who are in, I hope for Edgar/Jai.

I'm happy for the Guardian people - I see it qualified! Enjoy yourselves! :D I also see Chicago Typewriter among the kdramas; I need to finish watching that.

ETA: I completely forgot to check the movies! I'm surprised but pleased to see that both Captain Marvel and Into the Spiderverse are eligible. Other items of interest to me: Iron Giant, L.A. Confidential, The Princess Bride.

And I'm sure there are a bunch more I'm either forgetting to look up or will notice after signups close.

What are you excited for?

You get three nominations and up to four characters for each. Thus far, I've nominated:
• Iron Fist (Danny, Ward, Colleen, Joy)
• Matthew Scudder series (Matt, Elaine, TJ, Mick)

I don't know what to use my last nomination for. I really want the Heavy Time/Hellburner characters in, but I'm also holding off for a bit in case something more obscure comes along and grabs me by the neck. Also, there are several other eligible things I want in too, Dark Matter and the other Defenders shows among them. Aside from the above bulleted ones, I haven't finalized what this year's requests will consist of yet; I kinda want to have another super-obscure canon in among the ones I've requested or offered in other exchanges in the last couple of years.

What about you? For those of you doing Yuletide this year - have you done nominations yet? What do you plan to request/offer?
sholio: Cocoa in red cup with cinnamon stick (Christmas cocoa)
The Yuletide Madness treat collection has now released, and I got another gift!!

In Sickness and in Health (Alliance-Union, Hellburner crew, 1400 words)
Like I just wrote in a comment, wow does this author ever have my number when it comes to these characters. XD Sweet and lovely h/c (in a very canon-plausible scenario!) with a character who has come so, so far from the lone wolf he was at the start of the series. ♥

My Yuletide is amazing this year. I'm so happy!

This year I went sliiiightly overboard and ended up writing ... *counts on fingers* 8 treats plus my assignment. Some might be relatively easy to guess; at least one I am confident that absolutely nobody is going to guess. Enjoy the treasure hunt. :D
sholio: heart in a cup of tea (Heart)
Yuletide signups are open 'til Oct. 20!

Note: I know several people on my flist are currently watching Iron Fist, so just a warning that my prompts under the cut include spoilers for the end of season 2.

Thank you so much for writing something for me! I am very easy to please and I love all these fandoms equally, so anything for any of them will delight me.

General likes: hurt/comfort of all types (tropey as hell? bring it on! head injuries, drowning, lost/stranded, hypothermia, desperately worried about a critically injured friend, etc ...), friendship, banter, casefic, character studies, short fluffy fics, long plotty fics, presumed dead, characters saving each other's lives, holidays (I celebrate Christmas, so Christmas-related fic is fine with me if appropriate for the canon), estranged friends reconnecting, characters hanging out/drinking together/playing board games/etc.

Do Not Want: permanent character death, jealousy or infidelity/cheating (except as present in canon; it's not that you need to avoid all mentions of it, just that I'd rather not have it introduced in a non-canon context), downer endings.

Yuletide reveals are out! Despite not being signed up for it, I decided to try to write a treat for everyone who requested Stranger Things and a sholio-compatible combination of characters, since this is certainly the last year it’ll be eligible. (Yuletide is a small-fandoms-only exchange, and the fandom has exploded since S2 came out.) I didn’t manage to do that, but I did write a bucketload of Steve/Nancy/Jonathan (and one that’s just Steve & the kids fluffy gen), and I’m really happy with how all of these turned out!

caroling, caroling through the snow (2300 words, gen, Steve + the kids)
The Hawkins Middle School AV club gets a holiday fundraising idea, and Steve is just along for the ride. (Literally.)

Let’s Stop the World (5300 words, pre-Steve/Nancy/Jonathan with some Steve/Nancy, but really mostly friendship)
It was supposed to just be a study session. Steve’s failing algebra. Jonathan’s acing it. And Jonathan could use a little extra money from after-school tutoring. But somehow it turned into more. (Or: AU in which Steve and Jonathan become friends before the start of season 1, and everything is different.)

Elf on the Shelf (1000 words, Steve/Nancy/Jonathan)
Nancy has a holiday job at the mall. Now if she can just stop everyone she knows from finding out. Especially two of them in particular.

Home for the Holidays (3400 words, Steve/Nancy/Jonathan, futurefic)
When a blizzard prevents the three from going home for Christmas, they have to make their own Christmas in their new apartment, terrible tree and nonfunctional oven and everything.

Ghostbusters R Us (3100 words, Steve/Nancy/Jonathan)
Steve’s college dorm has a ghost. They fought a Demogorgon together, right? Ghosts shouldn’t be too much trouble.

And then there was one I wrote that actually ISN’T Stranger Things! Street Justice is an early-90s buddy cop show, and I picked up the request of a magic/urban-fantasy AU as a treat for one of the pinch hitters. I haven’t actually seen the show since it aired on TV the first time, so I watched some clips on Youtube to refresh my memory on the character voices and relationships, and now I kinda want to watch the show again.

Caged Lightning (Street Justice, 1800 words, gen)
Adam’s never seen anyone use magic like Grady does. He’s never seen anyone fight like Grady does either. Magic AU.

sholio: tree-shaped cookie (Christmas cookies)
The Yuletide reveals are out! I wrote:

And Still of a Winter's Night (Benjamin January Mysteries, 10K, gen; When a young woman turns up dead during Carnival, Shaw needs Ben's help with the investigation -- or, rather, Dominique's.)

I read six or so of the books back at the beginning of December in preparation for writing the story (this series has a very distinctive narrative voice) and I really wanted to talk about them, but I didn't want to tip my hand! Working on this story was a lot of fun. ([livejournal.com profile] sheron is probably laughing now because she got to be the recipient of all my wailing and gnashing of teeth about it, but it actually WAS fun, and I made her read the first book in case I needed to discuss plot woes with her, which as it turned out I didn't; it all went together nicely. Also, belated thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wordsofastory for doing a canon beta on it for me!)

I had already picked out this person's letter for possible treating, so I was halfway to planning to write a story based off my favorite of their prompts anyway, and opening up my email to find THIS as my assignment was probably the first time that I've gone "EEEEHEEEE" rather than "nooooo, why did I offer that canon /o\".

The other two things I wrote were treats for a book series it so happens I had JUST finished rereading when Yuletide prompts were revealed, and I discovered that more than one person wanted fic in this fandom with exactly the characters I like best, so I decided to try writing some. The stories are both fairly similar: gen 1960s-era cozy spy fic.

The Spy Who Came to Christmas (Mrs. Pollifax series, Emily + Farrell + supporting characters, 8200 wds; Mrs. Pollifax anticipates a quiet holiday with her daughter Jane's family, but instead there's spy trouble afoot.)

Playing the Odds (Mrs. Pollifax series, Emily + Farrell, 3100 wds; Tag scene after the main action in The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax. She promised to visit him in the hospital, and Emily Pollifax always keeps her promises.)

The books, by the way, are adorable. The quality is uneven, as you might expect for a long-running series that was written over about 40 years, but the first one in particular is really good (if you are willing to swallow the basic premise of an elderly widow who semi-accidentally becomes a CIA operative due to an identity mix-up); it's one of my go-to books for feel-good friendship h/c. Also, having just spent most of the summer writing Agent Carter fic, this was not much of a departure. Actually, while I never got a Peggy-and-Jack vibe from these particular characters in the books, I noticed when I was writing them that it really felt like writing Peggy and Jack. Except with very different backstories for the characters, of course, and a 20-year age difference.
sholio: tree-shaped cookie (Christmas cookies)
Sneaking in with some Yuletide fic recs before reveals ...

I already recced the story written for me - Troublesome to Others, But A Torment To Themselves (Vorkosigan series, Mark/Kareen + Miles) - but really, it's great and I just had to say again how delighted I was with it. :D

I have definitely read more than this, but these are the ones I bookmarked and therefore the only ones I can remember to rec. See, this is why I should have done this a week ago.

Recs - Dark Tower, Rivers of London, Dalemark Quartet, Red Dwarf, Cadfael Chronicles, Quantum Leap )
sholio: glittery Christmas ornaments (Christmas ornament 2)
The 2016 Yuletide archive is open for reading! This is the first year in awhile that I've signed up (though I eased back into it by writing some treats last year) and OMG MY GIFT IS AMAZING. <33333

Troublesome to Others, But A Torment To Themselves (9800 wds; Mark/Kareen + Miles; Miles Vorkosigan is the world's biggest cockblock.)

I COULDN'T STOP LAUGHING. It's farcical and adorable and very reminiscent of Bujold's madcap comedy scenes in her books, but with a dark undertone because, well, Mark. Poor Mark. But it's lovely and if you enjoy these characters, you should read it!

I haven't read anything else yet, because I got a 10K fic! However, I wrote 3 fics this year, my assignment and two treats, so have fun figuring those out. :D
sholio: tree-shaped cookie (Christmas cookies)
Thank you so much for writing for me! I am generally very easy to please, and I am equally excited about all of these fandoms, so I'm sure I will love whatever you make for me!

General likes: hurt/comfort, plotty fic, fluffy fic, angst with a happy ending, action, quiet moments of domesticity, gen, banter, competence, cuddling, presumed dead but really alive, characters saving each other.

General dislikes: Crossovers, character death, unhappy endings.

Individual requests under the cut. Fandoms: The Cinder Spires (Jim Butcher), Never Trust a Dead Man (Vivian Vande Velde), Vorkosigan Saga (Lois McMaster Bujold), Benjamin January Mysteries (Barbara Hambly).

Requests )

In conclusion, please don't worry about sticking too close to any of my requests if you have a different idea. I'm requesting these fandoms and these characters because I love them, and my reading tastes are fairly broad as long as it's not just "rocks fall, everyone dies", so if you write a story that speaks to you, I'll probably love it too!
sholio: (Avatar-upbeat attitude)
The Aeronaut's Windlass is the first book in this series and the only one out so far. It's self-contained, or reasonably so -- that is, it doesn't end on a cliffhanger -- but is also obviously setting up the dominos for a longer series.

This is by the same author as Dresden Files. I know some people were turned off by sexism in the early books of that series, but it might still be worth giving this one a try; it has several excellent female protagonists, and no sexism in sight (nothing discernible to me, anyway) aside from the societal kind, due to their society being kinda-sorta Napoleonic-Wars-era in nature.

The cultural worldbuilding is somewhat flat, which is one of my two issues with the book (the other concerned a character I couldn't stand, but that's just a matter of personal taste). It's pseudo-19th-century-fantasy-Europe with airships. It does get somewhat more interesting once we start to get into the political landscape -- people on this world live in tower cities above an inhospitable wilderness, and while the protagonists' tower is pseudo-England, the others aren't. Also, while the series is fairly standard steampunk with airships, ether-based energy weapons, etc., there is a cool twist to the tech, which is kind of a spoiler (more of a premise spoiler than a plot spoiler, and might be an enticement to some), so I'm going to put it under a cut: Mild spoiler )

Anyway, there are two main sets of protagonists: a group of 20-something aspiring soldiers/sky Marines, and an older generation of 40-somethings sharing a tangled and mysterious past, which includes most of my favorite characters, such as a kickass female sky pirate and a swashbuckling swordfighter guy who is in a happy long-term relationship with a woman who is for all intents and purposes his common-law wife. There's a huge ensemble cast with a character for every taste (a young woman struggling to prove herself as a soldier, a fighter-type who belongs to a race of people who are part cat, a ~moody and brooding~ airship captain, likable antagonists, and so forth). This is probably not a good series for people whose tastes run towards deep and complex worldbuilding, but it has tons of swash and buckle, action and adventure and h/c. It's also 600 pages long, so even though there's just one book in the series so far, there is a lot to sink into, and I'm really looking forward to finding out how the various plot and character threads develop in future books.
sholio: Autumn leaves (Autumn-leaves 1)
... okay, seriously, I gotta get on this Yuletide thing, if I'm going to do it this year. Signups close tonight!

One of the things I wanted to do before I get my letter up was post recs for the more obscure books I'm requesting, since it looks like most (all?) of my requests this year are for book fandoms, and hey, if I liked them, maybe you will like them too! And maybe I'll have more people to talk to them about!

Let's start with Never Trust a Dead Man by Vivian Vande Velde. It's recently back in print ... with an absolutely terrible cover. The cover on the older edition was a bit young for the book itself, but at least it was cute and generally fairly accurate to what happens in the book, even if they aged the protagonist down by about 5 years. (The writing style is middle-grade-ish, but the characters are in their late teens.) The new one looks like it should be the cover for a self-published YA vampire romance. Not that there's anything wrong with YA vampire romance, but that's really not what this book is.

This book has been one of my comfort reads for at least a decade or more. It's fast, funny, sweet, has a surprisingly well-crafted mystery given the simplicity of the style, and it never fails to make me happy, despite the book's somewhat dark premise. It's about a young man in a rural, medieval-ish village who is accused of murder, and because they don't know what to do with him -- murder isn't something they have to deal with very often -- the villagers wall him up in an ossuary cave with the dead man's corpse. Luckily for him, he's not the only person in the cave; there's also a witch (sarcastic, hyper-competent, and AWESOME; she's great) who sneaks in every so often to steal bits of corpses for spells.

She agrees to help him, and so the accused murderer and the dead man's ghost team up to solve the murder. Complication #1: they can't stand each other (which is why he was accused of killing the other guy in the first place -- they had a longstanding and very public feud). Complication #2: due to a necromantic spell gone wrong, the (sarcastic, annoyed) ghost came back trapped in the body of a bat. Meanwhile the witch just wants to know what she did to deserve being saddled with these two idiots. Things pretty much go (hilariously) downhill for everyone from there.

I love this book; it's been one of my perennial Yuletide recs for ages. Parts of it still make me laugh, no matter how many times I've read it, and it's a lovely riff on the general theme of misjudging people based on first impressions -- everyone from the dead guy to the witch to the main character's love interest turns out to be more than they appear at first. It's also a short book and a fast read, so it's not that much of a time investment, unlike the fantasy doorstopper I'm about to rec in the next post.
sholio: Red ball with snow (Christmas ornament)
I didn't participate officially, but I wrote three treats, and here they are.

Imperial Radch

Dark Watch - Something broke in her a thousand years ago, or maybe it broke when she came out of stasis. Maybe it was always broken and she just didn't know. [2270 wds, Seivarden & Mercy of Kalr]

Fragments - It was, Seivarden told herself later, the kind of stupid accident that could have happened to anyone. Not a terminal fuckup. Just wrong-place-at-wrong-time, that was all. The omens had been unlucky that day. She should've been more careful. [1800 wds; Seivarden, Breq, Mercy of Kalr, Medic]

I suppose neither of these are a big surprise given that I'd just read the books and there were quite a few people requesting it for Yuletide. The latter in particular is a very "me" kind of fic -- hurt/comfort floof, basically.

Nimona

a song for the new world order - Nimona comes home. [1700 wds, gen, post-canon]

This was a last-minute treat for one of the pinch hitters. I was looking through the pinch hitter request letters for something I was even vaguely familiar with, and decided to give this one a try.
