EDIT: I wanted to add this edit at the top to make sure people read it -- I really am
loving the explosion of gleeful, squeeful joy that's been happening in my comments lately, and the absolute last thing I want to do is dump a bucket of cold water on it! *hugs everyone* I just ... need to figure out a way that we can still have that without having some of my fun squashed too. Hence this post!
So. Spoilers.
naye made a
wonderful post on spoilers some months back, which I am just going to point you to, because her take on spoilers is very similar to mine!
Basically -- I know you guys are having a lot of fun talking with each other in the comments to my posts, okay? I've always enjoyed seeing people having their own conversations in my comments and I really, really don't want to spoil your fun! But I don't want to have my fun spoiled either. I know that you all have seen the whole series, and want to talk about it! I really can't wait 'til I've seen the whole series and can talk about it too. But I'm not there yet.
And one thing that
naye points out in
her post is that, because she and I are such dyed-in-the-wool spoilerphobes, maybe we're a little out of step with the rest of fandom as to what constitutes spoilers for us? It's not just "Jim Bob dies in episode 3!" Everyone has been very,
very good about avoiding spoilers of that nature, and I really do thank you for it! :) But it's also subtler stuff, mood-spoiler stuff.
Perhaps most of fandom doesn't even think of these things as spoilers. But these are the kind of comments I've been getting that I would really appreciate it if you guys would
try your hardest to avoid:
- "You'll have a completely different take on this scene/that character when you've seen the rest of the season!"
- "There's so much about this character/arc that you don't know yet!"
- "If you loved that part, you're going to absolutely love season [x] or episode [x] or character [x]!"
- "Have you seen [event x] yet?"
- "Don't worry, [dead/missing/gone-forever guest star x] comes back!"
- "Here's a link! Don't look at it until you've seen the whole series!"
- "The next episode with [character x] is [episode x]!"
- "Hey, you guys remember [cryptic fannish term for something I haven't seen yet]?"
I know you all mean well, I really do, and I really don't care if you talk about any of this stuff anywhere else on the whole Internet! Just, please, not in my comments. I
know, believe me, that some characters, tropes and arcs are extremely difficult to talk about without hinting at stuff that I haven't seen yet. If you can't, then
please don't talk about them until I've seen more of that character, arc or trope.
I also don't want to scare off any new people -- and I
love that so many new people have shown up to talk about the series with me. I don't want to come across as That Scary Spoilerphobe Lady when you don't know me yet! XD I'm so sorry to be a hardass about this! But rest assured, at the rate I'm going, it's only going to be a couple of weeks 'til I finish the series, or at least get past most of the big spoilers that I don't want to know about. And then you can talk about whatever you want, and I'll be very happy to talk about it with you. :D
Just for the record, behind-the-scenes stuff for episodes I've already seen does NOT constitute spoilers as far as I'm concerned. I've been loving all those little anecdotes from the DVD extras, and your stories about how you got into Highlander, and your squee about the characters, and happy fannish chatter about the episodes I've already seen. I really do enjoy it VERY MUCH! Just, please, PLEASE try not to let things slip about future events and character developments, even general stuff. I enjoy them so much more if they're completely unexpected, or at the very least unconfirmed, in the case of things I'm anticipating already.
