sholio: a red cup by a stack of books (Books & coffee 2)
Keeley #6 is out on Friday - Amazon preorder here - and here are the usual free copies; get 'em while they're hot. (Link will stop working when it's live on Amazon in a week.) Click on the cover or the link at the bottom to download; let me know if anything seems to be borked. Also let me know privately if you need any of the earlier books for context, btw.

Blurb is still a work in progress ...

a book cover showing a blonde woman, a moon, and a small dragon in the background

From enemies to ... something else.

A few months ago, Aliette and her flock of bird shifters forged a truce with James Keeley and his magical detective agency. Now the shifters of Grand Bluffs need his help.

There's a new alpha in town, using a previously unknown form of alpha power so strong it's taking down the local shifters like dominos. But what does he really want? James, as a human, is immune to this alpha cult leader's shifter wiles, and James's magical spellgun can thwart the shifters' ability to sniff him out as a human.

Going undercover in a shifter cult, James can't take along his usual dragon backup. (And the dragon in question is deeply unhappy about it.) He's going to have to rely on Aliette—who not so long ago wanted to kill him—in a beautiful lakeside resort full of old enemies and new ones, where his survival relies on managing to convince a lot of shifter cultists that he's one of them.

Because failure means getting to star in his own personal production of The Most Dangerous Game.

And the only ally he has in the cult, Aliette, is one alpha-power brainwashing away from trying to kill him herself.

Not to mention that the spellgun, the one thing keeping every shifter in the cult from turning on him, seems to have developed an agenda of its own ...

sholio: a book and some gourds (Autumn-book & pumpkin)
Several of these are reprints, but here's what I had out in 2021:

A 4 by 3 block of book covers

I don't actually think this is sane, sensible, or recommended, but once I realized I was putting out roughly a book a month this year, I decided to see how long I could keep it going, just as a personal challenge to myself. As it turned out, I had something out every month this year except for March. (And I literally just noticed I used the exact same type treatment on the Horses and Wolf Country covers. Oops.)

I'm cheating a bit with the last one, because it's just a free Lauren story that's been on my Lauren Esker website forever and I finally got around to putting up on Amazon, but I made a new cover for it, so I'm counting it. Free version downloadable here.

Things to do for the rest of the year:

- Edits for Tor (my next Zoe) & ARCs.
- Much-needed website cleanup/update.
- Mailing list maintenance and redoing the onboarding sequence. (Or at least make a plan for it.)
- Color some Kismet pages with the hopes of restarting it in January.
- My annual New Year's Eve story.

Any of this that doesn't get done this month (well, except the last one) can be pushed into January; I'm planning on taking it easy between now and the end of the year.

Next year's primary goal is consistency. I can write fast, but what I'm not very good at is planning to work on specific projects and then sticking with those rather than bouncing to new things. I'm not entirely abandoning my usual "mayfly on crack" working process because it's just part of how my brain works, but in general I want to get better at reliably delivering books in a series by a particular deadline.
sholio: book with pink flower (Book & flower)
Two books out this week! Both are Amazon-exclusive. Let me know if you'd like them in a non-Amazon format.

Dick & Demon (Keeley & Associates #4) - the latest in the urban fantasy series I'm writing under my real name, and the first novel-length book in the series.

Wild Island Horses - writing as Liz Harman, a contemporary romance set on North Carolina's barrier islands.
sholio: Red ball with snow (Christmas ornament)
This week's free story features Dolly, the office ghost from Keeley & Associates.

What does a ghost do when she wants to give presents to her friends? Dolly gets into the Christmas spirit by being a literal Christmas spirit ... so to speak.

I'm taking a break from the free mailing list stories for the first few months of 2021, so enjoy 'em while they last.

In case you missed it, you can get most of the 2020 stories (through October) in a collection that you can download here:
https://dl.bookfunnel.com/j9k034u6ri

And the Kay vs. Santa (Gatekeeper-verse) story from a couple of weeks ago is here:
https://dl.bookfunnel.com/hkn405vhdx

Just in case a cathartic tale of Santa being hacked apart with a magic sword is more to your holiday tastes than something more heartwarming, lol. (It is heartwarming, I swear! Just ... differently so.)
sholio: shadowy man in trench coat (Noir detective)
Right, so book 3 in Keeley & Associates, that just-for-fun urban fantasy series I'm writing, is out next week, so it's time to throw some free copies at you! The link will stop working when the book is released.

Only a fool makes a deal with the fae.
But sometimes you don't have a choice.

Bookfunnel link!
(Or click on the cover. Which is tiny because I've been struggling with it for daayyyys and still don't like it.)

It's also for preorder on Amazon. Actually, here are the Amazon links to the whole series:
1. Dragon & Detective
2. Ghost & Gumshoe
3. Fae & Flatfoot (preorder, out next week)
4. Dick & Demon (preorder)*

*And technically not finished yet. It'll be out in June 2021.

ALSO FOR SALE NOW, also something I forgot to mention:
3-book Gatekeeper collection (the entire trilogy for $5.99). It was released Tuesday.

If you want any of these and don't feel comfortable dealing with Amazon, email me!

MORE FREE BOOK STUFF (links go to Bookfunnel; these won't expire):
Gatekeeper holiday story which is basically Kay vs. Evil Santa (will be on my website at some point, but not yet; download only for now)
Perfect Apples & Other Stories, a collection of short fiction from the mailing list (technically came out back in October, never actually linked to it because of reasons)

Sorry for dumping a bajillion links in one post like this! I have been more or less constantly busy for the last couple of months; then this week, suddenly I hit the point where I ... wasn't, and it has been amazing. But this also means that I'm poking my head up and reminding myself that I haven't actually linked to most of this stuff!

I'll have a year-end roundup post in a week or two of everything I've published this year that will also have links to a variety of perma-free stuff from the last year.
sholio: Woman sitting on a 1930s detective's desk (Noir woman on desk)
Thank you for all the cover input earlier! This is the current version - I'm going to go ahead and upload the files to Amazon a little later tonight for the pre-order, but cover tweaking is still entirely possible if you want to weigh in with further input or suggestions.

Downloads will be up through Monday and the book goes live on Tuesday. This is a novella-length urban fantasy murder mystery, sequel to Dragon & Detective but stands alone.

I CANNOT BELIEVE I'VE FINISHED THIS SERIES!! I've been writing it since 2009. Finished for now, anyway - the possibility of future books exists, but for now it's a standalone trilogy. I got to create a "Series - Done" folder in my Fiction folder just for this. ♥

And here are the by-now-standard free copies. Click the cover or the link to go to BookFunnel. The download link will work from now 'til Monday. The book goes live on Amazon on Sept. 29.

This Halloween, the dead will rise.

And only one woman can stop them...

I've also got Echo City set to go free on Amazon starting on Monday.

If you want the previous books and don't do Amazon, let me know and we can work something out.
sholio: book with pink flower (Book & flower)
And FINALLY we have moved along to new books! I uploaded the final version of this today. It goes live on Amazon on Tuesday, so the BookFunnel download will stop working then. Get one now if you want it!

The third book in the series, Hollow Souls, will be out in late September.

Art student and reluctant paladin Kay Darrow thought that being life-bonded to a magic sword with its own agenda was the worst thing that could happen to her.

Turns out she was wrong. Because now there's a city after her.

Not the people in the city. The city itself.

Welcome to New York. But not the one you know.

This is the other New York, the one that lies below the real one. It's a place where stepping through a door can take you from the modern day to Greenwich Village in the 1960s, or the Harlem Renaissance, where a magical gangster queen rules with an iron fist.

And there's something alive and hungry in the shadows ...

sholio: (Avatar-upbeat attitude)
So today I'm working on Facebook branding for my author persona.

(Me to Orion: The chaotic branding I've been doing on Facebook isn't really working.
Him: Yeah, you should really look into neutral or lawful branding instead.)

I have a new page for running FB ads from and generally for making book announcements, called Magic, Mayhem, and Mystery. You can see what it looks like here:

https://www.facebook.com/Magic-Mayhem-and-Mystery-601173417239021/

I wanted the name to apply to the general array of genres that this pen name is going to write, which will probably be mainly urban fantasy and mystery/thriller with supernatural or SF elements.

I want to redo my (largely unused) author group to match this, more or less, and start using it more. Specifically I want to make it more about my books and less about me. In the beginning I pretty much tried to roll all of my projects into one group that was really more about me than about what I do - this is what I mean by chaotic branding. It's called, sensibly enough, Layla Lawlor's Books and Art. But now that I'm looking around at what other people are doing with theirs, they've got cute names (like Hunter's Haven for an author named Elizabeth Hunter) and are more specifically focused on the books, and I want to do that too.

So I'm going to rename the group and make it sort of match the page, and I'm not sure what to call it.

My other author group, for the Lauren Esker paranormal romances, is called Lauren's Fireside Book Chat and I'm pretty happy with that - and with the "brand" for that page in general, which is kind of cozy and homey. This one is going to be more, I guess, stylish and actiony? But I do like the idea of having "Layla's X" to match the "Lauren's X" theme with the other group.

So now I'm just ... thinking of names. Layla's Magical Mayhem, maybe? I keep wanting to call it "Layla's Magical Mystery Tour", which is completely ridiculous but also kind of appealing.

AUGH.

Any suggestions are gratefully welcomed.
sholio: sun on winter trees (Default)
I thought this might be of interest to the self-pub people here! One of my major goals this year is to take everything I've learned about promoting myself through the Zoe project, as well as the Lauren Esker project on the side, and apply it to relaunching my real-name books, and see if I can make some decent money off them without compromising the stories and themes I want to work with. I'm working against a steep uphill curve here because none of my books are particularly commercial and most of them are books I wrote years ago, had rejected by a bunch of agents, and eventually ended up sitting on. So I'm entirely unsure if I will actually make any money doing this at all. But I'm going to try.
