sholio: Danny in a hoodie (Defenders-Danny)
Fandom Stocking was so good to me this year! (My stocking is here.) I got a BUNCH of icons, so now I have a slew of Iron Fist ones (see post icon!) and I've already swapped out my [tumblr.com profile] sholiofic icon for one of the new Agent Carter ones that [personal profile] leesa_perrie made me.

And I got an embarrassment of riches for fic - seriously, I am SO LUCKY and you guys are SO great. ♥

FICS FOR ME!

Come Around by [personal profile] xparrot (Trollhunters, Barbara/Walt, 10K!!!)
Xparrot wrote me 10K of Trollhunters fic for my OTP and it is SO GOOOOOOD. (Canon) babies and slow relationship-building and cool alienness and Changeling angst!

One Shot Over the Line by [personal profile] chomiji (Hellburner, Ben/Dek + canon pairings, 1400 wds)
Not gonna lie, I ship it, and this is so sweet and prickly and funny, and so them; an absolute total delight.

First Aid by [personal profile] glorious_spoon (Stranger Things, Steve + Dustin, 1100 wds)
SO CUTE OMGGG. ♥ Steve is the best big brother.

you’re calling to me (i can’t hear what you’ve said) by [personal profile] maplemood (Punisher, Frank + Leo,
Lovely and heartbreaking in all the right ways, and perfectly in character.

We're heading for something by [archiveofourown.org profile] nanasekei (Stranger Things/Avengers, SteveH + Dustin + Tony + SteveR, 1700 wds)
Their lives continue to be The Actual Weirdest. ♥

Plus a sweet lil Punisher ficlet.

I'll be back in a minute with what I wrote/made!
sholio: Red ball with snow (Christmas ornament)
First of all, a bit belated here, but I put a couple of photos from the winter solstice (well, technically the 20th - the day before - but it's not that different) on Tumblr so you can see what midwinter is like here at 65 degrees of latitude. Which I'm too lazy to repost here. So, see link.

Anyway, the actual purpose of this post ... the [community profile] fandom_stocking stockings are all hung up, and the deadline to stuff them has been extended to Jan. 19th (YAY!!). If you have a stocking, feel free to post your stocking link and list of fandoms in the comments!
sholio: Cocoa in red cup with cinnamon stick (Christmas cocoa)
The stockening begins: My Fandom Stocking is up! My eventual list of requested fandoms this year: Agent Carter, Iron Fist, Defenders, Punisher, Stranger Things, Trollhunters, Alliance-Union, Black Panther. Should you wish to treat me, you can leave treats in comments to that post (and can also submit to this year's AO3 collection).

You can still sign up 'til Dec. 15!

Another thing that seems to be going strong right now: commentfic memes! This is a DW thing that never really made the jump to Tumblr because the format just doesn't really support it (not that Tumblr doesn't have promptfic aplenty, and it's great, but this particular thing with a bunch of people leaving prompts for anyone to answer doesn't really translate format-wise). Here are the ones I'm currently participating in:

Three Sentence Ficathon
Middle-Aged Ships Comment Ficathon

Things I've written for the Three-Sentence Ficathon so far (yes, I failed at 3 sentences on the 2nd one, but the rules say that's okay XD):
Arrowverse, Oliver/Barry, stranded without powers
Thor & Loki, bodyswap

Go and leave prompts for any of my fandoms! :DDD (Or any fandom I'm not into, obviously. But I'd love to have more options to write!)

If there are any fandoms you particularly want prompts for at either of these, let me know and I'll leave you some if I'm familiar enough with it to come up with anything.

Also, prompt claiming is open at [community profile] smallfandomfest (a no-pressure ficathon similar to the above except that the prompts are on a spreadsheet and must be explicitly claimed).
sholio: Steve and Dustin from Stranger Things (StrangerThings-SteveDustin)
The stockings are live! Mine is here, and I'm completely delighted with everything I got, including the delightful icon I'm using on this post, a fantastic AU in which Peggy takes the SSR Chief job instead of Daniel by [personal profile] sheron, a darling GotG Christmas story by [personal profile] opalmatrix, and a snippet of a Fallen London/Agent Carter crossover by [personal profile] frith_in_thorns (in which Peggy has a mushroom hat and Jack is a Devil, because of course he is). Also book recs, pictures, greetings, and lots of lovely stuff. ♥

As usual, I didn't manage to treat everyone I wanted to, but I did sign up as a needy-stocking-filler, so I ended up writing quite a bit anyway! This year I wrote:

[Agent Carter] Ladyhawke AU [also on Tumblr]
[Stargate Atlantis] Rodney and Teyla are buried in an avalanche
[White Collar] Neal's first Christmas post-prison and Kate
[Ant-Man] Cassie and her giant pet ant

[Stranger Things] The kids give Steve a walkie-talkie of his own for Christmas
[Stranger Things] Kali has her own special Christmas ritual
[Stranger Things] Joyce/Hopper at Thanksgiving
[Stranger Things] The kids teach Steve to play D&D

[Dark Matter] Clothes-sharing for the win. Hey, it's a small ship. (Two/Three plus other pairings)
[Dark Matter] Two has a wardrobe malfunction (Two/Three)

All are gen unless other pairings are noted. Since they're all pretty short this year, I'll probably end up reposting them on Tumblr (and some are on AO3). I'll add the Tumblr links when they're up.
sholio: Red ball with snow (Christmas ornament)
Fandom stockings are here!

My stocking is up!
Fandoms: Agent Carter, Stranger Things, Dark Matter, Guardians of the Galaxy, One Punch Man

AO3 collection | Intro post & rules | Sign up post ('til Dec. 15)

If you haven't done this before, basically you fill out the form at the signup post with your fandoms and favorite ships/characters and likes/dislikes. And you "fill" stockings by posting fic snippets or art or whatever else they requested, which are screened and will be revealed in early January. You do not need to sign up to "fill" stockings or vice versa. You can look at my Fandom Stocking tag to see what I've done in the past. I first did this in ... 2009, I think? Something like that? Long before I was consistently using tags on my journal, anyway. So ... awhile. :D

I'm also reccing Stranger Things fanart at [community profile] fanart_recs this month and last month - here's the tag.
sholio: glittery Christmas ornaments (Christmas ornament 2)
DECEMBER ALREADY, AAAAA.

It's [community profile] fandom_stocking time again! Signup post here. I love f_s; I think it's my favorite winter fandom event. ♥

And there's a new Agent Carter fanworks exchange in town: Agent Carter Valentines. It's a relationship-based exchange (gen or ship) due on Valentine's Day. Tumblr comm here; the exchange itself is run through AO3.
sholio: heart in a cup of tea (Heart)
My stocking is full of lovely things! Fic, icons, recipes, pretty pictures, vid recs, and lots more. <3

Here are the fics I wrote. First, on AO3:

Avalanche Country (Agent Carter, 9200 wds, Peggy + Jack + Daniel gen; Jack and Peggy are caught in an avalanche while on a mission.)
Droid Soul (Star Wars TFA, 800 wds, Poe + BB-8, daemon AU; Poe's daemon settles as a droid.)
Glass Walls (Legends of Tomorrow, 5100 wds, Rip + ensemble; Rip is gone, except he's not. A slightly AU take on the first half of season two.)
Sea Change (Legends of Tomorrow, 1500 wds, Mick/Ray; It happens in the middle of a firefight, because of course it does.)
Afterwards (Legends of Tomorrow, 1400 wds, Mick/Ray, explicit; Some missions end better than others.)
til human voices wake us (Captain America, 2100 wds, Steve/Bucky/Natasha OT3-ish gen-ish; Bucky is roused out of cryo in Wakanda; Steve and Natasha are there for him.)
Housewarming (The Flash, 700 wds, Iris/Barry; Iris wants to make her new place with Barry feel like a home.)
The Firestorm Wives Club (The Flash/Legends of Tomorrow, 1300 wds, Caitlin + Clarissa Stein; Sometimes you need to talk to someone who understands.)
Getting Out (White Collar, 1300 wds, Peter + Neal + ensemble; Rescuing Neal is only the first step.)

And then in individual stockings:

Once Upon a Time ficlet - Regina + Henry
Steerswoman character study - Rowan + Bel
Forever Knight ficlet - Nick/Janette
White Collar ficlet - Peter and Neal babysitting baby Neal
White Collar snippet - Peter takes Neal jogging
sholio: glittery Christmas ornaments (Christmas ornament 2)
The stockings are being posted, and mine is now up!

Please link to yours too, if you have one!

Fandom stocking signup time! (What, were you expecting something else? XD)

Signups and instructions are here! I am currently finalizing my signup; this year I'm not going to wait until the last minute, dangit.

Oh by the way, I forgot to say this earlier, but thank you so much to everyone who left me comments on the love meme. ♥ Not having done this before, I'm not sure if there is an etiquette to it (do you answer them? politely ignore them like one is supposed to do with book reviews?) but they made my day brighter; thank you so much. ♥ ♥ ♥

In other news, today I was invited to a creative writing class on campus to talk to undergrads about my romance self-publishing adventures. They also had another local author who is a trad-published fantasy writer, so basically we had an hour-long mini-panel in which we talked about traditional vs. self-publishing and the students asked us questions. Their questions were excellent, and they were interested and curious, and the other panelist was very courteous about taking turns switching back and forth on taking questions with me and not talking over me (actually, if anything, I had to be careful not to talk over the top of him). All in all, it was a great experience, and the instructor is having us and a couple of other local authors come back to do the same for her graduate students in the spring.

And then I had Thai food and watched more of the Flash with [livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion, and was gifted a painting by a 4-year-old who very politely signed it for me. She also "helped" me brush the snow off my car, which was really more like I was brushing the snow off the car with her (literally; she was sort of like a wiggly snow brush extension) but a good time was had by all, at least judging from the giggling.

With the snow coming down like crazy outside, and December having inexplicably arrived, I'm starting to feel some holiday feels, a little bit? I need to put up some decorations around here.
sholio: brightly colored Christmas cookies (Christmas cookies red-green)
I really meant to do a post about this earlier; how has it been more than a week since the stockings went live already?

I was thoroughly delighted with my stocking this year; it was great and you are all invited over to check out my stuff. :D I got fic, art, wallpapers, icons, recs, and holiday greetings; it's all absolutely wonderful and I had so much fun going through it. THANK YOU! ♥

Here's what I wrote!

Longer fics:

Stars to Guide You Home (Star Wars Episode VII, Rey, gen, 3600 wds)
Rey gets migraines. Back in the desert she used to just put up with them.

Reap the Whirlwind (Jessica Jones, Jessica/Trish, 1200 wds)
Jessica's running, again. But this time Trish won't let her.

Typical Day at the Office (White Collar, Neal & Peter, gen, 1800 wds)
Neal gets thrown through a plate-glass window.

Midnight Visitor (White Collar; Peter & Elizabeth & Neal; 1900 wds)
Missing scene for 2x08, after Peter is poisoned.

Shorter ficlets:

Peggy and Jarvis - Jarvis fixing her up after a mission gone wrong (Agent Carter)
Peggy and Angie Christmas fic (Agent Carter)
Rodney taking apart Ronon's blaster (Stargate Atlantis)
Neal picking Peter's pocket (White Collar)
Steve, Bucky, and Natasha get a house together (MCU, set after AoU)
sholio: brightly colored Christmas cookies (Christmas cookies red-green)
Well, after getting off to an extremely slow start (I didn't do anything until after the first of the year) I made a big last-minute push to write things for people's stockings and I have now filled eight of them! As usual, there are a bunch I haven't managed to get to ... so if you're someone I have friended and we share at least one fandom, I probably have your stocking open in a tab right now and am staring at it guiltily. It's not you, it's me!

(ETA: I just saw that the mod announced that [community profile] fandom_stocking reveals won't be until Friday evening, so there are a couple of extra days for stocking stuffing!)

I also really need to do my signup for Chocolate Box ([community profile] chocolateboxcomm), because they close tomorrow! It's a relationship-focused fic exchange that only has a 300-word minimum, so it ought to be super easy and they have a ton of different options (both gen and ship) in the tagset.

Other random stuff: I still vastly prefer LJ/DW to Tumblr, but I have really been wanting one particular tumblr feature on LJ lately, namely the "J" key, which skips to the next post. People are typically good about cutting long posts, but especially with blog feeds, there's a lot of scrolling. I've gotten so used to it that I keep hitting "J" and then wondering why nothing seems to be happening. IS MY KEYBOARD BROKEN? No, dumbass, the problem is that you aren't on tumblr.
sholio: Red ball with snow (Christmas ornament)
gaaahhhh, I'm sick AGAIN. My immune system is hereby on notice.

But in much better news, [community profile] fandom_stocking stockings are still being hung, and mine is up now!

http://fandom-stocking.dreamwidth.org/581273.html

Requested fandoms: Agent Carter, White Collar, Shadows of the Apt (Adrian Tchaikovsky), Dark Matter, Rusalka series (CJ Cherryh), Alliance/Union (CJ Cherryh).

Of course now that it's too late to edit, THIS is when I think of other things I should have included. For example, I forgot to mention in my likes that I absolutely love AUs, of either the total-AU or "turn left at canon" variety. :D

If you have a stocking and would like to link it in the comments, please do! If you posted a holiday wishlist, as some people do (as I used to, once upon a time, but didn't this year), please feel free to link to that, as well.
sholio: brightly colored Christmas cookies (Christmas cookies red-green)
Signups are open for [community profile] fandom_stocking! \o/ It's the only holiday fandom thing I'm doing this year, but I always look forward to it hugely. I'll link to my stocking when it's up.

If you haven't done Fandom Stocking before, you describe your fandoms and your likes/dislikes in a comment to the signup post, using the given template, and then your "stocking" will be posted by the mods as an individual post to the community, so people can "fill" it with fic, art, holiday wishes, etc. There is no pressure to post fills if you have a stocking, which makes it ideal if you might like to receive a treat, but don't want the pressure of signing up for a holiday exchange (which is very much me this year).

Fannishly relevant for some: Captain America: Civil War trailer vid made by [personal profile] gwyn. (I am still avoiding the trailer as best I can, so no vid for me.)

I was thinking today about how the Internet, while it is the world's greatest research tool in many ways, is not a replacement for certain references of a more old-fashioned type. Like an in-depth book on a particular subject, or, as was the case today, a good road atlas. You'd think Google Maps would work just as well, but it actually doesn't for things like trying to figure out the general relationship of one place to another, or looking for the names of towns in [x] vicinity, at least not without a bunch of extremely frustrating zooming in and out.

I should note that this may not be true for everyone. But my way of mentally organizing data tends to take place in a "big picture" holistic kind of way, and the inability to easily view large-scale and small-scale data at once on Google Maps makes it more difficult for me than just looking up the relevant areas on an atlas that doesn't change contextually like that.

Admittedly Google is far superior at figuring the distances and travel times between places, however.
sholio: brightly colored Christmas cookies (Christmas cookies red-green)
The Fandom Stockings are revealed! Mine is here and I got lots of lovely stuff -- pictures and ficlets and recs and greetings. I'm delighted with it. :D

I did not manage to get to all the stockings I wanted to fill this year, but I ended up writing a fair amount of stuff, though it's mostly unfinished snippets. Here's what I wrote this year:

White Collar:
A scene from an AU in which Peter is a criminal and Neal is an agent for [personal profile] veleda_k
Post-finale reunion ficlet for [personal profile] leesa_perrie
A different post-finale reunion ficlet for [personal profile] pipilj
A little more of the Iceland fic I posted in comments awhile back for [personal profile] aqwt101 (here's the other piece)
A little more of the White Collar/October Daye fusion Frith and I share for [personal profile] frith_in_thorns (following on directly from the snippet she wrote for me last fandom stocking)
Snippets from a post-finale Christmas story for [personal profile] sheron
Werewolf Peter playing in the snow for [livejournal.com profile] kanarek13
Diana is afflicted with Theo's uncles for [personal profile] sheenianni
(the latter two written as snippets in my own comments as thank-yous to people who gave me something when I hadn't given them anything!)

MCU:
Scene from a fic in which Bucky never gets his memories back but becomes friends with Steve anyway for [personal profile] trobadora

btw, it is perfectly fine with me if people who aren't the recipient comment on these; I think it's perfectly fine, although you might wait 'til the recipient has a chance to comment first if they haven't yet. :D I would have posted some of them on AO3, but none are really finished enough to do that (and the only one which actually is a complete story, Veleda's story, has a major plot hole that needs to be fixed >_>).
sholio: sun on winter trees (Default)
There's a post on Diana Wynne Jones over at my website blog. One of my goals in 2015 is to a) resurrect that blog, and b) start actively using it. Well, it's part of a larger plan to do more serious author stuff in 2015, including working on some sort of Organized Social Media Presence (TM).

.... Not that myself and "organized" belong in the same sentence. Ha. Along those lines, I'm not sure if I've mentioned here that I have a Twitter which has languished in obscurity forever but I AM NOW ACTUALLY UPDATING.

And, further developing the topic of not being organized ... hello, LJ and DW! You can see I fell completely off the regular posting bandwagon. I still have a number of December questions to answer (I know I said I might not answer them, which may sadly become true, but I really want to; there were some excellent questions!) and I will try to start up the I-Man rewatch posts again at some point.

I did manage to write 4 ficlets so far for [community profile] fandom_stocking, which I feel good about. I would like to write some more, but the unveiling is tomorrow or thereabouts, which makes it unlikely I'll manage more since most of tomorrow will be taken up with RL stuff. ETA: Fandom Stocking is also looking for volunteers to help fill stockings if you have a bit of free time!

I've also just discovered that a bill I know I paid went to a collection agency, and I have no idea what to do about it. It is a very small bill too! Should I just pay it again? Disputing sounds like more trouble than it's worth. Augh. Adulting is hard. /o\
sholio: Cocoa in red cup with cinnamon stick (Christmas cocoa)
- My fandom stocking is up! I love Fandom Stocking so much; it's such a delightful, no-pressure fest. (And they're still taking signups, if you're interested!) I've been having so much trouble writing lately that this is clearly not going to be one of those years when I try to put something in the stocking of everyone I know, but since I haven't really been doing holiday fic exchanges the last few years, this is where most of my fic-gifting efforts take place.

Books:

- Stranger by Rachel Manija Brown and Sherwood Smith is really fun, especially if you're more into the community-building aspect of post-apocalypse scenarios than the destruction aspects (which I am). There's a large ensemble cast and an overall hopeful, "most people are basically good at heart" vibe. One of the things I liked about the book is that for the most part, even the really unpleasant people in the group (the bigots, the snobs) are still fundamentally decent and willing to come through in a crisis; it's not a case of ~everyone who doesn't get along with the main characters is EEEEEVIL~, which I really appreciated. There's also a general sense that, while the book (being YA) is primarily focused on the teenagers, the adults have a really interesting backstory that I want to know more about! I'm looking forward to the sequel.

- Dresden Files: War Cry - Graphic novel which came in my Amazon order yesterday, and turned out to be an unexpected delight because I somehow missed that it's written by Jim Butcher and is therefore actual canon (it takes place between Dead Beat and Proven Guilty). And as well as featuring the Wardens, so we get to see the comics versions of Luccio and Ramirez, it's FULL OF THOMAS. Thomas and Harry snarking at each other, saving each other's lives, etc ... in case that's, you know, an enticement for anyone. :> You get quite a lot of Thomas's POV in this, too, which is something that's lacking in the novels since they're all in Harry's viewpoint. The cover art for War Cry #5 (the graphic novel is a collection of 5 single issues) is also Relevant To My Interests. Sadly this is not an actual scene from the comic. But it is still nifty.

In general I kinda can't get over how much Butcher obviously loves writing Harry and Thomas, and how fanficcy his side stories with those two tend to be. (Still not over the birthday story. NEVER OVER THE BIRTHDAY STORY.) War Cry also includes a scene where Cut for spoiler, which is also span-texted out )

Something I was also thinking about, Dresden Files-related, is that the part of the series from approximately Blood Rites to just before Turn Coat is where my heart is anchored in that series. I don't know if it's just because that was the general time period when I started reading so I imprinted on it, and it's not that there haven't been plenty of things I've enjoyed in the books since then, but that's "my" Dresden Files, and it was really nice to have another story from that era.
sholio: Hand outlines on a cave wall (Cave painting-Hands)
My Fandom Stocking is awesome; it is here if you want to enjoy all the goodies too! Thank you SO much to everyone for all your wonderful presents! I got fic, art, icons, recs, greetings and even a VID!!! You guys are the best. Seriously. ♥

As for the various gifts that I made for other people, I'll repost them here over the next couple of weeks.

Diana Squeefest is still ongoing! (Also on DW.) I really need to go participate more ...

Random other stuff: I stumbled across Enneagram personality types yesterday. Naturally this resulted in me trying to map various sets of characters onto it, mine and other people's -- including the White Collar ones. Peter is obviously a 1; Mozzie is a 5; Neal is probably a 4, which is amusingly apt because an emotionally healthy Type 4 picks up characteristics of a Type 1.

Speaking of White Collar, remember the Culper spy ring episode from season four? There is going to be a TV series about the Culper Spies. (Trailer here - ETA: new trailer link since the other one didn't work!) I am unsure how I feel about this. I love historical fiction and spy/intrigue stuff, and I'm even currently interested in the American Revolution period, so you'd think this would be right up my alley ... but anything mainstream and American-made dealing with that time period is always so terribly, terribly caricatured. It might turn out to be more nuanced than it looks, but based on the trailer I'm pretty much getting the usual sense of ~evil British~ and noble rebels, and I'm just not interested in that.
sholio: Peter from White Collar, with gun (WhiteCollar-Peter with gun)
I thought about trying to come up with a better title for this, but what else could so accurately capture its essence? This is White Collar ... IN SPAAAACE! Written for [community profile] fandom_stocking, naturally.

Alternate universe, 2100 words, gen, no spoilers for anything canonical; also posted to AO3.

White Collar IN SPACE! )
sholio: Neal from White Collar, hand on hat (WhiteCollar-Neal hat)
It's snowing here, which makes this an excellent opportunity to repost another of my [community profile] fandom_stocking fics. :D

Title: Snow Day
Fandom: White Collar
Word Count: 2700
Pairing: gen
Summary: It's snowing too hard for Peter to go home to Brooklyn, so Neal takes him home to June's instead.
