Fandom Stocking 2: The Stockening

Well, after getting off to an extremely slow start (I didn't do anything until after the first of the year) I made a big last-minute push to write things for people's stockings and I have now filled eight of them! As usual, there are a bunch I haven't managed to get to ... so if you're someone I have friended and we share at least one fandom, I probably have your stocking open in a tab right now and am staring at it guiltily. It's not you, it's me!

(ETA: I just saw that the mod announced that fandom_stocking reveals won't be until Friday evening, so there are a couple of extra days for stocking stuffing!)

I also really need to do my signup for Chocolate Box (chocolateboxcomm), because they close tomorrow! It's a relationship-focused fic exchange that only has a 300-word minimum, so it ought to be super easy and they have a ton of different options (both gen and ship) in the tagset.

Other random stuff: I still vastly prefer LJ/DW to Tumblr, but I have really been wanting one particular tumblr feature on LJ lately, namely the "J" key, which skips to the next post. People are typically good about cutting long posts, but especially with blog feeds, there's a lot of scrolling. I've gotten so used to it that I keep hitting "J" and then wondering why nothing seems to be happening. IS MY KEYBOARD BROKEN? No, dumbass, the problem is that you aren't on tumblr.

but you have been granted extension by migraine! er... which sucks for the fandom stocking mod, but means that reveals will happen Friday evening, according to the latest mod post.

I JUST saw that and eta'd it in! It's terrible that she's not feeling well, of course, but more time for stuffing stockings is definitely nice.

Oh, you're very welcome! :) I wouldn't have known in the first place if someone hadn't told me. Tumblr hides its useful features very well. ;)

Same! I always just scroll down or page down. J would be useful to know for when there's a loooooong post to scroll past, though.

I also love LJ/DW much more dearly, but I do wish in my heart for the scheduling posts feature. That's the one thing I do wish I could magically port across. Allt he rest of tumblr's set-up can stay WELL AWAY, though.

You already sort of can? I mean you change the date of the post to something in the future and it'll schedule the LJ post to post then. Not sure how it compares to Tumblr's scheduling but it does exist I guess?

I thought that meant it posted right away, but was forward-dated, and didn't show up on people's friendslists? But maybe I've been misinterpreting! If it shows up on friendslists when the right day/time comes, that's super useful information, and thank you!

To be honest I'm not 100% certain of the functionality, but I did test it and it said it was 'scheduled' to post and it looks like it doesn't show up until that time. They may have changed the functionality over the years because I do remember it working sort of the way you talk about originally.... Test it :D

Yess +1, I would love the Tumblr J key functionality on DW, especially for blog feeds.

There is a J key shortcut in Tumblr? huh. I didn't know that, and boy, would it be handy next time I end up with that damn 'what color is the sky' is reblogged, AGAIN, by someone I follow :( I hate that post. And there are a few other posts that are so long that I'm scrolling forever!!!

So, the feature I want most on tumblr (besides DATING POSTS, OMG, was this posted yesterday or two years ago?) is the ability to 'mark' where one was left off reading, so when you pick up your phone again several hours later, you can start there, or something like that.

There is! :D I didn't know about it 'til someone told me awhile back, but I use it ALL THE TIME. And a way to mark your place would be useful, although I don't even try to read my whole dash; I just read whatever the most recent posts are.

It DOES help a lot to turn off infinite scrolling and go page by page instead. I don't know if you can do that on the mobile version, though.
