The No-Frills Friending Meme, 2023 edition

Spooky season is upon us, the weather is turning gray and wet (or sunny and hot, depending on your hemisphere), and I think it's time for a friending meme. Come meet new people! (Re)Populate your DW circle!

Since I'm getting more active on DW again, or at least I'm trying to, is there anyone lurking around who wants locked post access and doesn't already have it?

I don't post locked a LOT, but I might start doing more of my book/TV/etc reactions under lock (not that anything bad happened, just to head off things like authors commenting on book posts to argue with me which has TOTALLY HAPPENED), and I'm completely fine with giving people access, especially if you've also given it to me. I don't tend to pay a lot of attention to who's got me friended, so I probably have people around here that I owe access to going back to the LJ days. >.>

Anyway, if you want access, just ticky the box below.

Open to: Registered Users, detailed results viewable to: Just the Poll Creator, participants: 51

Would you like to be given access?

Yes please!
51 (100.0%)

EDIT: I didn't express myself well - this is just for anyone who doesn't already have locked post access to my DW! I had a horrified expression of "Wait, I didn't give THEM access?!" for a minute there, but if you already have locked access to my journal, you can see my posts! This is just for people who are not already "friended" in the LJ sense but would like to be - not a new filter I'm making, just access in general.

Putting this here partly for my own use so I can stop having to ask people how to do this, and partly for the use of others, in case there are things I post about frequently (*cough* Iron Fist *cough*) that some people might wish to avoid having to read about.

I think you need a paid DW account, but if you have one, you can filter out tags. To do that:

- Go to Organize --> Manage Filters
- Select subscription filters (which is where it goes by default anyway) and select your main reading filter from the drop-down, probably "Default" if you haven't done anything with it.
- A list of everyone you're following will pop up. Select the person you want to filter. Now you'll get a list over on the right-hand side of their tags and various other options.
- Change the "entry is tagged with ..." drop-down to "none", and then start clicking on tags you want to filter out. (Or you can do it the other way and leave it on "all" or "some" if you just want to follow a couple of my tags.)
- The tags you're filtering will appear in a list under the "none/all/some" drop-down. If you click the wrong one by accident, click it again in the list of filtered tags to change it back.

This is going to be a pain with me because I have a million tags I AM SO SORRY. >_> On the other hand, it means you can see everything at a glance and select all the ones for any fandom you hate, since my long-standing habit on DW/LJ is to use separate tags for fic, recs, and the fandom generally. I'm also pretty consistent about tagging posts and rarely post things untagged, so that'll work out in your favor.

FWIW I'm also totally cool if you stop following me, or just quietly filter me off your reading page, in case our interests have diverged. It happens.

I'm currently in the process of a much-needed tag overhaul for my journal. As you might expect, in a journal I've had since 2006 (and in which I only haphazardly used to tag things, especially in the early days) my tags are a mess. The fanfic ones, at least, are fairly well-organized and consistent, but I had a bunch of tags that were vague or weirdly worded or duplicates (e.g. both a "vids" and a "songvids" tag, which are now merged under "fanvids"; tags for "my books", "books by me", "fiction by me", "pro fiction by me", etc). I had a lot of tags that really needed top-level tags, so now, for example, my tags for separate book series and authors are sorted under a top-level books tag (e.g. "books:dresden files" instead of being tagged random variations like "dresden_files" and whatnot). The book posts could still use another pass for better and more consistent sorting, because they're mostly just tagged under the top-level "books" tag and/or a variety of inconsistently-worded series and author tags, but I don't have to do that right now.

I've known that I needed to do this for awhile, but the main reason why I've dragged my feet for so long was because of the dreadful thought of organizing 400+ tags on both my DW and LJ to match. I've settled that in favor of just not redoing the tags on the LJ side. Yes, it means they will now be out of sync, and a number of tags on LJ will now have EVEN MORE duplicates due to future crossposts, making it harder to find things.

But aside from not really wanting to hassle with it, I feel like the main function of the LJ journal is as an archive at this point anyway. And some of my old tags are interesting snapshots in time, of my thought processes or of changing terminology, like the way I used to tag with "ficathon" what we now call fandom exchanges. So keeping all the old tags feels more appropriate. Anyway, I don't think I could ever remember all the changes and merges to make them sync up completely even if I tried.

(I am going to have to remember not to import tags if I ever run another import from LJ -- something I haven't done in a number of years, and probably won't, but that'd screw my DW tags all to hell. So I'm basically making a note of that here to remind myself not to.)

So yeah, behold my new and better-organized tag page! At least, organized to the extent that it is. A number of the more random and rarely-used tags are never going to get top-level categories, and I'm still figuring out how to categorize some things - I think the one I'm most torn about right now is the variety of tags I used to use for short fic - "commentfic", "promptfic", "prompts", "vignette", etc. Right now I've got it as "fanfic:promptfic" and "challenge:prompts" (also "fanfic:shortfic" for the extremely outdated "vignette" tag that I don't think I've used since 2008). But I think some of my new tags will also need to be edited and perhaps reconsidered as I put them into practice and find out whether they're easy to use and intuitive enough for me to remember them.

With Tumblr being more Tumblr than usual lately, I'm currently telling people on Tumblr about Dreamwidth, and one of the offputting things about Dreamwidth (for people used to Tumblr) is that it moves much more slowly than Tumblr does and it can be tough to find new people to follow. But December is a better-than-usual time for new people to check out DW, because the December posting meme means it's more active than usual! (I also pointed people to [personal profile] snickfic's friending meme.)

So, if you're doing the December meme, posting things unlocked, and might be open to having new people stop by to read your entries, raise a hand in the comments? If you're still taking questions and would be open to taking them from people outside your circle, please feel free to link to that post as well.

ETA: As per some discussion in the comments, if you post locked but are open to adding new people if asked, please feel free to comment and say so as well.

You can also link this around if you like. Let's face it, a central listing of December-posting-meme blogs is a general good thing for everybody!

Does anyone know if there is a way to force a community to load comment pages in the default DW style (the pink-on-gray one) unless the user's style overrides it? That is, individual journals can be set to have "light" comment pages instead of the main journal style; you do it from the "site skins" section of the settings. But when I switch to any of my communities, the "site skins" options vanish.

(The reason why I want to do it is because I cannot find a community site scheme that doesn't produce what are, to my eyes, cluttered and hard-to-read comment pages, especially for people unfamiliar with DW. The pink one isn't perfect, but it's far and away less cluttered and easier to figure out the comment nesting. WHY CAN YOU NOT F*CKING DO THIS.)

ETA: While I'm at it, why is it so incredibly hard to keep the DW journal site style page from snapping back to your main journal without telling you it's done so? Is that a browser issue on my end, or something that happens to other people? At least this time I only managed to change my tagline to that of the community I was editing. Typically I end up changing my entire site style every time I try to edit a community, because it WON'T TELL YOU - it's just like "yep, still working as [community name]" and then changes your entire journal. >___> My least favorite thing about DW is probably the a;skjf;ldsj;lad;; community management, in general.

ETA2: Thank you so much to [personal profile] ratcreature for telling me how - I was completely wrong about which part of the settings it was in (it's actually the ticky box in the above link that says to use the chosen style instead of the site style, which is ticked by default, but if you untick it, the pages show up exactly as I want them). For some reason I never parsed that phrasing as doing what it actually does.

As many of you may have heard by now, Livejournal is now keeping its servers in Russia (websites' privacy controls, legal redresses in case something happens, and so forth are bound by the laws of whatever country the servers are physically located in), which is leading to a lot of account deletions from worried users in, mostly, the U.S.

I'm not planning on doing so; as far as I can tall, all the likely worst-case scenarios that I've seen discussed (an increased likelihood of credit card theft, having your personal information sold, theft/duplication of copyrighted material, etc) are already risks anywhere you have an online presence. I don't think people pulling up stakes and moving elsewhere are wrong to do so, especially if they're not using the site anyway; I just don't feel like I need to. The only thing I'm thinking about is maybe not renewing my paid account when it lapses so a) I don't have my credit card info on there, and b) am not financially supporting a business that is known to actively delete/suppress accounts on political grounds. Even so, though ... at least as far as the credit-card risk is concerned ... I've known people who had their credit card info stolen and used by thieves because of info leaks from Bank of America and Walmart, and I just tonight gave my billing info to an online site I've never heard of to buy an art book from Malaysia. idk. It's impossible to do business online without some level of risk.

However, I'm glad I have a journal mirror at DW. I'll still crosspost everything, and in all likelihood any new communities/journals I create from here on out will be DW-only, if only because of the added exodus from LJ and increased probability that LJ as a company, at least the English-language side of it, is tottering along on its last legs.

More information: here, here, here, and here.

(Though obviously if anyone wants to present an alternate POV in the comments that I'm not taking into account, feel free. Like I said, I don't mind other people doing it; I'm just not really feeling the need to, myself. Plausibly, as far as "bad things that are now more likely to happen," I think the most likely one is that LJ is now one step closer to the end of its internet-site life cycle and is just going to stop existing someday. So backing up is a good idea.)

btw, if I've friended you on LJ but haven't given you access on DW, just say something; it's not intentional, it's just that I never bothered strictly duplicating my circle/flist in the two places, and I don't have notifications of new friendings/circle-addings turned on, so I'll never notice if someone added me in the other place.

After tossing around the idea of doing an original fic commentfest at DW in the comments to the last post - I went and made one! If you don't have a DW journal, you can comment anonymously or with OpenID. I also have some invite codes if you want one.

(Shiny new icon is made by [livejournal.com profile] china_shop, who has more of them here!)
sholio: Text: "Age shall not weary her, nor custom stale her infinite squee" (Infinite Squee)
In the vein of the other commentfests going on for [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw, I wanted to try my own hand at hosting one. :) And no one seems to be running one just for original (i.e. non-fannish) fic, so ... let's try it!

Prompts:

- Prompts should include a character or characters, and a prompt or situation. For example: A robot, a ghost, and a werewolf walk into a bar or Two dogs discussing their owners or Kady, a female astronaut: "There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio"

- When leaving prompts, you can use completely generic characters ("two guys on a bus"), supply details about them ("Jimmy Wu, a young Marine from Kentucky who just got married") or use original characters that you've already created (as long as you're okay with other people writing about them).

- You can either post your fill as a comment to the prompt, or post it in your own journal and link to it. Please put your title, rating, and any warnings in the subject line.

- Any subject matter and rating is fine, but please include a rating for your story (using any rating system you like) and, at your own discretion, it would be appreciated if you'd label for commonly triggery/disturbing subject matter, such as character death and non-consensual sex. (If you don't wish to spoil the story, you can also use a generic label such as "Dark" or "Contains potentially triggering content".) This is not required, but would be appreciated as a courtesy.

- Prompts may be filled more than once, and you can also fill your own prompts.

- Prompt fills should be posted only at DW for three weeks from the date you post it, as described here, and then can be posted anywhere.

Questions? Feel free to ask! I haven't tried something like this before, so I'm totally open to suggestions and comments. :)

[community profile] three_weeks_for_dw is a 3-week period at the end of April/beginning of May to encourage content-posting on DW. (Here's an explanation.) I was thinking about doing something for it this year, since I still post my (relatively infrequent) locked posts to LJ only and a lot of the fannish places where I play are on LJ; it seems fair to do a little DW-only stuff too, since I like both places. But, yeah, no time. However, here are some currently ongoing multifandom DW commentfic fests that are Relevant To My Interests:

- The People With Disabilities Being Awesome Commentfic Fest hosted by [personal profile] terajk (now with an index of prompts on Delicious). Come on people, leave me some Highlander prompts so I don't have to resort to answering my own. *g* Thus far, I have written this untitled commentfic (though it grew to about 1400 words, not so much of a commentfic after all) for the prompt "Dresden Files - Michael Carpenter - 'Get away from my children'".

- Friendship Fic Comment Fest at [personal profile] littlegreen42. NEEDS MORE PROMPTS. :D (Highlander? Stargate? A:tLA? :D?)

- Asexy Fanworks Comment Meme at [community profile] asexual_fandom.

And here are a few that might be relevant to my flist's interests:

- Female Trope Character Fest at [personal profile] such_heights.

- Transfic Mini Fest hosted by [personal profile] kanata.

- [personal profile] livrelibre has a big list of commentfic fests with several that I didn't know about.

- ETA: And also the fantastically awesome 3W4DW anime/manga/manhwa/manhua drabblefest hosted by [personal profile] littlebutfierce! SO MANY FESTS I CANNOT KEEP UP WITH THEM ALL.

These bite-sized fic fests are great for me right now, because I really can't spare the time to sit down and write anything long, but having all these prompts available is giving me oodles of inspiration to scribble off something short.

This entry is also posted at http://friendshipper.dreamwidth.org/341576.html with comments.

Based on the number of "... what is Dreamwidth?" answers to the poll in my last post, here is a quick overview. (As I understand it, anyway; I have a number of the people who are involved and/or enthusiastic backers of the site on my f'list, but I'm not personally involved with it. Please correct me if I pass along misinformation!)

- Dreamwidth is a new journaling/blogging site that will be opening up this summer. It's planned to be fandom-friendly (edit: but not exclusively fannish) and fairly small, at least at first. You will need to either buy an account or get an invite code from an existing user to get in, like LJ used to be. (Paid accounts start at $3/month, and you can let your account lapse to a free account later if you like.)

- Here is a list of features that are different from LJ (discovered via [livejournal.com profile] foxfirefey)

- Here is a roundup of posts by people who are planning on switching from LJ (link from [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong)

- Here is Dreamwidth's About/FAQ page (still in beta itself) with sundry informative links.

The answers to the poll in my earlier post indicate that (at least around these parts) most people who are opening DW accounts will still be cross-posting to LJ, and many people won't be moving at all, at least not until things shake out a bit. One of the nice things about Dreamwidth is that, from what I can see, it's being designed so that it will be easy to use with other blogging sites -- i.e. you can have an LJ and still participate easily in DW discussions, be friended by people on DW, etc., and it works very smoothly with Open ID.

First, before I type anything else - I just realized that I never thanked the people who nominated me for Stargate fan awards. So ... THANK YOU, wonderful people! I'm so sorry it took me so long to say so! *bows in your general direction*

Anyway, moving on ... Dreamwidth (new fandom-friendly journaling platform) has announced their open beta dates (accounts will be available April 30).
