December posting meme - sound off!

With Tumblr being more Tumblr than usual lately, I'm currently telling people on Tumblr about Dreamwidth, and one of the offputting things about Dreamwidth (for people used to Tumblr) is that it moves much more slowly than Tumblr does and it can be tough to find new people to follow. But December is a better-than-usual time for new people to check out DW, because the December posting meme means it's more active than usual! (I also pointed people to snickfic's friending meme.)

So, if you're doing the December meme, posting things unlocked, and might be open to having new people stop by to read your entries, raise a hand in the comments? If you're still taking questions and would be open to taking them from people outside your circle, please feel free to link to that post as well.

ETA: As per some discussion in the comments, if you post locked but are open to adding new people if asked, please feel free to comment and say so as well.

I would read Sam's Cafe but never posted. I'm chatty in small spaces (HI SHOLIO ;D) but shy in big ones - my foot likes to live in my mouth, and when you do it often enough, you get put off!

Ah, well, at least you know the format of the site. My partner was handholding some younger folks through navigating Dreamwidth on chat earlier. They were like, 'how do I find my friends?' and she was talking them through 'that box in the top corner? type what you're looking for in there and press go.'

Gosh yes. I had an LJ before I had a husband ;) so it didn't occur to me than folks to came to fandom through Tumblr might react to this sort of platform the way I reacted to Tumblr, which was mostly HOW DO I FAN HERE?

I don't think we'll see a mass migration here - the gifs are going to be a dealbreaker for lots of folks - but hopefully there'll be some uptick in activity, even if it's just a bunch of us coming back! I've seen some really good 'how to dreamwidth' posts, and folks do seem to be trying to make it welcoming.

The vast majority of my posts are public, so I'm happy for people to follow me. I might not give them access to the non-public posts if I don't know them very well, but as I said, the majority are public so that shouldn't be a big issue (I hope). And as I mainly post lols and stupid stuff (with the odd fandom thing here and there), that might attract a wider range of people. Of course, I'm so gen and generally SFW, I might not appeal to everyone.

This is a fabulous idea. :) LJ/DW have always had a special place in my heart and my fandom. I moved over to Tumblr reluctantly because I wasn't a huge fan of the platform and mechanics...I really started liking it, then I was over it, and now it's imploding. >.< I'm not as active as I used to be, I don't have pics and whatnot, but I am always happy to read and comment on people's posts and interact with new friends! :)

I've had this journal for years mostly as a base for my RP stuff, but I'd definitely love to get back into using DW as an actual proper blogging platform, and would absolutely be open to friending people/commenting on stuff! I'm not doing a formal question meme or anything (yet) — but I will be posting some stuff (starting today, hopefully).

(Although, feel free to point me to a posting meme, because that could definitely be a way to get some stuff on this journal....)

My main fandom interest right now is Marvel, pretty much — both MCU and comics, and in particular I love the cosmic side of Marvel (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel, etc), but I'm pretty well into most aspects of the universe! Non-fandom interests include movies, psychology, media analysis and criticism, feminism, LGBT issues, and so on and so forth.

It might be worth stressing to Tumblr refugees, who aren't used to a culture of private posting, that many people de facto friends lock all posts because they're trying to hide from Big Data, not because they're trying to hide from other people? And that the culture is generally encouraging and welcoming toward people who comment asking to be given access. I think the tendency toward locked posting makes people think DW is much more of a graveyard than it actually is.

Haha, and I had always assumed that hiding from other people was exactly why people lock stuff! It is for me, usually, and I'm pretty choosy about who I give access to (it's usually only people I've known for awhile or otherwise have some specific reason for giving access to), though admittedly I'm a lot less choosy now than I used to be when both journaling sites were more active. I had assumed that people who mainly post locked are equally choosy about giving access, hence me not directing traffic their way.

Which I guess raises the excellent point that people lock for different reasons, and the idea of asking for access might not occur to someone who comes from a social media background where access locking is not a thing.

I think some of this comes down to different communities having different practices; while these days I follow a lot of fandom people, I didn't come to journaldom through fandom, and public posting was definitely not the done thing in the BDSM scene. But neither was the idea of being choosy about who you gave access to; if someone asked and understood what they were asking for, they were pretty much automatically in.

Oh, that makes sense! And different people DO use it differently and for varying levels of choosiness about who they give access to, of course. I think most people probably don't mind being asked.

Well, I had e-stalkers for nearly ten years, and before that, nearly everything I posted was public. And DW doesn't have a "culture of private posting" really -- it's the granular privacy controls everyone was supposedly jazzed about re Pillowfort. You can have public posts, circle-locked posts, or private posts. Tumblr only had on/off privacy controls.

As noted above, I'm coming from a place where fanworks fandom is not my origin point to journaldom. The subcultures I've historically spent the most time in absolutely do have a culture of private posting. (One of the things that limits my interaction with fanfic fandom on DW is that I'm uncomfortable commenting on public posts--I almost didn't comment here.)

My DW is unlocked 98% of the time, and generally (unless it's filtered because I'm discussing my yuletide assignment or something) even locked posts are accessible to everyone who subscribes to me (at least, I've tried to set it up that way).

I'm not doing the talking meme in December but I do plan to do it in January. My main fandoms right now are Star Wars, MCU (with a focus on Captain America and Spiderman, though I am excited for Captain Marvel), some DCU, the Good Place, B99, Steven Universe, Killjoys, The Expanse, and Rivers of London. I am occasionally nostalgic for HP and Firefly and The Middleman. *g* I'm also a sports fan, but not in the media fandom way.

I've had a DW for a handful of months and am going to be trying to post more, and maybe do some kind of posting/talking meme (we'll see if anyone shows up).
