sholio: Carol Danvers glowing (Avengers-CM Carol glowing)
We saw it last night, and I had a great time!

(This icon has NOTHING to do with literally ANYTHING in this movie but it's about my closest one to a generic superhero icon.)

I do NOT think this is the movie to start with if you've never seen a superhero movie or even if you've never seen a Deadpool movie, but it was a lot of fun and I'm glad I didn't know much about it beforehand .... other than, y'know, Deadpool and Wolverine.

A few things I particularly liked )
sholio: Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy (Avengers-GotG-Gamora)
In no particular order. Also, I have exactly one GotG icon right now because I got rid of the rest of them in the last year or so, thinking I wouldn't need them anymore and wanting to free up space for Biggles icons. In retrospect I obviously cursed myself.

Lots of spoilers, again )
sholio: Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy (Avengers-GotG-Gamora)
I went and saw a movie. In the theater. Like in the Before Times. It was Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and I'm having so many feelings right now.

General mood reaction without specifics )

Spoilers if you need to know about major character deaths before seeing this movie )

The actual specific spoilers )
sholio: Chess queen looking horrified (Chess piece oh noes)
So far, one part of the MCU that hasn't actually interested me at all is the Spider-Man side of the franchise. It's partly that I'm at a stage in my life where I'd rather watch adults than teenagers for the most part, and it's partly that there is something actively offputting for me about Tom Holland's face (the actor is very sweet, I'm sure! it's just! I don't really want to watch him onscreen!!) ... I mean, it's a lot of things, and they're all idiosyncratic and very Me, but what it does lead to is that at least there's one corner of the superheroverse that I don't care about.

Then I watched the trailer for the new movie, and let me tell you a story about 2000s-era Sholio and why I suspect this movie may come for me in a way the others haven't.

Significant spoilers for the trailer, which in turn appears to be pretty spoilery for the movie. And also spoilers for the Raimi Spider-Man movies from the 2000s.

Me? Falling for the villain? More likely than you think. )
sholio: Zemo in fur-collared coat (Avengers-Zemo3)
By way of a gifset showing off Daniel Bruhl's puppy eyes in one particular Civil War scene (the rational part of my brain: let's not forget there's a dead body in the bathtub throughout this scene, however) I ended up rewatching the Zemo scenes in Civil War tonight, as you do ...

(How is this my life now.)

... and thinking about something that [personal profile] sheron and I were talking about recently, which is that while he is absolutely ruthless about his goals, and there are certain categories of people that he seems to kill without remorse (supersoldiers, Hydra, people who are actively trying to kill him), he actually seems to try to go out of his way not to kill, hurt, or even attack most people if he doesn't have to. This is underscored much more heavily than I remembered in his establishing scene with the Hydra guy:

Zemo: Hydra deserves its place on the ash heap, so your death would not bother me. But I'd have to use this book, and other, bloodier methods to find what I need. I don't look forward to that.

It's really interesting to me that they went with this method of introducing him, where it's true that his introduction is ruthless and brutal, but also he appears to be trying to avoid what he considers unnecessary bloodshed or collateral damage, and the plot of the movie is actually his backup plan when the first one doesn't pan out. At the end of that scene, if anything, he looks resigned and unhappy - as he said, he doesn't mind killing the Hydra guy, but he really didn't want to have to do the rest of it.

(There's a deleted scene with an alternate method of Zemo acquiring the book, which appears to involve Zemo killing a room full of people - possibly only knocking them out, but that really didn't look gentle. Anyway, it's one of those narrative decisions where it turns his arc into something very different than if gassing a room full of people and then moving on to terrorism was actually his plan A.)

On the other hand, this rewatch impressed on me all over again how absolutely batshit his Plan B is.

Presumably his original plan - while obsessive, ruthless, and not how we handle emotional trauma, Zemo - was relatively straightforward, with a minimum of collateral damage aside from wrecking the lives of a handful of people he blames for his family's deaths: Interrogate the Hydra guy for the information he needed, fly to Siberia and kill the other Winter Soldiers and get the video, and then, idk, perhaps mail the video to Tony and off himself in Siberia.

But no, that didn't work!

Then he had to go to plan B, which was more like:

"Step 49 of 1107: create a realistic Bucky face mask."

(I mean, it's in character, but also, why are you so extra, Zemo.)

Anyway, I really like how consistent the CW part of his character development actually is with the TFATWS part, allowing for the fact that he's obviously unhinged with grief in 2016 and by the Falcon & Winter Soldier time period, has had some time to deal with it and develop a new Reason For Living (at least 50% less unhinged, though still kinda fanatic).
sholio: silhouette of a man in a long coat against a stained glass window (Avengers-Zemo2)
.... that have been bouncing around in my head. Spoilers for the whole show.

Under here, in no particular order )
sholio: Captain Marvel Yon-Rogg touching Carol's forehead (Avengers-CM Carol Yon-Rogg)
I just realized that Yon-Rogg is basically Vegeta from Dragonball Z, and I don't know what to do with that.

I realized this mostly in thinking of him in terms of a mundane AU - mindfuck Matrix edition, and realized that what I'm basically thinking of is the part of DBZ that originally made me want to write reams of fanfic about Vegeta, where he's basically stuck in a suburban AU on Earth and hates it but can't do anything about it.

He's not the exact same character, but I think a lot of the points of appeal are similar. I guess my general tastes haven't changed that much in the last 20 years after all.

The most hilarious part of this is how much they would both hate the comparison.
sholio: Peggy Carter smiling (Avengers-Peggy smile)
So about that post I made only yesterday about my hoped-for villain redemption arc ...

Captain Marvel 2 advance spoilers )
sholio: book with pink flower (Book & flower)
I did the first challenge at [community profile] vexercises this afternoon, and it was a lot of fun! (Also very hard to make myself follow the rules! I kept wanting to trim or recut the clips.)

Here are the instructions:

1) Pechakucha 2 ways

Create a video edit of exactly 60 seconds consisting of precisely 10 video clips from your chosen source text, each lasting precisely 6 seconds, assembled with straight cuts. Make two versions of your pechakucha, with 1 minute excerpts from two different songs as audio. Fade in and out on your audio at the beginning and end of the audio clip.

[Word to the wise: Most six second clips that you use are bound to have in-clip cuts--you don't have to go looking only for clips that have no internal cuts. But you can make those internal cuts work for you rhythmically or thematically etc!]

I decided to do a Nakia/T'Challa vid since I already have all of Black Panther imported into Final Cut and there are a relatively limited number of scenes featuring both of them, so I wouldn't have too many clips to choose from. I did cheat a little and let the last clip play out for an extra second or two so I could fit all of the Survivor chorus without losing the first few words of the lyrics.

Version 1: High On You (Survivor)

Version 2: Amacala (Siphokazi)

(Note: At the moment, for me, the streaming versions aren't playing, but they play fine if you click through on the Youtube link. Hopefully whatever glitch is causing it will go away soon.)
sholio: Captain America in the rain (Avengers-Steve rain)
Not posting on Tumblr because I don't like hitting myself in the head with hammers, but I was having a conversation with [personal profile] sheron this morning about Endgame and I got to thinking about my biggest narrative problem with it, namely ...

Spoilers and vague Endgame negativity )

ETA: More specific Endgame and general MCU negativity in comments.
sholio: sun on winter trees (Default)
Here's the list!

My unpopular(?) Marvel opinion is that I'm kinda hitting superhero burnout. I'm not that enthused about anything upcoming, and I think it's mainly because I just kind of want it to stop for awhile. They built up for ten years to their ~big finale~ and then put out the next movie in the franchise two months later! Let it breathe, guys.

That being said, the handful of things I'm looking forward to ...

A few spoilers )

What are you looking forward to? My normal spoilerphobe policy is on hold for this; feel free to talk about anything that's been revealed about the upcoming, unreleased shows/movies so far, since there isn't much yet.
sholio: sun on winter trees (Avengers-GotG-Starlord with raccoon)
So the fact that I now have a GotG icon probably tells you all you need to know about how I reacted to the movie. I did not go in expecting to love it. I actually was lukewarm on the first one (which, by the way, I am totally buying so I can rewatch it now, because Netflix does not have it streaming, the jerks).

I DID NOT EXPECT TO LOVE THIS MOVIE. AT ALL.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE A WHOLE LOT.

I also think the trailer for this movie (the first teaser trailer, the Fox on the Run one) might be one of the best trailers I've ever seen, because it a) took me from "meh" to really wanting to see this movie, and b) did not actually spoil ANYTHING! I went into this completely unspoiled -- in fact, far less spoiled than I thought I was after seeing the trailer -- and I'm really glad. If watching things nonspoiled is your thing, I think you will enjoy having that experience.

Which means you will not want to click on the cut tag, because ALL THE SPOILERS are here.

All the spoilers )
sholio: heart in a cup of tea (Heart)
There is an MCU commentfic kissing fest being hosted by [personal profile] such_heights - leave prompts for kisses, or answer prompts, or both! :) I'm hoping for more Agent Carter and Daredevil prompts in the mix, since that's mostly what I'm feeling inspired to write.

Although, so far, the only fill I've written is this post-AoU one here, which contains AoU characters and is basically gen. I'm going to try to write a couple more. And I've left a TON of prompts.

Behind the cut - a few thoughts on finishing up the Bucky & Sam fic after having seen Age of Ultron, with spoilers.

Age of Ultron spoilers )
sholio: sun on winter trees (Default)
Here's a little grab bag of some extra stuff that goes with the fic I just posted.

First of all, for the last chapter I was trying to figure out what the generator room of a secret underground HYDRA base would actually look like (seriously, I swear THE big source of delays on the last couple of chapters was trying to figure out how a secret underground bad guy base would be constructed, probably in more detail than actual TV show/movie show writers generally do) and I came across this really cool page on the power station at the Amundsen-Scott base at the South Pole. At least, I thought it was interesting! I started out patterning the HYDRA power plant after this one, although as you'll notice if you read the story, it ended up taking a somewhat different turn.

Second - the fic actually started out very different. I started writing it for a prompt at [livejournal.com profile] avengersgen last May, for Sam getting Bucky out of trouble. Originally I had imagined it as some kind of "5 Times Sam Saved Bucky" fic, or something along those lines, but I wrote this little tossed-off bit about Sam catching Bucky after he fell out of a plane, and then I thought "OKAY ACTUALLY I WANT TO WRITE THAT FIC", and then 32K words of fic happened. XD But I did actually start writing the other one. So here's about 800 words of the fic it almost was, but didn't turn out to be. It's still tempting to turn this into an actual fic, but I don't really have a plot, so mainly it's just some plotless speculating on how Sam and Bucky would work together in the field.

The unwritten Sam and Bucky fic from last May )

And that's as far as I ever got with that.

The other thing I wanted to post is something I just pasted into a comment over on the fic at AO3, and I thought, why not repost it here as well? I tend to write out of order, and one of the early scenes I wrote was a reunion scene that got cut because the plot went a different way. Deets under the cut so I don't spoil my own fic.

The cut reunion scene, with context - this would've been near the end of Chapter 4 )

I also have some thoughts about how this story was or wasn't jossed by Age of Ultron, but I'll put those in a separate post so people who are avoiding spoilers won't be spoiled.
sholio: sun on winter trees (Default)
There are two things I wanted to talk about in more depth, one thing I liked and one I did not.

The happy thing )

The nonsquee part )
sholio: sun on winter trees (Default)
No spoilers outside the cut! Thank you, Internet, for keeping me ... well, as unspoiled as I was, but people were generally pretty good about it. :)
