Highlander! I'm done!
I am done with season 6! (Well, for certain values of "done".) Which means you don't have to deal with Psycho Spoiler Lady anymore, and I'm sure we're all glad of that. *g*
I watched the first four eps of the season, and then the ones selected on this poll. I'll go back and watch the others at my leisure -- it's nice to have a few unseen eps to look forward to! -- but I figure I've pretty much seen the good stuff at this point, so I'm not terribly worried about spoilers and such. No, really. I mean it this time.
Anyway -- season 6!
That ... was an extremely anticlimactic Armageddon. I like the general idea -- defeating the enemy by not fighting him -- but the execution ... meh. There was some really neat stuff with Joe, and with Duncan and Joe, but I ended up frustrated that a lot of the demon's potential was squandered; for a being as powerful and evil as it appeared to be, it certainly couldn't pull off an evil plan to save its life.
"Sins of the Fathers" was a fun episode, though I missed the ensemble (what, not even one of Duncan's recurring friends in this one?). I loved the turnabout of expectation in this episode, with the supposed bad guys turning out to be the good guys and vice versa. I like Alex Raven a lot (I am such a sucker for secretly sweet bad girls/guys), and she and Max are neat together; she and Duncan are fun, too. I'm glad Duncan's made a new friend. (Though I peeked at IMDB and saw she wasn't in any more episodes; that's too bad. I like to think she keeps turning up in Duncan's life later on, though, as his Immortal friends tend to do.)
Duncan's shift in persona this season is so fascinating, especially since it's built slowly over the last couple of seasons. I'm really intrigued to see him lay down the sword and try not to play the judge-jury-executioner role anymore. Again, I really love how nothing is static on this show -- things change, people change, and the echoes of last season are still being felt.
"Unusual Suspects" - hahahahahaha, oh, show. "I loved him like a butler! ... uh, a brother!" made me laugh so hard I had to stop the DVD for a minute. And Fitz falling down the stairs in a suit of armor, and Duncan's "oh for pete's sake, I'M REALLY GONNA KILL HIM THIS TIME" expression -- *snorfls* Oh Fitz. You can come back anytime.
"Indiscretions" - eeeeee, JOE AND METHOS ROAD TRIP OF AWESOME. Okay, that episode rocked EVERYTHING. I can see why it topped the poll. *squee* They're just ... adorable. I love how Methos is completely, obviously playing Joe to get the truth out of him (come on, Joe, obvious Methos is obvious) but Joe eventually does the right thing -- and Methos came along anyway, even knowing it was a trap.
And now ... series finale!
"To Be" and "Not To Be" - OH SHOW. OH SHOW, SHOW, SHOWWWWWW. ♥ ♥ ♥ HEARTS. HEARTS IN MY EYES.
I don't know if I'd quite go so far as to say that was my favorite series finale of anything ever -- but, damn, it's right up there. It was just such an amazing love letter to the characters, to the show, to the fans. That is the kind of series finale that you get from a show when the writers and producers and everyone who works on the show are every bit as invested in the show as any single creator of a book ever was -- or any fan ever was. It's just ... HEARTS. IN MY EYES.
And this is one of the reasons why I love so much being unspoiled for things (thank you, flist, for not spoiling me for this! ♥). Because I was terrified going into this that they were going to kill characters. This show does, after all. Actually, given the way the episode began, I couldn't think of any way they were going to fill another hour and a half EXCEPT by killing characters and then having Duncan have to come back from it. I watched the first fifteen or twenty minutes of the episode with my hand clamped over my mouth, making little squeaky noises and occasionally whimpering "Don't die!"
And then! AND THEN! AN HOUR AND A HALF OF PURE DISTILLED AWESOME! Character moments? This was a nonstop montage of character moments. I don't think there was a single part of it I didn't love. Oh, who cares if they were ripping off "It's a Wonderful Life". Everybody does anyway, and I don't care because ... CANON DYSTOPIC AU! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH and I never dreamed we'd actually get one on the show. (And FIIIIIITZ!) And it was all woven together with Duncan, and what his friends mean to him and what he means to them. The "Stand By Me" scene with Joe made me cry. The Tessa parts made me cry -- not just because of Duncan (oh Duncan) but also because her personal dystopia was so ... common, so everyday. While everyone else was having spectacular meltdowns of EVIL, Tessa's life was just quietly empty and unhappy, because she traded beauty and passion for safety and security. The rest of it ... ahahahaha, AWESOME (in a vaguely heartbreaking yet heartwarming kind of way). I love how they put so much thought into figuring out how everyone's lives would have gone wrong in different, vaguely plausible ways. I don't care if it's sappy and over-the-top, because of the aforementioned AWESOME. (Plus, the actors all got to play alt-versions of themselves, which is always fun for everyone. Well, Horton and Kronos are evil in any universe; that's a given. *g* But it was fun to see them again.)
And then, after everything, after everyone is safe (YAY FOR EVERYONE BEING SAFE), there's that gorgeous montage of the Highlands and all the past seasons -- the people he's known and loved and lost and sometimes kept, the places he's been, the things he's done. And those little moments where he finally, finally tells Methos and Joe and Amanda what they mean to him. Yes, all of this made me cry too, and I'm not really a crying-at-TV-shows kind of person! In fact, it's making me tear up again just thinking about it.
OH SHOW. ♥ LOVE LETTER, YOU GUYS. TOTAL LOVE LETTER. This, this is how you end a show. This is how you pay back your viewers for six seasons of investing themselves in your characters. THIS RIGHT HERE. I really can't tell you how much I was, in some ways, dreading the finale because I was so afraid it was going to leave me sad and depressed. Instead I'm full of warm fuzzy love for the show and the characters and everybody who worked on this. Dear show: I forgive you for killing Richie, because this? TOTAL LOVE LETTER. ♥
Okay - I am READY for fanstuff recs! I'm most interested in vids right now, actually - know any good ones? As far as fic goes, I will read any pairing, but I'm mostly interested in ensemble gen or mostly-gen stories: action, plotty stuff, character pieces, episode tags? Where are the archives, the rec lists, and so on and so forth? Guide me, please!
I'm not *that* interested in the Duncan/Methos pairing right now, not because I hate the idea but rather because I suspect that's the vast majority of what's out there, and I'd like to start my time in the fandom with a wider sampling. I'm also not that interested in AUs quite yet. But, seriously, if you have some brilliant fanworks in either one of these categories, don't let this stop you from reccing them (especially if it's an ensemble story with a little Duncan/Methos in the background; I'd be all over that -- or Duncan/Methos/Amanda, OMG, *want*). I mean, even if you rec me something I'm not quite ready for, I can always come back later, right?

But, yeah. Fitz and dystopias and "Goodbye my friend" and just. Eeeeeeee~~!
"Indiscretions" is fabulous because it's the Joe & Methos show, and would that it had actually been produced (I don't know if you were aware but much of s6 was them trying to develop a conceivable spin-off show - it's why they kept introducing new chars. They finally went ahead with HL: Raven starring Amanda, which I've never actually seen because even though I love Amanda, her without Duncan or Methos just made me sad there was no more HL...)
And "Unusual Suspects" was the first ep I actually got on tape, so one of the ones I've seen the most. Also the first time we saw Fitz - actually we didn't know he was a recurring char until later. Still loved the ep, it's just such ridiculous fun.)(as a side note, I was never very familiar with The Who, so didn't know who Roger Daltrey was when we saw HL; and to this day any time I see any special with The Who (or a rerun of Tommy), I can only think, Oh, there you are, Fitz!)
So in conclusion, yes, squeee~~!
Don't have much in the way of recs, but here's Pentapus's Methos recs post (http://pentapus.livejournal.com/144554.html) (and she's not a Duncan/Methos fan). One on here that I'd read a long time before, just reread now when I found the post and it still holds up - stellar characterizations and a fascinatingly creepy and a bit gruesome story: Metempsychosis (http://www.dementia.org/~jacquez/writing/hlfic/metempsychosis.html).

And Indiscretions, yeah ... so much fun! Someone else had mentioned in comments that they were trying out ideas for spinoffs. (The Joe and Methos show would have been SO WONDERFUL.) I actually have the Raven DVDs; they came as an extra thing with my HL boxed set of the series (I wasn't even expecting it!), so I'm sure I'll get around to watching them at some point, but right now I just want to wallow in sheer LOVE for the show and characters and all.
I've listened to The Who for a long time, but they were never a band I really had bothered watching in concert much, so, yeah, Roger Daltrey is now Fitz in my head. Which I'm sure is going to make watching Who clips interesting. Hee! (What's really hilarious, given the HL universe, is that he could actually BE Fitz! Sort of. Fitz with really good makeup as a young man, I guess ...)
And thank you so much for the recs! I will check them out, though I think I'm not quite in a fanfic place for this show yet; it was not the kind of finale that made me want to rush out and read fic, but rather the kind that made me want to wallow in canon for a while yet. Heh ... I've already been poking through Pentapus's Methos art posts and realizing that I've seen most of them already, since they're generally multifannish and I'm a long-time lurker on her journal. I remember these posts ... I just had absolutely no idea who Methos was (nor did I care ... then! XD).
Have fun in Japan~! ♥

but anyway i little envy you. so much fresh impressions, so much emotions.
"To Be" and "Not To Be" a lot to worry, melancholy and joy at once. "Indiscretions" - off comments! ))) "Unusual Suspects" - OMG! i totally forgot about it. shame me. adorable comedy! i liked it verrrrrrry much.
for the rest of this season (spoilers! spoilers!) most of episodes will be about spin off girls (like alex raven) and too little duncan and others. "Two of Hearts" - even without any of 'our guys'. maybe only "Black Tower" is only duncan's story among them.
so maybe it's really time to read some of funfictions. *wink*. my first autor was Mc Georg. maybe if it wasn't her deep thoughts about everything i'd never read more of this staff at all. her page here: http://www.wordsmiths.net/MacGeorge/index.html
very good old archive here: http://www.seventh-dimension.org/Author_Main.html there are a lot of all (including MacGeorge's stories also). and there easy selection by characters or by autors or by story name.
and very good latest archive http://hlfiction.net/authors.php?list=authors
enjoy!

Also, they totally should have spun off the Methos and Joe show. Pure awesome.

And, yeah, Methos and Joe are such a delight.

Indiscretions is so much fun, because we get to see Methos and Joe fix that friendship that's been weathering hard times. It's awesome. I love the way Methos looks when he and Joe click glasses at the very end of the episode, and the way Joe is looking at him, kind of trying to figure him out, as always, but at the same time _understanding_ him.
I loved TB/NTB myself, and yes, the love letter! ♥ I love the scene between Methos and Duncan: "It doesn't matter what I say does it! ....Goodbye...(Don't you mean goodluck?) Of course that's what I meant." It was just an amazing moment, made better by Methos being unable to let them all die, and charging in like a hero on a white (but not pale) horse.
I love that we have so much STUFF in this show, that you can plausibly write ANY kind of fic in it and be ok. Sci-fi set in the future -- no problem, they live forever. Horror/fantasy = Arhiman. History = Obvious! AU = yes please.
Anything is possible in this universe and I LOVE that.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this series. You've really made me come back and re-experience it all as though watching anew. HL has a huge place in my heart and it's so much fun to discuss it with others.

Indiscretions was such a wonderful episode. And the finale! ♥ The moment when Methos shows up to save the day at the last possible minute (yeah, sure you don't care, Methos) is one of my favorite single moments in the whole series. Last-minute rescue FTW!

I'm so glad! ♥ I've really loved it - I don't know if it's just because I started watching HL at a time when I really needed a new fandom, but I think I've fallen for it harder than I've fallen for almost anything since SGA stole my heart back in 2006.

Unusual Suspects (despite the screaming woman--my poor, poor ears, whenever I forgot and the sound was up) is one of my favorite episodes.
Now that you've seen the series, I highly recommend that you never--under any circumstances--watch Highlander: The Source. Or if you're curious, just watch Spoony's review, as he goes over the edge into madness in the course of it. I can link you to it, if you're interested.

I thought it was impossible for The Source to be as bad as people said. Boy, was I wrong. It's _worse_.

One of the things I had to sit on my hands about was Indiscretions when we were talking about Methos earlier. In the scene when he kills Walker, he pulls his head back with a fistful of hair, and tells him, "Just because I don't like to fight doesn't mean I can't." That is so much a part of Methos and explains a lot about him.
In earlier episodes (pre-Horsemen and killing of Silas) I got the underlying impression that Duncan thought Methos might be a bit of a wimp because he didn't like to fight and actually made steps to stay away from Immortals. I thought Joe felt the same way.
For instance, in Valkyre when he runs off and says he gets shy when new immortals appear. He gets this kind of look from Duncan and Joe gives him this 'okay, for God's sake' world weary sign when Methos insists Joe leave with him.
At the beginning of CAH when Duncan feels Kronos and Methos immediately leaves, Duncan appears a bit frustrated that Methos first inclination is to run. When Joe is defending Methos in the bar (when Duncan initially asks if Joe knows anything or has seen Methos) Joe mentions that Methos is the one immortal who stays away from fighting.
In any case, I think Duncan, Joe and the fans both had to do a bit of discovery where Methos is concerned. And this fits into what we learned about the Methos in CAH and REV. He isn't a coward, He isn't scared to fight. It has something to do with survival, sure. Odds are against you if you continue to fight every immortal who comes along. But it's more than that. There's something bloodthirsy inside of Methos still. And I think he works very hard to keep that part of him at bay.
He doesn't like to fight, but that doesn't mean he can't. It summed him up nicely.
no subject
On everything else I completely agree!
I actually read more into MacLeod's look when he sees Methos running for the sword that he dropped when Silas swings his axe at him. That's the first time he sees Methos actually fight for his life. They've sparred before and I'm sure MacLeod was confident he could beat him on skill, but seeing Methos with a sword vs axe must have changed his perseptions similar to how it changed mine when I first saw it.

"I'm easily amused" Oh Methos, you evil wonderful boy! ^_^
And yes, the finale, on the wonderful wonderful finale. As you say, it really was a gift to the fans! I love that they even got the actress who played Tess back. And all the wonderful ways that Duncan made all of their lives better. And oh, Fitz!
As neechan mentioned, that finale montage, oh boy did I watch that a LOT. Sooo much! It was on the same tape, right before (or right after) the wonderful ep of Sentinel (not sure you ever saw that show) that had thought dead and mouth to mouth and I used to rewind and fastforward watching the HL finale and that scene, over and over again...ehehehe I may have issues ^_-
no subject
And the finale was just ... OH SHOW. ♥ ♥ ♥ One of the best finales of anything ever, in my quite unbiased opinion. I haven't been able to watch the montage again all the way through because it keeps making me cry! But in a good way.

Oh yes, I remember that show, and that episode. :D Sentinel never sucked me into the fandom because it was just too much -- I like h/c as much as the next girl, but even the show was a bit much for me, never mind the fic. XD But, yeah, I remember that ep from when the show was originally running on TV; it must have made quite an impression. Actually, I think I might still have it on one of my old VHS tapes around here somewhere. ETA: Actually, come to think of it, when I watched "Revelations 6:8" for the first time, the double Quickening reminded me of that scene a lot. XD

Does that mean, I can friend you now? Although if you're still scared by all these new people, if you don't want to. I'll not be mad.
No recs from me yet, as I am a Duncan/Methos girl through and through (they were the guys with and through who I discovered slash :D), but I have some old Duncan/Amanda/Methos stuff floating around and maybe some gen stuff somewhere. I'll look into it when I get home.

I've read a bit of Duncan/Methos/Amanda thus far and I love it just as much as I thought I would, so if you have any recs of that nature, I would be all over that in a heartbeat. :D

I've already discovered the recs at crack_van and have been browsing through them with glee. :D (And yeah, I found the Wal-Mart story as well - HEEEEEEE~!) The rest of the links are most appreciated - I feel like I'm swimming in a glorious sea of good HL fic. So much fic! So little time!
no subject
But the big thing she wrote is the Aidan series which is goodness knows how many hundreds of thousands of words long over all its parts and involves loads of canon characters as well as a pile of OCs that I really wish had been canon because I adore them so (and a really nasty set of original villains too). The individual sections do vary in interest and importance to the plot (some are pretty much PWP) but they are all well written and entertaining, and the real arc starts in the Line War set - I actually started with the first of that and went and read the previous fics later. What I really want to rec you is the last fic in the series, Sirocco, because it is exactly what you asked for with 'action, plotty stuff, character pieces' and brilliant, but you won't know who any of the OCs are without reading the rest! And Duncan/Methos is a large component, but that is by no means the only relationship that gets focused on.

The characters might be a little OOC from time to time but I still like it. A little warning, the author passed away some years ago so the 6th story mentioned at the end of 'Terms of Engagement' was never posted.
And there's the 7th Demension Highlander Fanfic archive.

There hasn't been a story update since 2007 but there are tons of fics.

I also have *goes to check* 325 of my favourite highlander fics bookmarked and (fairly obsessively) tagged at delicious http://www.delicious.com/fractured_sun/highlander
Just click on the relevant tag to narrow it down by characters genres or length. As you asked specifically for gen my gen highlander links are: http://www.delicious.com/fractured_sun/highlander+gen

All the Ladies of the World (http://valoise.livejournal.com/25026.html)
Threesome (http://valoise.livejournal.com/21828.html)
There's more on my YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/varmstro2) but these three are probably my favorites

You may have already read these or had them rec’d to you, but based on the kind of H/C you said you like (in that other post), there are a couple fics I can suggest.
Sandra McDonald’s Methos in WWII series. IIRC they’re fairly H/C heavy, particularly the third instalment. Unfortunately the only links I have to them are broken, but they can still be found via the wayback machine.
The Wars We Chose to Fight - http://web.archive.org/web/20080214225428/http://www.xmission.com/~ladyslvr/mcdonald/wars.html
The Battles We Lose - http://web.archive.org/web/20080214225052/http://www.xmission.com/~ladyslvr/mcdonald/battles.html
The Victories We Claim - http://web.archive.org/web/20080829112435/http://www.xmission.com/~ladyslvr/mcdonald/victory.html
Then there’s Snow Leopard’s Armed Interventions Series - "Worried about Methos' erratic behaviour, Joe investigates the Old Man's whereabouts during the Ahriman crisis-and finds out far more than he feared."
First one is here:

The rest are on her FF.Net page and/or on her webpage, here:
http://thesnowleopard.net/arch2.html
Lastly there’s Hunted by Melodious - "Methos is being hunted and is having some adverse reactions to the many quickenings. And he doesn't want MacLeod to know."
I haven't read this in a long time, but I seem to recall it being Methos/Duncan but mostly focused on Methos and Joe.

Sorry about the long links, I’m a bit of an LJ noob, so I don’t know how you re-name them…
