I realized I've only been talking about this show on Tumblr and haven't made a proper post about it here yet! [personal profile] aqwt101 recced to to me last year. I bounced off the first couple of episodes the first time I tried, because it's very little-kiddish at first (although visually beautiful), but it turns out to be SO GOOD by the end. Like [personal profile] aqwt101 said, by season 3 it doesn't even feel like a kid's show at all.

What is it? 3-season CGI animated show on Netflix, produced by Guillermo del Toro, now complete but the first in a trilogy of 3 different shows set in the same town and sharing some of the same characters. Therefore, it has an ending, but leaves a lot of loose ends for the next show to pick up.

What's it about? It is, in the beginning at least, a "team of plucky kids vs. monsters" action/quest show. A secret (and gorgeously animated) world of trolls exists underground, side by side with the human world. The protagonist, Jim, is a high school student who picks up a magic amulet that turns him into the Trollhunter, who is the trolls' Chosen One. A human has never done it before and no one (least of all Jim) knows how to deal with having a human as their warrior-avatar. His mission is to hunt down threats to the troll world, while trying to hide his secret second life from his mom/teachers/etc, with the help of his friends. Eventually an ever wider pool of characters get involved.

Why is it awesome/why might I want to try it? I posted a list of enticements on Tumblr, which I'll just replicate here:
• Gorgeous CGI animation.
• Excellent voice acting (including, among others, Kelsey Grammar, Mark Hamill, Anton Yelchin, Anjelica Huston, Clancy Brown, and Tatiana Maslany)
• With Guillermo del Toro involved, you may expect that "monsters are people too"/"everyone deserves love no matter how monstrous" is going to be a major theme, and it definitely is.
• A bilingual Latina heroine played by a Latina voice actress
• Villain redemption arcs. So many villain redemption arcs. Nicely layered characters in general.
• Badass female characters (who admittedly don’t get to badass much in the first few episodes, but this part gets much better later on)
• No love triangles! (There are a few passing hints in that direction, but it never really develops as more than mild jealousy for an episode.)
• Characters named things like AAARGGGHH!! and NotEnrique (because he's definitely not Enrique. It makes sense in context).
• Flesh-eating garden gnomes.
• The humor is really, genuinely funny (for the most part) and sometimes very dark. Some of the episodes are flat-out hilarious. And then it'll do a sudden 180 turn into angst and heartfelt feels.
• Surprisingly dark plots involving things like mind control, genuinely creepy spirit-world stuff, and character deaths.
• Cool worldbuilding and good plotting.

Basically it’s a really cool show that turned out to be way more awesome than I thought it was going to be from the standard-kids-show tone of the first couple episodes. The character interactions are wonderful and I love how even the villains' storylines are layered and interesting. It started to remind me a lot of Gargoyles as it went along.

What might turn me off? Some of the show's humor relies on stereotyping more than I'd like. Details under cut: Slight spoilers, mostly cutting for those who don't want squee spoiled )

Anything else? Come watch it so we can talk about! I also requested it in fandom-stocking and other people who request it might get treats from me.

No spoilers in comments, please! A spoilery discussion post is forthcoming.

Not gonna lie, I have hopes of dragging other people into this fandom hell sweet iddy show with me if I can, especially since this is probably going to be my playground for indulgent h/c for the next little while. (I've already written quite a bit, and there's more on the way ...)

The problem with Iron Fist (well, one of them) is that it's hard to rec because a lot of people bounce off the first season, and bounce hard. The second season is tighter, better written, does a much better job with Chinatown, and fixes basically everything that was an issue in season one. Unfortunately there's a lot in season one that sets up the character relationships in season two. And some people really do love season one! (I did, with some caveats.) So basically I'd recommend trying season one, and if you find yourself bouncing off but still want to try to get to the good stuff (and there is a lot of good stuff!), you can:

- Watch 1x01 and 1x12-1x13, which will establish the major characters and relationships in S2.
- Skip straight to 2x01. You'll miss some setup, but you can always go back and watch later.
- Watch season one while FF'ing through everything to do with ninjas, China, or kung fu. This was pretty much what I did in the early eps, before getting completely hooked by season's end.

The reason why it's worth it, and the reason why this ended up being my favorite of the four main Defendersverse shows (leaving aside Punisher, which I also adore and is kind of its own thing) is because this show is just so goddamn optimistic about people, and this universe (theirs or ours, frankly) could use some optimism. This is a show about family and love and connection and belonging, and characters actively seeking out those things and learning to build healthy supportive relationships with each other even when they come from terribly abusive/lonely/damaged backgrounds and screw up a lot along the way.

I think people who bounced off of, or noped out on, the other Netflix MCU shows because of the violence, grittiness, or darkness might like this one better. It's a lot more escapist, lighter, and more optimistic. The first season is essentially an off-its-rocker soap opera with ninjas; the second season is more tightly plotted, less batshit, and pays off on a lot of the character setup in really satisfying ways.

It also has some darn good canon hurt/comfort.

And yeah, it's cancelled now, which means (leaving aside the possibility of a revival or the characters turning up in other Netflix shows) two seasons is all there is, and unlike a lot of shows I've loved and lost along the way, it doesn't end on a forever cliffhanger. It's got a very solid ending that wraps up the character arcs in a satisfying way and, while clearly designed as a tease for season three, doesn't feel unfinished, but more like a springboard for further adventures. Unlike the other Netflix Marvel shows, it doesn't tear things down in season two; it builds things up and leaves the characters better than they were before.

There's a list of enticements under the cut - these are mildly spoilery, but just in the general sense of where things are headed that may not be apparent from early season one, rather than specifics.

Enticements! )

Viewing order:

Because this show is part of the Defendersverse shows and the characters pop up all over, here is the order in which the IF-related shows take place:

1. Iron Fist season one
2. Defenders (includes a lot of Danny & Colleen, and sets up Iron Fist season 2)
3. Luke Cage season 2 - not a must-watch for IF purposes, but includes IF crossover characters in 2 episodes, and also provides setup/background for Misty, who is one of the major IF characters in season 2. The Iron Fist crossover eps are 2x03 (Misty & Colleen) and 2x10 (Danny & Luke).
4. Iron Fist season two

I think you can probably get away with just watching IF 1 & 2 without watching the other shows, but I was glad that I watched Defenders and most of Luke Cage in between; it does help a lot with character setup and generally understanding their universe better.

Basically I love this sweet, charming, well-intentioned kung fu soap opera and I want to be able to share it with other people! I'm requesting/offering it for Yuletide, plan to request/offer for Festivids, and will probably have it as one of my perennial exchange fandoms for awhile, which means that if you like this show and you like my writing, the odds of getting fic from me are very high. :D

Note: I know this show may not be for a lot of people. That's totally fine! I don't mind at all if you don't like it, don't want to watch it, or find it severely problematic. I would prefer not getting comments just to tell me that, though.

ETA: I also realized I should add a list of potentially triggery/squee-harshing stuff (contains some spoilers). Set off a bit so it can be skipped if desired.

No spoilers past mid season three, please! I'm not caught up yet!

So here's the other thing that's eaten my heart/brain/soul over the last week or two: Dark Matter

dark_matter_cast

What is it? It's a 3-season Syfy spaceship show, by some of the same people who did Stargate. All of it is streaming on Netflix.

What's it about? Six people -- seven counting the ship's android -- wake up on a spaceship without their memories. Evidence suggests one of them is a traitor. Further evidence suggests they're part of a galactic conflict they can't even remember. They have to figure out who they are and who they can trust before their pasts catch up with them. Basically this turns into found-family on a spaceship, as it does. (Also, to make it less confusing if I end up making more posts about this show, most of the main characters have numbers for names, because they don't know their real names for awhile and adopt numbers as shorthand.)

Why is it awesome/why might I want to try it? FOUND FAMILY ON A SPACESHIP. I've really missed having a spaceship show in my life, and this one hits my team-love buttons like few things have since Stargate.

It’s got femslash, slash, and het potential. It’s got a ton of interesting character relationships, including kid-mentor ones and sometimes-enemies learning to trust each other (”Stop saving my life. … Now you’re just doing it on purpose”) and a relationship that’s a lot like Janeway/Seven of Nine in which one is a woman of color. It’s got canon h/c and teaminess and all the sci-fi tropes (e.g. the characters meet their evil alternate universe doubles, trapped on a prison world, taken over by mind-control goo, on a spaceship fulla zombies, time loops, etc). It has redemption arcs and snark and themes about the meaning of life/what it means to have a soul and characters running around doing action stuff in long coats and leather jackets while rock music plays in the background. It's got several Stargate actors in recurring roles, including David Hewlett playing a character who is basically Rodney McKay as a seedy fixer, and Evil Elizabeth Weir.

It has a female Asian captain, a cast that (depending on the cast makeup from season to season) is frequently at least half female and less than half white, and multiple recurring female villains for your foe-yay needs. Plus a number of different characters being incredibly hot in black leather, and actually some pretty cool sci-fi worldbuilding, such as travel-via-cloning in which instantaneous intergalactic travel is accomplished by animating a disposable clone of yourself in a different location, and a galactic milieu with a higher-than-I'm-used-to level of background multiculturalism; they really do a pretty good job of making this feel like a plausible hundreds-of-years-in-the-future Earth-colonized galaxy, at least I think so.

It also contains an episode that has managed to make the coveted "[personal profile] sholio's All-Time Favorite H/C Episodes" list. :D (Er, this list does not exist in reality. But now I think it's a list I should make. And post.)

What might turn me off? There are some questionable writing/casting choices (my least favorite of these is that one of the main characters is basically Space Samurai from Space Samurai Planet, and he doesn't really have a whole lot of characterization other than that). In general, since it's by the same people who did SGA and Stargate Universe, it unsurprisingly shares some writing weaknesses with earlier Stargate shows. I'm watching it with my husband and I get the impression that the handwavy science and occasionally WTF plot resolutions are driving him crazy on a regular basis. I personally could not care less because I am there for FOUND FAMILY IN SPACE, but ymmv.

Also, it got unexpectedly cancelled after season three. I suspect (though I don't know for sure, since I'm not there yet) that it's going to end on a forever-unresolved cliffhanger.

Anything else? Based on what I remember from the last time I posted about Dark Matter when I watched the first season, there are people following me who dislike Three. Which is fine, but keep that to yourself around here, please, because Three is AWESOME and no one can tell me different. :D (Although it's tough to pick a real favorite; as of season three, I think the entire cast is my favorite. It's one of those shows.)

ETA: If you haven't watched the show, beware of spoilers up to early season three in the comments!
sholio: Jack-o-lanterns (Halloween-jack-o-lanterns)
I've gotten into a couple of new shows in the last month or so, and since I'm making another stab at getting back on DW for awhile, I thought maybe I'd open up by telling you what I'm into these days and why they're awesome so you can try them too, if you want. :D

First of all: Stranger Things

What is it? It's an 8-episode miniseries on Netflix, a period horror/suspense show set in 1983. The first season aired last year as a self-contained miniseries - there's a sequel hook at the very end, but otherwise it wraps up all its storylines in a satisfying way - and it got renewed, so there will be a new 8-episode season dropping on Oct. 27. TWO WEEKS!!!

What's it about? It's obviously inspired by Stephen King, ET, and kid/teen movies of the 1980s in general. The basic concept is Plucky Kids Fight Monsters. There are three different sets of characters - the little kids, the teenagers, and the adults, each of whom have their own storyline as they separately investigate different aspects of creepy goings-on in small-town Indiana in 1983, picking up different pieces of the puzzle that finally come together at the end.

Why is it awesome/why might I want to try it? If you're in a mood for 80s nostalgia, the period feeling is basically perfect, from the clothes and hairstyles to the music and even the camera angles. It's such a good period show that I kept trying to calculate how old the actors were in the modern day and then going "Wait, no, this show was filmed last year!"

But even if you couldn't care less about period nostalgia, it's a very solidly written show with fantastic child actors, well-constructed storylines full of twists, A+ use of All The Tropes (from eerie psychic kids to mysterious top-secret government facilities to creepy supernatural things happening with ordinary household appliances). I loved the characters, and there's a very shippable OT3.

Plus Winona Ryder's in it.

What might turn me off? Well, demographically speaking, it's very true to the source material, which is to say - mostly white cast, all het romances, etc. (The OT3 isn't canon, alas.) There's also the fact that it's horror, although it's not extreme horror. The level of gore/creepiness is similar to Supernatural, so if you can handle that, you can probably handle this.

Anything else? NEW SEASON! OCTOBER 27! THEY'RE GOING TO KILL ALL MY BABIES AND BREAK UP MY SHIPS AND I WILL DIE!! Okay, hopefully not.

There's also a really cute and addictive phone game with adorable retro graphics (similar to a 1980s run-and-jump-on-things arcade game, e.g. Legend of Zelda or old-school Mario).
sholio: (Scrubs-Carla)
Well, Leverage is on temporary hold right now, because Being Human ate my soul. OMG, f'list! Is anyone watching this? Because you all have to run out and get hold of it right now! It's a British series, apparently very obscure (I think there's one(?) person on my f'list who posts about it); its first series (6 episodes) just finished up, and apparently there's a second series coming next year. Only six episodes! It's not much of a viewing commitment!

And omg omg omg, this show ...! Okay, it has its WTF moments and one particularly awful special effect that makes me cringe every time they do it (maybe they'll have enough budget next year to do it better, because it utterly breaks the mood when they're trying for serious and angsty and then bring out the impossibly cheesy f/x) -- but all in all, I give it five out of five pineapples on the Psych scale of total character adorability. XD I was only going to watch episode 3 this morning, but ended up spending the whole day mainlining the rest of the series. I couldn't stop!

The basic premise is that a vampire, a ghost and a werewolf rent an apartment in Bristol together. (Well, the vampire and the werewolf rent the apartment; the ghost was already haunting it when they moved in.) It sounds like the pilot for a truly awful sitcom, but instead it's done with a wonderful mixture of humor and angst and compelling character arcs for all three characters -- in just six episodes! I kept having to pause playback so that I could squee and flail (or, as [livejournal.com profile] greyias says, "squail") -- I believe there was literal flailing at some points. This show mashes all my buttons for "found family" and dorkily adorable characters and broken people finding comfort in each other and (mostly) platonic boy/girl BFFs -- plus a fairly complex overall story arc (though it feels a bit rushed or oddly paced at times, as there are only 6 episodes).

(FYI, if you do go looking for it, there is a sort of "episode 0" -- the original pilot -- which has an almost completely different cast. Do not watch this first, because they change most of the actors and it's really, really disconcerting. There's nothing in it that you have to see in order to understand the rest of the show; you can pick up just fine with 1x01 and carry on from there. I haven't actually watched "episode 0" all the way through yet; I started with 1x01, then went back and tried to watch it, and having other actors in the roles instead of my adorable dorks was too weird.)

I haven't had another serious fan-addiction in the two years that I've been in SGA fandom. I've realized this because I'm currently in the middle of a full-blown, reading-every-fanfic, brain-swamped-with-plotbunnies Life on Mars addiction. No worries, I really don't see myself dropping out of the SGA fandom. I have too many stories to finish (including my Big Bang one with [livejournal.com profile] naye), and too much love, time and friendship invested in the fandom to just walk away; besides which, even if I do get a bit apathetic for a while, I have no doubt that Season 5 will refresh my interest. However, if I'm a bit scarce in SGA-land for a little while, it's because my brain has been taken over by the boys (and girls) of A-Division.

I'm also learning to use del.icio.us, since the launch into a new fandom seemed like a good time to explore its features. (The idea of trying to bookmark all the SGA fic I've read and enjoyed makes my brain explode -- there are 900 stories in my SGA fanfic stories folder on my hard drive, and those are just the ones I felt were good enough that I wanted to save them in case they ever disappeared off the Internet!) Anyway, the only thing that's given me a little trouble so far is that I'm so used to comma-delimited tags in LJ that I keep trying to separate my tags with commas and ending up with duplicate tags with commas on the end. Luckily that's easy to fix. My del.icio.us username is, of course, friendshipper if you want to watch me flail around trying to find a tagging system that makes it easy for me to go back and find stuff.

Also, a vid rec!

Devotion by [livejournal.com profile] cherryice
This is a stunningly gorgeous vid to "Devotion" by Tracy Chapman - season 1 footage, no major spoilers that I noticed. For me, at least, it does a really beautiful job of capturing the feeling of the series, of Sam's life and all of the characters' struggle to keep their soul and sanity intact in their violent world.
