We've been on something of a TV binge since the husband got through a big busy time at work (in the interests of giving him some brain down-time before the other end-of-semester busy time really gets rolling) so we've been getting caught up on various shows. I hadn't seen SGU since the mid-season hiatus, so we just marathoned a bunch of that yesterday ...

Random thoughts on SGU thru 2x17 - kinda mixed reactions )

sholio: (Catch-22)
For those who watched the SGU finale:

[Poll #1577465]

As far as dead goes, my serious money's on Telford (the Lucian guys basically lost interest after checking for a pulse, which makes me think he's dooooomed) and TJ's baby, because it just seems like something Stargate would do to remove a troublesome plot complication. Though I could be wrong about that last one, since I was pleasantly surprised with Teyla.

I'd kinda like to see the Lucians carry through on their threat to execute everyone in the cell, including Young, because a) I wouldn't miss Young at all, and b) it would be kind of awesome if the show wasn't just dangling the possibility as a random cliffhanger, but was actually willing to go there. I doubt it, though.

sholio: sun on winter trees (SGA-watch)
This ... started out as a post about what I'm watching these days and apparently turned into a sort of rant-ish thing about SGU, I guess. On the one hand, I like some of the things they've done with the last couple of episodes. On the other hand, as a viewer, I am a fickle and opinionated creature *g*, and I have issues, which I suppose largely come down to "this show is not tailored to ME, dammit!"

Spoilers through 1x15 )

OH HI, THIS GOT LONG. And opinion-y.

Long weekend and only three more weeks of classes before Christmas! I can't believe that school is kicking my ass this hard. I've been in the working world, for pete's sake! I've been a department head! And yet I'm paddling hard to keep my head above water. Though it doesn't help that I'm also working on a large freelance project at the same time.

Last week, I had [livejournal.com profile] derry667 visiting, and that was very awesome. We swam outdoors at -30F (in a hot springs), went to the North Pole (... it's a town), and marathoned our favorite SGA eps from any and all seasons. She posted some pictures here.

Derry also brought the series to date of SGU -- or, as my husband and I have begun calling it, Bastards in Space. We watched the first episode with Derry and then mainlined the rest of it after she was gone. It's so hilariously awful that we can't seem to stop. This isn't really spoilery but just in case you really, really don't want to hear about SGU )

What else? I finished my [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa story, and it's even beta'd; now I just need to get it polished up and submit it. I haven't started my Yuletide story yet, but I have some ideas. I also want to try to get my SGA fic site updated this weekend; I haven't put anything new on there in over a year. In fact, perhaps after I'm done typing this, I'll go work on that ...

ETA: Oh, and the new challenge at [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic is a Gift Challenge, and you know what this fandom could really use right now? Warm, fuzzy, holiday team-exchanging-gifts stories. You know you want to. :)

... so you can all defriend me at will ...

I'm really looking forward to Stargate: Universe.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still as enthusiastic about SGA as I ever was. In fact, this is totally crazy, but right now I feel like the cancellation news has revitalized my fannishness for the show. Over the last year or so I've been falling into a sort of fannish holding pattern - I got a little burned out on h/c, a little tired of the majority of the fic, got busy with other projects and wasn't particularly interested in finishing most of my WIPs. Working on the Big Bang fic with Naye helped a lot, but still, right now I'm more happy and excited about the show than I have been since my early days in the fandom.

And I, like the rest of you, find the entertainment industry's focus on newer/younger/prettier to be extremely vexing. It's not a new thing, of course - I can't even count how many shows have been cut down in their prime because they weren't sexy enough or "young" enough or pretty enough. But it's deeply frustrating, and gets ever more so for me the farther I get into the "over the hill" demographic.

But, you know what? So far, the Wright/Cooper creative team have been two-for-two at creating shows I've really loved, that totally brought the h/c and the teaminess and the humor and most of the other things I look for in a show. I have no idea if I'll be fannish about SGU, and I also have no doubt that it'll still have all the same problems that have plagued the Stargate franchise so far (colonialism, etc). But, given that I've loved everything else the creative team have done, I have absolutely no intention of rejecting this one sight-unseen. I plan to cling happily to casting and production news, and I'm looking forward to getting to know another ensemble cast of space explorers. It may suck utterly, just like anything else, but I'm not going to dismiss it out of hand until I actually watch it.

There, I said it. *g* (And, yes, I know I'm the person who whinged about Dollhouse just based on the promo and cast picture. Ha. Well, I never claimed to be consistent - and, heck, I'm probably going to end up watching that one eventually too, though in that case, I'm definitely waiting for fandom to vet it for me.)

Meanwhile, for all your SGA needs, [livejournal.com profile] naye has a huge screencap-filled squee-post for Shrine located over here.
