I stopped watching at ep 11 so I can't vote. Do you have a fav ep of the second half of S1? I was thinking of asking that so I could watch it and see if I liked it. I figured, if I don't like what was considered the 'best' ep of the second half, then I won't like the others and it's not worth paying the ~£20 to see them all ;)

It's all subjective though... I'll keep watching my SGA DVDs

Hmmmm ... There have been good bits in most of them -- it's definitely stronger than the first half -- but, if you don't mind some minor spoilers, here I talk about my problems with the show here (up to 1x15).

I did like Lost (1x15) and Subversion (1x18) probably more than the rest -- though the last one had Jack and Daniel, which probably helped. :D I'd say give "Lost" a try; it's got some nice off-the-ship action and good character bits.

Yes, I saw that when you first posted it. I don't mind about spoilers (wouldn't be here otherwise!)

I'll definitely give Subversion a try. For some reason it makes me think of submarines and Wraith queens... oh, that's Submersion :P

I picked Scott/Greer because it's the only pairing I actively *want* not because it's remotely likely to happen. More's the pity.

*laughs* Yeah, it's interesting that the pairing-up doesn't seem to involve couples who aren't straight, isn't it? I find it especially ... interesting that the first Stargate show with an openly gay character is also the first Stargate to have a fair amount of sex/romance in the plots -- in which she's not participating, because she's the only one of them who's permanently paired off. :/

I admit that my first thought when TJ was shot was "Oh my god, what a total cop-out." I guess we'll see if they're actually going to do it, but as much time as they've spent on the TJ/Young plot and TJ's angst about raising a baby on the ship, to have the problem conveniently removed by a third party smacks of narrative cheating to me. (On the other hand, if they kill the baby and TJ, I think I'd be much less annoyed. I don't really want her to die -- I used to like her, still like her sorta -- but it would at least feel like the writers weren't just handily writing out a problem by killing the baby while leaving the character alive and at least reasonably well. Also, it would save us from an episodes-long angst-a-thon.)

But how else would you know she's an alien? And evil? :D (Oh, Stargate. Not so much on the subtle.)

When I saw TJ apparently unconscious, I suspected before I even saw the blood: abdominal wound, baby dead. I do think TJ will pull through. They have three people in their favorite publicity photo: Young, Rush, and TJ. Those three will live. Much as I'd love to see Young buy it.

See, I don't really think so, because -- I'm being horribly cynical here, but unless there's a major example I'm overlooking, fandom just doesn't do white-guy/not-white-guy as a major slash pairing, even if they're the ones with the majority of the interaction in the show. I'd expect either Scott/Eli or Young/Rush, if Young doesn't die.

IMHO, Young only has some chemistry with Telford, so I'd vote for that (and they're both on the ship now! Even if possibly dead!).

The great pairing that never was and never will be but would have been really interesting for me? Chloe/Rush (I'll admit I'm Rush-biased, but) after the alien kidnapping, "you're the only one who knows what it's like" and stuff like that.

And now that I ponder it, that's twice Rush has managed to get himself captured by aliens and tortured, while the rest... not so much. Trend?

Heh, I could do without Young as well, so the idea of the Lucian takeover would be quite nifty. But then the only characters I'm interested in are Rush and Eli, really, so most could get the axe without affecting my already meager attachment. New Lucian guy seems to have been set up quite strongly in the last couple of episodes, so I'm thinking he'd stick around. And I did think "oh no, Stargate did not just kill the space baby just to snip that particular storyline!". I'll admit that it's a plot that actually irritated me, because seeing TJ pregnant while the rest of the crew was engaged in artfully-lit tantric sex all over the ship always made me think "why aren't they popping babies out left and right? Did they stop to stock up on birth control during their escape from the exploding planet? wtf?" but, baby! You can't promise me a baby and then expect me not to feel cheated if you don't deliver (/unintentional awful pun is awful)

Augh, yes, I agree -- both on removing the inconvenient story problem, and on TJ's pregnancy being a great whopping reminder that they must have chucked a jumbo-sized box of condoms through the Stargate while they were at it. (Which everyone is consistently using without problems, I guess. I just had a friend of mine get pregnant while correctly using reliable birth control, too, so good luck with that.)

If TJ's girth can be considered a reliable indicator of how long they've been on Destiny, we really should be seeing a lot more space babies by now!

Was it just me, or did Lucian guy seem an awful lot like that runner guy from the last season of SGA that Jennifer had some sparks with? Because I think my interest in him is a bit of a bleedover from that impression.

Yeah, I kept rooting for The Lucian Alliance, because SGU still hasn't really managed to make me like most of these people, and I can definitely see their point that Earth doesn't have more right to grab Ancient tech than they, and it could become a space pirates series.

*laughs* I like the idea of the Lucian Alliance stealing Destiny and becoming space pirates! Actually, aside from still having the problem that they're unable to go back, the setup of the series works wonderfully for a group of raiders/pirates -- they jump into a new system, steal anything that isn't nailed down, and jump out before anyone can stop them! And you could have a ton of adventures on the planets, running from local people and trying to get back to the ship ...

Actually, that would be infinitely more interesting, to me at least, than a show that's about people I mostly don't care for trying to get home.

Yeah, "Space Pirates!" beats "Waah, we are lost." as setup. And we would get the drama of the surviving crews integrating out of necessity, which at least would give a decent reason for strife and conflict they seem to like so much without characters being all jerks. It would be like with the Maquis and Starfleet in Voyager (only probably "grittier" and you would continue to be unable to see in the corridors because they still haven't found a light switch). And if the series survives a bit, they would first mesh over a season or two, becoming cohesive while fighting the mystery aliens maybe (that would give a reason for the military to go along, better the Lucian Alliance they know after all than the critters), and then maybe the SG would track them down in a later season and you would have the split loyalties angst plot...

Yeah, this show already made me think of Voyager in general, but clearly it was missing the Maquis. *g* I like the idea of the two crews trying to mesh, especially if the Earth people weren't in charge; that would make for much more fascinating drama than just repelling the invaders and getting back to the status quo.

The "waah, we're lost" setup, I think, is one of the things that's making it the hardest for me to get into the show. There were elements of "Waah, we're lost and can't get home" in SGA, too, but it was much more about exploring the alien galaxy. I understand that the characters' situation in SGU is difficult, but it's not actually that dire (they're not much worse off than Atlantis its first year, if at all; they have most of the same problems) and their lack of curiosity or wonder leaves me cold. It feels like they're doing little but spending most of their time in a holding pattern waiting to get home and resume their "real" lives. Eli is the only one who doesn't seem to have had his sense of wonder surgically removed.

Come to think of it ... it seems like the aspect of SGA that fans complained about most -- that the writers seemed to be obsessed with getting the characters back to Earth, saving Earth, doing Earthside episodes -- is carried to an extreme in SGU. In SGA the writers were obviously more interested in Earth and its doings than the fandom was, but at least the characters still had strong ties to the Pegasus Galaxy and an active interest in it, and spoke of Atlantis as "home". SGU is like all the Earthside and trying-to-get-home parts of SGA with everything else removed; Earth is the only important thing, and the characters would just as soon see the ship (and in a lot of cases, I think, most of the other people on it) drop into a black hole.

You're absolutely right! And much as I love to see some of my favorites from SG-1, I think it detracts sometimes from establishing the new show.

Jumping in to say I would love to watch that show/read that fic (it should be a bigbang, and it would be glorious)!

I used to say that there were no characters I hated, and I didn't want to hear character hate. Changed my mind! I'll make an exception for Young. He screwed all of this up anyway. None of this had to happen! He just had to reduce the oxygen in the Gateroom drastically until everyone passed out, then secured the Lucian alliance soldiers. It was risky, but less risky than the idiocy he has actually tried.

Yeah. I rarely hate characters, but I think I'm willing to make an exception for Young. Is there anything he hasn't done? He tried to murder Rush, then was willing to kill Chloe (on the alien spaceship) to cover it up; cheated on his wife; nearly destroyed TJ's career; has been feeding the flames of the civilian/military divide; tortured Telford; and on top of everything, can't seem to strategize his way out of a paper bag. No wonder the SGC had him guarding a base in the middle of nowhere. It was the farthest from Earth that they could put him!

Not that I hate babies or anything, but T.J.'s baby situation never interested me all that much. Now that she's been shot in the gut, well, it doesn't look good for the lil tyke.

Frankly, the only character I actually care about is the lady who told Young not to yell at her.

As far as pairings for next season are concerned, I pray for the woman who told Young not to yell at her and a totally different character (with a sense of humor, good looks, clever ideas, and a quirky but endearing personality).

(Chiming in really late as I've been away for most of the last week.)

I mostly gave up on SGU at about ep 9 or 10, but I was staying in an airport hotel last week and happened to catch the first part of the finale. I didn't loathe it, but it didn't feel like much of anything had happened during the ten or so episodes I'd missed, other than more of the same as the first ten.

The are two big things that are stopping me from getting into the show. The first is that most of the characters on the ship don't like each other: I've found that for me to get fannish about something, the characters -- or at least a core group of them -- need to care about each other. And, secondly, I absolutely hate that the communication stones mean that the story is constantly being dragged back to Earth. It reminds me a bit of one of the reasons I drifted away from Battlestar Galactica: that show started with the survivors of humanity fleeing their home planets, but then the show just couldn't get away from Caprica, and kept coming back and coming back to it. Watching the SGU finale, it felt to me that there's an intrinsic problem with the show's set-up in that there's this bunch of people who are supposed to be mind-bogglingly far away from home and completely without backup, and yet the plot is about a source of danger/risk originating from back home, and Telford zips back to Earth to report and get orders. The show might as well be set in a tank at the bottom of the ocean; there's absolutely no sense of the setting -- the Destiny -- as being really integral to what its about. One of the things I liked very much about SGA was the way there was an actual sense of place about Atlantis.

I haven't read the comments for fear of squee-kill - I've just watched the last 2 eps and really enjoyed them! I do have some problems with the show overall - I haven't enjoyed every episode - but I've enjoyed enough of them to keep watching and am waiting for the next season with more excitement than I expected to during the first half of the season!!

I hope we're wrong about TJ's baby (I voted him/her dead too). They didn't go down that sort of route for Teyla - no death or miracle grow baby etc - and I truly hope they don't do that for TJ - it would be a big let down. I expect better of them, especially after how Teyla's pregnancy and baby was handled.

As for the rest, I've no idea. I'm more of a 'wait to find out' type than a 'try to work out what might happen' type with cliffhangars - well, for shows I'm not obsessive about, anyway!!!
