More recs

A few more random recs from all over the place, so that I can close some tabs! Not all Yuletide this time, just fics that I happen to have open in tabs at the moment.

Though I Sang in My Chains Like the Sea (Rivers of London) - This is the long Rivers of London fic that I mentioned in the last recs post, and it is just as good as I had hoped, and more! It's a wonderfully plotty casefic, full of interesting little details of the characters' lives and funny-snarky-sweet interaction between Nightingale, Peter and Lesley. OH EVERYONE! ♥ If you like the books, this is a must-read.

Of Christmas Past by BlueKiwi (Dresden Files) - Like the last Dresden Files fic I recced awhile back, this is another "Thomas and his siblings" fic (I seem to really like those!). This time it's set after "Turn Coat" and deals with Thomas at his darkest and lowest, separated from the people he loves most (Justine and Harry), believing himself a monster, and now, haunted by the (literal) ghosts of his dead brothers and sisters. Despite the premise, it's not horribly depressing; it's more a reminder that Thomas is a much better person than he often thinks he is.

Where the Lovelight Gleams by [livejournal.com profile] rabidchild67 (White Collar) - A sweet and hilarious (and long!) holiday story about Neal and Diana, after being loaned out to the Chicago office, trying to get home to New York for Christmas. So much fun!

Proof by [personal profile] frith_in_thorns (White Collar) - Sweet h/c schmoop with a drunken Neal. Frith-in-thorns does such a wonderful job with these people and their affection for each other.

And I just recently beta'd a White Collar/Carnivale crossover by [livejournal.com profile] aragarna: Let's Shake Some Snow. It's a sweet White Collar Christmas fic with a little background Carnivale woven into it.
sholio: a cup of cocoa and autumn leaves (Autumn-cocoa)
[livejournal.com profile] insmallpackages has their wish-granting post up! I did not make a wish here, but I'm thinking about browsing through and seeing if there are any I'd like to grant. :D It's not all fannish stuff -- it's also things like holiday music mixes and recipes and whatnot.

[community profile] fandom_stocking is back for another year! :D I'm dinking around with signing up; not sure if I'm going to do it, but if I do, it'll probably be for Dresden Files and Once Upon a Time. (Which I still haven't finished watching, but I plan to do that in the next week or so; I have quite a bit of art to do, and it's a good background accompaniment to that.)

Fannishly, I seem to have fallen headlong back into Dresden Files. The nice thing about being gone for a while, and then coming back, is that even in a small fandom there's lovely new fic to read! And I found one that I really loved: The Box by TurtleTotem. Set between "Dead Beat" and "Proven Guilty", it takes a look at a little-explored corner of canon: the fact that Thomas was the only survivor of all the male children in his family. This fic shines a light on those long-dead brothers and on the way that having lived through something like that impacts his relationship with the one brother he has left.

I also found a fantastic Dresden Files fanartist ... who appears to have deleted their gallery. ;_; I wouldn't have known about them if I hadn't run across a few of their pictures reblogged on Tumblr. If you look up "mika merrylark" on Google Image Search, you'll see some of it -- they do an absolutely gorgeous Harry and Thomas. I wish there was a legitimate place to link to them online (and see the rest of their art!) but they don't seem to be around anymore.

I guess if I'm going to post any Yuletide recs before the reveals, I had by golly better do a few, huh? I haven't read everything that's on my want-to-read list, but here are a few I liked:

Recs for Chronicles of Amber, Discworld, Dresden Files, Ex Machina, Lonesome Dove, Vorkosigan Saga, Invisible Man, Red Dwarf, Quantum Leap, Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Zombieland )

'nother batch of recs. I've never really had time around the holidays to actually read more than one or two of the stories while they're still anonymous ... so I'm making the most of it this year! :D

Fandoms: Invisible Man, True Meaning of Smekday, Shawshank Redemption (book), Dead Like Me, Madeline L'Engle, Quantum Leap, Being Human, Dresden Files )

(Edited to add a few Dresden Files recs to the rest.)

It will not stop raining! It's been doing it all day...

I've been terribly remiss in pimping this, but [livejournal.com profile] naye took a prompt I gave her and wrote a really lovely Dresden Files bookverse fic, which can be found here. Cocoa and snow and (quasi) hypothermia and friendship and just general awwww ...!

She's also been writing some interesting SGA fan-meta lately, and since I've been too lazy lately to write actual meta myself, I'll just, er, direct people to this really interesting post on the Wraith (which hopefully she doesn't mind me doing). I've never been especially fond of the Wraith as baddies, for reasons that I think I've gone into here -- they're predators, but not really much else. However, the thing about Naye's post is that it's gotten me thinking about all the story-related things that you really can do with Wraith, especially in their interactions with humans and potential for unleashing human problems on Our Intrepid Heroes, and, well, it's got me thinking about the more positive side of the Wraith (well, "positive" for us fans, not so much for Team Sheppard), so I figured I'd point people towards it ...
