I'm still kinda on the fence about PoI in general, mostly because it keeps sliding towards the moral event horizon in ways I'm uncomfortable with. But then Thursday night's episode happened.

After posting about Person of Interest, I got to wondering why I'm reacting to it the way that I am (scenes that are supposed to be dramatically tense frequently just make me laugh) and I came to the following conclusions. This is obviously all "mileage may vary" of course, and I'm putting it under a cut for PoI spoilers (less spoilery than the last post, but more spoilery for long-plot-arc stuff) and also because this is quite critical of the show (but thinkishly critical, I hope!) and I know a lot of you like it. I certainly hope I don't upset anyone, and like I said, it's definitely a "mileage varies" kind of thing. It's okay to love the show uncritically! Most of the shows I'm currently watching can be dumb as hell, but I love them anyway, often in a quite uncritical kind of way.

What it comes down to is that the stakes aren't high enough, at least not in the right ways. )

Since we've been watching this show and I know some of you do too, how about some thoughts?

I should say outside the cut that my reaction to the show so far has been rather mixed. Actually, it reminds me a lot of the way I felt about season one of Fringe, where I liked some things a lot, and some things not very much, and my favorite characters tended to be side characters rather than the main ones, who I was having trouble warming up to.

Having said that, we're up to ... I think 1x21 was the last one we watched? (We're getting DVDs from Netflix, so it's sometimes a bit difficult to figure out where we are, as opposed to having nicely numbered episodes from iTunes or whatnot. It was the first episode on the 6th DVD ...)

I also have to say that a lot of the fun that we're getting out of watching the show is mocking the characters' pain. It's kind of like Highlander in that the characters have SO. MUCH. ANGST and it expresses itself in such over-the-top and genre-typical ways that ... well, you feel sorry for them and you also want to laugh at them a lot. At least I do, which possibly makes me a bad person.

Lots of spoilers, though it's mostly general snark and talking about the characters rather than spoiling major plot developments )

We watched an episode of Person of Interest last night in which the characters stole a baby (for reasons!), and now I can't help thinking this would make a perfect White Collar plot: because Mozzie would TOTALLY steal a baby if he believed it was in danger, and Neal would help, and then they'd have this baby that they'd have to take care of and hide from Peter, who would be horrified when he found out and want them to turn it in to the foster system -- but they can't! Because, reasons! And of course he'd help them (while grumbling about it).

... Now I want this to be an actual episode. Damn.
