I went to a concert!
Mar. 18th, 2023 09:52 pmI know, who am I even?
I found out a couple of days ago that Roseanne Cash was playing in Fairbanks tonight, discovered there were still tickets, and made a snap decision to go. I'm so glad! It was definitely weird being in that big of a crowd, but it was an absolutely wonderful concert. I can't believe she's 67! New life goals! She was incredibly energetic and enthusiastic and clearly having a good time, and has a great rapport with her band, who she's obviously performed with for a really long time, and also includes her husband John Leventhal. Although it was a fairly small venue, the audience was incredibly engaged and enthusiastic and responsive; it was clear that a lot of people in the audience were big fans of hers, and the participation and energy was great. (This concert very evidently brought all the town's old hippies to the yard. The intro speech to one of her songs that talked about union organizing got a huge cheer.)
I also dressed up a bit - not a lot, it is Fairbanks, after all - but I put on pretty boots and a nice top, because when was the last time I had a reason to dress up a little in public? (One of the ushers flagged me down to compliment my boots and ask me where I got them. They're shiny buckle-enhanced fur-topped ankle boots that have about a 2-week window when I can actually wear them when it's not too cold, too muddy, too slushy, or too warm. But they're pretty!)
Roseanne Cash is Johnny Cash's daughter and her music crisscrosses a wide spectrum of the country/folk/bluegress/pop spectrum. Although I like a number of her songs, she wouldn't have been that high on my list of must-see concerts simply because I'm not familiar with her recent music - most of the songs of hers that I know are from the 80s - but I had no regrets; even though almost all the songs were new to me, she's a great performer with a good stage presence and a beautiful voice.
"Tennessee Flat Top Box" is probably her best-known song (a Johnny Cash cover), and it was the one she closed with. (The other song of hers that's fairly well known is Seven Year Ache, which was her first big hit; she performed that one just before this one.)
For the True Detective fans, one of the songs she performed was one she wrote for the show (apparently the second season opener?). I haven't seen the show or heard the song before, but here it is:
And I'll just throw in one of her less-known songs (not among those she performed tonight) that I like:
(Then I got stuck in the parking lot for a while because nobody in Fairbanks knows how to drive in large groups, including me. I eventually figured out that if I slithered up the row of cars on the wrong side of traffic, I could escape onto the frontage road, because I saw someone else doing it.)
