Dear Yuletide Creator
Thank you for writing for me! I'm sure I'll love whatever you make, and I would be equally delighted to receive anything for any of my requested fandoms. This letter is for idea purposes only, to give you some inspiration, but if you come up with something different, go for it! I am also happy to receive fic that includes whatever winter holidays would be appropriate for the characters' culture and religion, though of course you don't have to.
I have treats turned on and I love to receive them!
General likes: hurt/comfort, fluff, angst with a happy or hopeful ending, found family, curtainfic/domesticity, characters hanging out together (getting drinks after work, playing games, etc), casefic/action, presumed dead, missing scenes, futurefic, loyalty, antagonists/rivals/enemies to friends (/lovers), bickering/banter, AUs, forced cohabiting (tents, hotel rooms, only one bed). In general, two of my VERY favorite relationship dynamics are characters evolving from being hostile to friendly, with all the intermediate steps in between; and characters being "weird" about each other (ship or not) in a slightly codependent/up-in-each-other's-space way that outsiders don't quite understand. I also really love tropey fic (sex pollen! bodyswap! soulbonding! amnesia! werewolves!). I don't mind violence/gore/horror, but would like an optimistic ending.
DNW: permanent character death (temporary/presumed dead for angst purposes is fine, as are OC deaths) or terminal illness that is not cured by the end of the story, pandemics or any mention of covid (different illnesses with similar symptoms are fine, e.g. character with a fever), unrequested non-canon pairings (canon pairings are fine, as are background OC pairings), noncon between requested members of a pairing or intentionally perpetrated by requested characters (sex pollen and other out-of-control situations are fine, as is noncon inflicted on a character by a villain), hopeless downer endings.
Fandoms:
Smokescreen - Dick Francis
Characters: Edward "Link" Lincoln
I read and adored this book just after the Yuletide nomination window closed, and would absolutely have nominated it given the chance, so I was both surprised and delighted to see that someone else had nominated it so I could request it!
This is a perfect Yuletide fandom, because I don't have anything really specific I want, I just want more. I loved everything about the book. Here are some things I would enjoy:
- I really loved Link and Evan's slow slide from vicious enmity into something that might be approaching friendship by the end of the book. I love that Evan is one of the people who helped rescue Link, and I would love seeing more aftermath for Link's recovery after the last scene in the book, preferably involving Link and Evan, or Link and Evan and Conrad. (Also completely on board with Link/Evan, by the way, if you have ship feelings that way.) Really, any further aftermath in which Link finally TAKES A BATH and otherwise gets TLC would make me very happy!
- I also would very much enjoy some kind of tables-flipped thing in which Link gets to return the favor and rescue Evan somehow, whether emotionally, physically in a hurt/comfortish way, or professionally. The glimpses of Evan's claustrophobia in the mine make me think something like that might come up while shooting a movie underground, with Link as the only nearby person who recognizes what's going on. Or maybe Evan wanders off and disappears in the desert while trying to film elephants, his car turns up chewed up by lions, and everyone has to find him. Or, if you want to go for casefic, perhaps someone's trying to kill Evan on a movie set this time, and Link helps out.
- Link's family life is also very nicely developed in the book, and I would really enjoy seeing his reunion with his wife and children after the events of the book. If he's going to have to stay in South Africa for a while to recover, maybe they come there to be with him. I really enjoyed the vivid South African setting and would enjoy seeing more of it!
- I also liked the rest of the extended group of characters in this book. Really I'd be happy with more aftermath for anything: followup on the van Hurens, or on the stable, or a tag scene with Link and his godmother. Or something to do with the premiere of *Man in a Car* now bringing up trauma for Link after everything that happened.
- Another thing I would really enjoy: followup years later with Link running into one or more of the same people again. I suggested some possible scenarios with Evan above, but it doesn't have to be that intense; maybe he meets Evan and Conrad again on the set of a movie? Maybe he comes back to check up on his aunt's stable of horses? Maybe van Huren's teenage daughter, now grown up, visits Link in England?
- Since I loved everyone in this book (well, all the non-murderers, that is), a "five things" following up with several different plot threads or characters would also be highly relevant to my interests!
Chalion (Penric & Desdemona) - Lois McMaster Bujold
Characters: Penric kin Jurald, Desdemona, Adelis Arisaydia
Not all requested characters need to be featured equally; in fact, due to the nature of the canon, it would probably be difficult. If it's impossible to do all three of them, one or two will do! I also really love Nikys, Idrene, and the rest of Penric's extended household, and would be very happy with any of them appearing in a fic.
For this request, I generally prefer the later period in canon when Penric and Adelis (and Adelis and Desdemona) are friendlier with each other. That being said, if you have an idea for early on, perhaps a missing scene or side adventure or even a different sort of AU first meeting, go for it!
My fondest wish is honestly for Desdemona and Adelis to have to interact temporarily without Penric as an intermediary. Obviously this is going to be fantastically difficult due to the nature of the canon, but I have a few handwaves to suggest! The iddiest one for me is that something happens to Penric's consciousness - he gets knocked out by some sort of magical overload? actually leaves his body for a while? - and Desdemona has to take over their shared body, with the added id-benefit that she and Adelis are both worried about him and trying to figure out a way to get him back. Other options: a dream or vision (perhaps Penric really needs to get in touch with his family and Desdemona makes contact with Adelis somehow?), or some kind of spirit-plane thing, or even, though I don't know if it's possible to make this even remotely plausible in canon terms, Desdemona is able to somehow take Adelis as a host for a very brief period, and then goes back to Penric.
But I'm also completely fine with more canon-compliant scenarios! Maybe Adelis comes to visit post-wedding, or needs their help somehow? I love h/c (and this canon has supplied me handily with plenty of opportunities for it), so Adelis getting in some kind of political trouble and being imprisoned or tortured or put on trial and needing to be rescued would be thoroughly relevant to my interests, as would Adelis coming back for a while because Penric and Nikys need his help. Maybe Adelis actually gets to rescue Penric for a change instead of turning up ten minutes after the end of the action! XD But I'm also good with a quiet little slice of life, the family hanging out together, happy reunions, or a canon-compliant mystery/casefic plot - any of that kind of thing.
For more "out there" scenarios, maybe some kind of time travel or time loop that takes the present-day characters back to early in their acquaintance when they didn't like or trust each other, and they have to not upset the actual timeline; that might also be really interesting. Or before that - way back to a previous incarnation of Desdemona, even.
Really anything with these characters would make me happy!
Daniel Blackland series - Greg van Eekhout
Characters: Gabriel Argent, Max
I'm only requesting Gabriel & Max for this exchange, but FWIW I also really enjoy Daniel's cohort; Cassandra is my other main fave (I loved the road trip!) and I would also enjoy fic about Max and Gabriel interacting with her or with anyone else in Daniel's group.
I love their intense and weird loyalty to each other; I love how people assume that Gabriel has absolute power in the relationship but actually it's way more equal (and way odder) than anyone knows. I love how they save each other, emotionally and physically, and in some sense are the guardians of each other's humanity. I'm perfectly fine with gen or ship or some intermediate hybrid; I think it's clear that they are each other's Most Important Person regardless of the actual nature of the relationship.
Some possible ideas for fic:
- I think it's clear that Gabriel adores Max but also takes him for granted a lot. Gabriel also really isn't a guy to whom kind, considerate gestures come naturally (he's more the "shove money at it" type), so I would really like to see him do something considerate for Max: maybe noticing little tells that Max is having a bad day, or figuring out something that Max really likes and getting it for him. Or fetching things for him in San Francisco when he's hurt, or something of that nature.
- Any aftermath for Gabriel's head injury in book 3 would be delightful. If he can't even stand up for more than a few minutes, going back to work in that state is likely going to lead to a spectacular collapse not too long after. Especially with his emotions re: Max being a bit tangled up at that point, I would really love Max taking care of him while he's still kind of out of it and dizzy, and Gabriel coping with all the feelings he's having about that.
- Anything from the ten-year timeskip: little slices of life at Water & Power, Max doing things like getting a place to stay or experiencing things he hasn't done in 15 years like going to a restaurant or otherwise having experiences beyond basic survival, maybe Max having to tangle with legal bureaucracy due to his odd legal status. We see next to nothing of their personal lives, but I would love to see them do something together that's not working - just eating takeout together or otherwise doing some kind of normal-person thing would be really delightful.
- I am always here for ALL THE TROPES. Presumed dead, hypothermia, Only One Bed (maybe they're visiting the outlying parts of Gabriel's canal system and have to stay in some kind of really terrible roadside motel or something), somehow they acquire a baby or a cute kitten or something, someone turns *into* a cute kitten temporarily (Gabriel's magic is probably responsible for this ...).
- I am *extremely* here for cuddling and petting with these characters. They're both so isolated, presumably touch-starved, and Max in particular might have deeply weird ideas surrounding what he wants from sex and/or relationships. (Or not! Maybe he's fairly conventional that way, just hasn't really had a life that allowed him to indulge.) Anyway, I adore kissing and cuddling and hair-petting and falling asleep on each other and just generally both of them getting the affection their lives haven't provided.
Also, I really love the worldbuilding in these books in all its gonzo over-the-topness, and would really enjoy seeing more of their world, more of Gabriel using water magic and clever magic heists and the like, or new parts of LA, southern California, or surrounding regions that we haven't seen in the books yet. (Obviously only if that's your thing.)
Biggles series - W.E. Johns
Characters: James "Biggles" Bigglesworth, Erich von Stalhein
Canon-specific DNW: Anything to do with von Stalhein in WW2. Any other time period - WW1, between wars, and postwar - are all fine.
So, these two, and their 30+-year, epic, honorable enemies to just plain enemies to friends slow burn: I have a lot of feelings about it. I love how much of the time they're just *weird* about each other even when they're actually trying to kill each other, and then they finally get a chance to be friends and turn out to be really good at it. I'm still not over and may never be over the author deciding that they deserved a happy ending even after von Stalhein spent several decades trying to kill everybody on Biggles's side. I'm equally fine with gen or ship or some hybrid where they occasionally hook up over the years or even just smarmy sort-of-shippy gen - I like it all.
I would enjoy seeing any of the characters from the tagset combined with these two, particularly the rest of Biggles's team, Fritz, Marie, or Raymond. I also enjoy outside POV from OCs who don't know all the details of the characters' lives and are trying to interpret them as best they can - good luck with these two, OCs! But it can also just be the two of them, of course.
Some possible ideas:
- Von Stalhein settling into London after Buries A Hatchet. I love what we see in canon, but you don't need to feel like you have to stick to the exact events of canon necessarily. Their first meeting post-Hatchet could be very different, maybe von Stalhein has to do jobs for British Intelligence (and Biggles has feelings about that) or maybe they fall back into each other's orbit more quickly than in canon, or maybe von Stalhein goes missing and Biggles has to find him, or maybe we just see more of von Stalhein adjusting to being in a different country and having lost everything and having to start over.
- I am very thoroughly here for h/c with these characters, if that's your cup of tea. As iddy and tropey as you like: gunshot wounds, stranded in the wilderness, malaria (canon!), or whatever you like. I'm equally good with either of them being hurt - or both! Maybe von Stalhein actually manages to shoot Biggles during the enemy years and realizes he doesn't actually want to hurt him. Maybe Biggles notices that London-era von Stalhein hasn't showed up in a while and goes over to his flat and finds out that he's down with a bad fever, pneumonia or some kind of recurring tropical disease or the like. I also really love head injuries, poisoning, near-drowning, and hypothermia/huddling for warmth, as well as any scenario in which a character comes close to death and other people worry about them.
- Get togethers, if ship is your thing! During the enemy years, post-Hatchet, post-Looks Back, whatever you like. I like sex pollen and arranged marriage and other forced-proximity tropes, but I'm also fine with a more low-key get-together; it's pretty clear after Looks Back that they both really care about each other, and just having the two of them kiss and cuddle and slide gently into a relationship would also delight me. Or maybe a near-death experience catapults them into a feelings admission.
- Case fic! It could be a regular Biggles-type case in which he runs into von Stalhein on the other side, or maybe von Stalhein working with Biggles's team late in canon once he's switched sides. I would really enjoy seeing von Stalhein having to adjust to working as part of a team, maybe reacting to being the hero for a change, and saving people instead of doing spy-type work.
- Handcuffed together! This would be incredible fun with the two of them, especially if Biggles has to fly a plane while only able to use one hand.
- Biggles is captured and auctioned off to the highest bidder by his enemies, and von Stalhein steps in to rescue him. This would work especially well if it's still the enemy years and Biggles genuinely doesn't know whether he's going to receive worse treatment or kindness at von Stalhein's hands (and maybe von Stalhein doesn't either, until seeing a bruised, mistreated Biggles makes him Feel Things).
- I love how incredibly competent they both are at their respective areas (Biggles at airplanes and out-of-the-box thinking; von Stalhein at spy stuff and general all-around smarts) and I really love any scenario in which the two of them end up admiring the other one's intelligence and competence or newly discovered hidden skills (like von Stalhein being able to play the violin). They spend a lot of the series openly admiring each other, so more of that, please!
- Pulpy, ridiculous adventures. Bermuda Triangle, stranded on an island with dinosaurs, mad science giving people powers or wings or gills for breathing underwater, death rays, forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena, possessed or haunted airplanes, Marie Celeste-type ghost ships - basically if it could be in a pulp adventure novel from the 1920s-40s, I'm here for it.
- Raymond's viewpoint on von Stalhein and Biggles. We never actually get his POV at any point in the books, but he MUST have opinions on them and probably quite a lot of them. I would really love to get his outside POV on the events of one of the books, or on von Stalhein settling into London and perhaps working with Biggles's team in the post-Hatchet/post-Looks Back era, or observing Biggles and von Stalhein doing their odd frenemyship flirting thing, or anything else you want to give me.

Hope you get what you want! I've requested Desdemona and Sugane, myself. ^_^
