sholio: airplane flying away from a tan colored castle (Biggles-castle airplane)
I was one of several Biggles people who signed up for hAPPy birthday flash exchange 2, a short flash exchange earlier this month based around [personal profile] karanguni's exchange app which allows you to search people's past requests and, in the case of this flash event, write short fic for them! And our tiny fandom had a very nice showing.

I received the absolutely lovely Reunion by [personal profile] philomytha, in which Erich and Marie catch up in a missing scene from Looks Back, with a wonderful Marie voice and Erich getting a little TLC for his physically and emotionally beat-up condition at this point in canon.

And I wrote In Good Hands for [personal profile] sheron, a short Biggles/EvS piece (with bonus Algy) in which Biggles becomes ill at an event in which Algy is getting an award and tries to tough it out with dubious results, and Algy finds that he now has an ally in the task of making Biggles take it easy when he's not well.

And there is also Interlude by [personal profile] sheron, a sharp, insightful, and lovely Erich & Algy missing scene for Buries a Hatchet; and calling card by [archiveofourown.org profile] dotsayers, a Biggles/Rivers of London fusion with perfect character voices and a very plausible blending of the two canons.

Fic in a Box signups just opened and will stay open 'til Sept. 3, and I'm looking forward to it!

... the de Havilland Dove (used in Looks Back to pick them up from a field in Rodnitz) is NOT small! I was picturing it something like the Auster they sometimes use, a small craft like this with 2-4 seats. It's not like that at all! It's like this:

Reading about the Dove led me to find out that it was competition for the Douglas DC-3, a WW2 cargo craft that's still relatively common in Alaska (we see them, or aircraft like them, flying over our house a lot; we're under one of the main flight approaches to the airport, which does a lot of local short-range cargo flights) - and that led me to this page about a DC-3 having to make an emergency landing at a small-plane airport in Anchorage circa 2021.

Check out the part that starts at about 0:20 where it's coming in low over all those smaller planes! It looks like a special effect. Also, I used to live near that airport and it's right in the middle of the city and a few blocks from the hospital, so very good job to the pilot guiding it in, honestly.

(Edit: Also, the audio is worth listening to on this if it's a thing you're interested in - it's the radio recording from the takeoff and emergency landing, in case you want to hear radio chatter from something like that.)

Anyway imagine landing one of those in a beet field.
