From [personal profile] lunabee34: I'd love to hear about your zombie apocalypse survival skills.

This may be unrealistic confidence on my part, but I think I could survive the apocalypse like a BOSS. :D

(We shall ignore the small issue where my body seems to need regular medical attention or it falls apart. Also the fact that I am completely blind without my glasses. SHUSH. XD)

But anyway, while I am not so sure about the actual "surviving the zombies" part -- my firearms skills are a bit shaky, not to mention the "hitting Grandma in the head with a fire axe" issue might be a problem -- assuming that I do either manage to hole up somewhere remote or find someone larger and more ruthless to protect me, I am all over the rebuilding part of it. :D I actually have fantasies along those lines periodically, which means not only do I have a lot of the applicable skills, but I already have plans! Utterly ridiculous plans which would probably not survive first contact with an actual apocalypse, but hey.

I grew up in rural Alaska without electricity or running water, and so as well as being used to not living with those things, I have a fairly useful pre-industrial skill set. I know how to garden, including saving seeds and/or selecting plants that are easy to propagate (potatoes!). I know how to raise, breed and butcher farm animals. I can fell trees and chop wood (although having to stay warm in Alaska without internal combustion engines at the very least would suck). I know most of the wild plants in my area, their uses, and how to obtain the edible ones. I recently learned to spin, and I have at least a general idea of the principles of weaving (though I would like to learn how to do it properly!).

I'm also married to someone who has the other half of the post-apocalypse skill set that I lack, such as blacksmithing and generally tinkering with things. One of his projects lately -- I am quite serious here -- has been building an electrical power generator in the creek from his extensive collection of scrap lumber and scrap metal; at this point he's still working out the mechanics of the rotating shaft, and I don't actually want the creek dammed considering that in the pre-zombie era we can get perfectly good power from the electric company ... but there is a definite possibility that the Chez [personal profile] sholio Post-Apocalyptic Compound may have electricity, at least in the summer. And, if I know my husband, internal wi-fi. You are all welcome to stop by, charge your laptops, and stay as long as you like, in return for news of the outside world and some help in the garden. :)
sholio: Peter from White Collar, in a suit, smiling (WhiteCollar-Peter smiling)
There is a White Collar love meme going on right now! (For my own purposes I'm saving it for later, because I think everyone and their cousin currently knows spoilers about tomorrow's episode that I don't and I'm trying to stay strictly spoiler-free, but it looks fun for afterparty purposes!)

I had also forgotten until just recently about CollarCorner's WC holiday stocking stuffer round. I am going to try to answer some prompts before the end of the year!

I'm on the Yuletide pinch hit list, but ... is it just me, or have the changes to Yahoo Groups made it a lot more difficult to peruse the prompts than it used to be? You can't open things in tabs anymore, and each message takes forever to load. No love, Yahoo.

The thought occurred to me after I started answering the questions that this meme would be way more interesting if I watched more TV.

Which TV show did you start watching in 2013?
This is hard to answer because I watch stuff mostly on DVD, and this was a super light year for watching anything new. There was Continuum. I think this was also the year we started watching Person of Interest.

Which TV show did you let go of in 2013?
... uh, Person of Interest, probably. /o\ Legend of Korra. I seem to have quit Once Upon a Time by accident, but I swear I'm planning to catch up eventually, though I'm half a season behind by now.

Which TV show did you mean to get into but didn't in 2013? Why?
I was really looking forward to both Almost Human and Agents of SHIELD, but didn't make it more than 3-4 episodes into either. SHIELD seems to have improved, based on people's reactions; I'll probably catch it on DVD. Others that were on the to-watch list but never made it to actually watching: a very long list of shows topped by Elementary, Warehouse 13, and Call the Midwife. And I meant to rewatch A:tLA, but didn't.

Which TV show do you intend to check out in 2014?
Top of the list right now is Orphan Black. Otherwise it's similar to the list of shows I wanted to watch last year, with the addition of Spiral because I want to start watching more French shows for language practice. Netflix doesn't have a great selection of stuff in languages other than English, but this one looked good!

Which TV show impressed you least in 2013?
Legend of Korra. I was so disappointed in some of the writing decisions they made, and I won't be back for season three. Which makes me terribly sad, because I was so excited about getting more of that world, and even though season one was flawed and didn't live up to my expectations, it didn't make me ragequit like season two did.

Which TV show did you enjoy the most in 2013?
Ridiculous as it is, White Collar is still the show of my heart. Actually, I fell back in love with the show after almost quitting it in season four. I can't tell if it's the show or if it's just me (I think mostly me), but I'm really delighted with season five so far.
