Heart Attack Exchange
Dec. 14th, 2020 12:33 amI can finally talk about this!
So this is what I wrote for the Heart Attack (10K+) exchange:
Balance of Trust (Captain Marvel, Maria & Monica & Yon-Rogg, 35K)
It's not the first time Maria Rambeau has had an alien in her living room, but it's definitely the most awkward. Yon-Rogg is seeking sanctuary. Maria just wants to stop having to deal with this kind of crap.
I added this to my offers because I saw that someone had requested Maria & Yon-Rogg, and was really intrigued by that potential team-up, even though I've never written either of them before. So of course that's what I got, and I ended up not only really liking it but actually falling into a bit of a mini-fandom-obsession that I, for obvious reasons, couldn't talk about.
(Also, yes, that was 35K in two weeks. Actually, for the most part, it was written in just four days of almost nonstop writing, though it required a ton of editing because it really read like it was written in four days; I also added almost 10K in revisions because so many scenes were essentially just the scaffolding for what should actually be there.)
This is actually the longest fanfic I've written all year. In fact, I just checked my stats and the last time I posted anything 35K or longer on AO3, aside from ficlet collections, was back in *2017*. So yeah, the bug really bit me, and I ended up completely falling back in love with ... well, with my AU, mainly, but also with this particular corner of the cosmic MCU. I went looking to see if anyone else had requested Captain Marvel that I could treat, and found someone who was looking for Carol/Yon-Rogg. Their letter mentioned that they liked daemon AUs and I decided to give it a try.
I wrote:
Firebird (Captain Marvel, daemon AU, Carol/Yon-Rogg, 3K)
They had called her Vers because it was all they had of her name, but her daemon had always known its name, even when it didn't know its shape.
So yeah, basically my tiny Jude Law crush from the 90s has not yet run its course. I doubt if there's even the slightest chance I'll ever get the Yon-Rogg redemption arc of my dreams in the movies, but, I mean, he's still alive, so there's always a chance he could come back as an antagonist, at least. And Maria and Carol are both fantastic. A+ experience, would write again.
