sholio: sun on winter trees (Default)
Oh Japan. I honestly don't know what to say -- I got back from my Internetless vacation to this. I am so, so sorry for the many thousands who are suffering, but very glad that my friends in Japan are okay.

Here's a list of links on how to donate and volunteer; also some links on finding the whereabouts of people who were in the affected areas. And here is another one with links to news sources as well. I hadn't used (or heard of) GlobalGiving.org before following a link this morning (in the past I've usually just donated directly to Red Cross or MSF), but if you don't have any special preference as to which charitable agency gets your donation and would like it to go where it would be most useful, they look pretty good -- I checked them out online and didn't find any problems/issues, and having now used them, they are very transparent about their fees in the donation process.

There is also [livejournal.com profile] help_japan/[community profile] help_japan, a fandom auction site. It's taking offers of donation incentives, but not yet taking pledges.

Also, I dithered on whether or not to mention this, and it is truly is not meant to be critical of people on my flist -- I know that everyone who's doing this is genuinely well-meaning and just trying to help. But I've seen a number of people picking up and reblogging banners that use pictures of the tsunami destruction in their posts promoting the donation sites, and while it's definitely attention-getting, I'm very uncomfortable with it. It just seems to me that it would be very difficult and heartbreaking for someone who has friends or family in the affected regions to view those images, and traumatic to see them over and over again on LJ and DW.

sholio: (Books)
There was a book I read years ago, and then turned in to the used book store for trade credit, that I think of as the Worst Book Ever (or possibly just the crackiest). I have tried to describe this book to people occasionally, but I couldn't remember the name or author. Luckily, the nice people at [livejournal.com profile] whatwasthatbook found it for me! :D Now I can buy another copy and inflict it on people anew!

This review gives a pretty accurate idea of what the experience of reading the book is like -- you just want to keep turning the pages to see what else the author has decided to cram in there. (The sudden! surprise! telepathy! that only showed up when they had to communicate with people whose language they didn't speak was possibly my favorite thing, but there is so much more WTF in this book that even the review barely scratches the surface of it. I'd completely forgotten about the Aboriginal Spirit Guide (TM). And the dinosaurs!)

sholio: sun on winter trees (BH-heart-Annie George)
Short post with big spoilers for end of series 3 under the cut. Also one casting spoiler for series 4 -- spoiler-spanned so you can avoid it if you want to, but series 4 spoilers are perfectly fine in the comments, so beware.

Apparently, take away my Internet for a week and I turn into Chatty McSpamsalot. I'll get it out of my system soon, I promise. *g*

In the meantime ...

A friend asked me to pass this along: Pam Noles, a rather awesome writer/activist who blogs here, is using crowdfunding at Kickstarter.com to finance an independent theatre project. Her funding deadline is rapidly approaching and she's not reached her goal. You can read about the project at the link below, and if it sounds interesting to you, see if you want to pledge a few bucks: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/270114175/roll-out-death-40-feet-tall. She has various incentives at the various donation levels, and do watch her "about this project" video if you get a chance; it's very fun. :D
