STILL. FROZEN. You know it's a bad sign when tomorrow's forecast says "Temperatures rising to -20."

I just walked down to the mailbox on the highway (3/4 mile each way). Fingers cold. Legs cold. Everything cold.

Let's have some more non-gen recs.

Women's Work - SGA, Miko/Cadman, not rated (probably PG)
This is the story this week at [livejournal.com profile] sga_talk -- and I really loved it; it's not really a "pairing" story so much as a little slice of Atlantis life that happens to include the pairing, if that makes any sense. (And honestly, I think you could make a good case for this one being gen with UST.) I loved the feeling that we're getting a series of glimpses into the lives of the people who aren't onscreen very much.

Come and Join the Dance - SGA, Rodney/Teyla, NC-17
Rodney/Teyla is the only het pairing for SGA that I get all mushy about. Which is really funny, because I can't actually imagine it working out in canon. At all. Besides not having anything whatsoever in common, she'd kill him. But I love this story anyway, and I might've even rec'd it here before. It's incredibly sweet and has lovely h/c and a nice role for the team, too.

I was going to rec some Sheppard/McKay here, but going through my bookmarks, there's actually a bunch of them I've read lately and I'm not really sure how to pick. Besides, I think that most of the ones I liked have been rec'd all over the place already anyway.

I love that Mirabile_Dictu story. It has just the right amount of the sort of permanent change that runs through her work, without extending so far beyond canon or into the future or into another culture that it reads more like original fic than SGA fic, which is a problem I struggle with in many of her other stories. I love the horror of the beginning, and the bond among the team, and the protective smuggling, and the family they've forged by the end. It makes me all huggy.

And I know what you mean about enjoying the adorableness that is Rodney/Teyla even while knowing that it wouldn't work on the show. That's actually how I feel about McKay/Sheppard a lot of the time, and that's one of my favorite pairings too. I think it's another manifestation of the fan's ability to believe several mutually incompatible stories about the characters at the same time.

Yeah, ditto on the McKay/Sheppard. I have a vague desire to someday write a McKay/Sheppard story as fucked up as they'd inevitably become if they did try, just because no one else is doing it. I love the pairing, but believable? Not really, and not just in terms of their canon sexuality.

I think the original-fiction feeling to [livejournal.com profile] mirabile_dictu's stories is actually one of the things I really like about them, if that makes any sense at all. They're AU not in the sense of "This is the story where Rodney is an alcoholic herpetologist and John is a red-backed gecko", but more because there's a thread that runs through them that makes them feel different, and I actually like that.

Sure, that makes sense, and I didn't at all mean to imply that fanfic reading like original fic is necessarily a bad thing, because it can be done effectively. I think it is a matter of taste -- m_d's brand of different-feeling-ness (behold my awesome diction) just doesn't happen to work for me, some of the time.

Also, if you ever do write that "realistic" McKay/Sheppard, you will have one reader for sure. :)

Ah yes, that does make sense! And there are some authors I can't read for similar reasons -- their version of SGA just doesn't feel right to me.

Shivers - and other things!

Really empathize with you! It's nowhere near as cold here in NYC where I am but I'm home all day and the landlord only sends up heat at set times, i.e., early morning, supper time, late evening, unless the weather goes really cold. Thus I end up sitting here in layers of hoodies and longjohns under sweatpants, but with my feet cold in just socks and slippers!

Don't know if I've mentioned this to you, but just because a story has been "recced all over the place" that doesn't mean it's been recced in a place where I visit! So, if you really like a story, please take the time, if possible, to rec it here on LJ, even with a simple mention, so somebody like me who is not on a million lists and sites might find out about it! I'd really appreciate that!

Lastly, my dear, I want to let you know that I finished re-organizing my bookcases and feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment! You were the one who inspired me and I want to thank you so much!

Love, Maxine

At least we have control over our own heat! That would really suck. But congrats on the bookcases!

You know, in theory I completely agree with you; it just feels a bit like bandwagon-hopping to rec a bunch of stories that I've seen rec'd in a bunch of other places.

Speaking of recs

Thank you so much for recommending "Come and Join the Dance" - it's a wonderful story! I'm a slash fan, and a McShep girl, but somehow, this particular bit of het is more than acceptable to me: it's so darn well done! I've commented at the story in a little more detail but just a word, here. Team, community, family: these values are expertly, subtly explored in this story and it's a pleasure to read such a respectful rendering. Thank you for reccing this story! I truly appreciate it! Love, Maxine

You're welcome! Isn't it a lovely story? I go back to it every once in a while for the warm fuzzies.

And I do plan on doing a list of Sheppard/McKay recs fairly soon -- even if some of them have been rec'd elsewhere, because you do have a point about that!

Great! I DO have a point, don't I - grins smuggly!!! Happy holidays! Love, Max

True, but he would die with a smile on his face...

Hee! Probably true.

Is it wrong to read your entries just to see how cold it is? It was 29°C and thunder storms and then sunny and then rainy, bwahahaha. Seriously our water levels are at 38% so any rain is good as long as it is in the catchments.

Thanks for all the recs you've been giving us lately :)

>>Besides, I think that most of the ones I liked have been rec'd all over the place already anyway.<<

Oh, please, don't let this stop you. *g* I'm checking out all your recs and it's a pretty reliable pattern so far: if you like a story, chances are good that I'm going to enjoy it as well. I've just finished "White Walls" by Rhymer, a story I probably wouldn't have checked out because from what I've heard it was pretty dark *and* gen, so, not quite my first choice but it turned out to be an amazing read, very intense and gripping. So I would really like to see what kind of McShep Stories meet your taste. :-)
