Miscellaneous SGA squee

EEEEEEE! [livejournal.com profile] naye! Check out Mallozzi's blog today, with the cut scenes from Reunion! Some of my fanon is actually the writers' as well!

Ronon as an artist is canon! Except they cut the scene for length. Oh, I wish they hadn't!

"Oh, Ronon was quite the artist in his younger days: sculpting, sketching, writing poetry - "

Squeeeeee! See, he's always been an artist in my head! I wish they'd put that in, 'cause then it would be real canon rather than sort-of not-quite canon! But still ... maybe they'll allude to it in a future episode.

And it's also too bad that they cut the explanations for the various Satedan stuff in his room. But cool to know that the writers were thinking about it.

Other squeefulness is provided by [livejournal.com profile] derry667, whose write-up on the Melbourne con includes the following tidbit from Joe Flanigan's panel:

Joe Flanigan was asked the question whether any of the scripts took his character to places that he didn't want to go and he answered that it wasn't so much specific actions or plots that they'd ever tried to give Sheppard, but he did often "fight them" when they decided that they to make his character "more earnest". Apparently, some of TPTB have told him that because he's the hero, he has to show that he "cares" more obviously. His argument is that he thinks that it's more powerful when you see a character fighting against showing that he cares and holding back emotion. He thinks that has a lot more resonance. He said "it's the difference between things having just one level and having two levels." That it's more powerful, especially with guys, seeing them fighting NOT to show any emotion than to just see them cry.

Squeeee! As some of you know, I really love the subtle friendship stuff, but I second-guess myself a lot, wondering if it's really there or if I'm just reading into the relationship what I want to see there. But it really is there, and I love that Flanigan is that invested with his character, that he thinks about those sorts of things and pushes for the kind of behavior that he wants to see from Sheppard, in keeping with the way he plays him.

And combine that with the following from Mallozzi's blog yesterday:

In the original version, as McKay is being escorted out [of the Wraith cell], Teyla tries to hearten him with: “Stay strong, Rodney.” to which an obviously unnerved McKay replies: “I’ll try.” In the original draft, Sheppard calls after him: “Try harder!” But we ended up losing the line because Sheppard is unconscious at this point. Originally, I felt that the fact the wraith had their stunners trained on Sheppard would be enough to keep him in line but Joe felt Sheppard would resist regardless - so we had him zatted instead.

This is just awesomeness x2, because obviously Flanigan really does play Sheppard as a guy who feels a lot under the surface, and cares a lot more than he lets on -- a guy who wouldn't just stand by and let the Wraith drag his friend away, but has to be stunned to keep him from fighting back. And I love how he pushes TPTB for that interpretation of the character, and steers them back when they get off course.

Also, I need to pimp [livejournal.com profile] naye's episode write-ups again, this time for Reunion. Screencaps and squee! I'm just rolling in the SGA-love this week. I've had a long, stressful, generally kind of terrible week at work (not specifically awful, in the sense of interpersonal problems or anything; just way too much work for the number of people that we have to do it) and having new SGA to look forward to ... it was just a nice way to end a lousy week, let me tell you.

On a slightly different note, though -- I've noticed that my personal stress seems to be manifesting itself as being kind of snappy and knee-jerk-ish online ... so if I've posted an opinionated or harsh comment in your blog lately, um, I'm sorry? My verbal, brain-to-keyboard filter hasn't been working all that well lately, so I hope I haven't annoyed anyone by jumping into discussions on topics that get me agitated.

Yeah, saw all that. Alas, nothing is canon until it hits the screen, but Jason himself is an artist. I found an article when he joined the cast - it's still online at some Hawaiian paper. Actually had some of his work up at a gallery! :)

Yeah, Derry's tidbit on Joe and his spin on Sheppard was insightful and interesting. I like how he does take a handle on his character and doesn't just blithely go along with what they write but has input.

Um, haven't noticed any opinionated or snappy posts from you. Most of the snappy people seem to be over at the GW threads nowadays ;)

Oh yup, he does his own jewelry stuff, which is neat.

SQUEEE!

I saw that about Ronon and all I could think was "[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper wrote canon before canon did!!!!!"

[identity profile] tipper-green.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no! Ronon as an artist! They'll be no living with you now! ROFL!

I'm just glad he wasn't the one to have painted that hideous painting! LOL! NT said it looked like something that would have been airbrushed on the side of a van, and I couldn't stop laughing.

If he does this for all the eps, I'm going to be in SGA heaven, seriously. I LOVE this kind of stuff. It just makes it so much richer, don't you think?

[identity profile] with-apostrophe.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it looked like the front cover of a 1980's pulp sci-fi novella.

Mallozzi and Mullie wrote this ep, so I suspect we're only going to get this for the eps they penned.

My main Ronon icon. I need to make some more....

Anyway, I don't know about that. Given that they are the bosses and also have input into the stories they could add it if they wanted to. Not to mention the other writers might put it in as a way of getting on the bosses good side.

[identity profile] with-apostrophe.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well we're 3 episodes in. We've had "missing scenes" for one - the one the owner of the blog penned... As much as I would like to think he's going to do it for every episode I very much doubt it.

I love, love, LOVE that icon! You really need a Rodney "ooh zing!" icon to go with it though. What wonderful moments we would have missed if they hadn't sent Ford to the dark side....

[identity profile] tipper-green.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I figure they're going for the Satedans are Spartans thing, so, not so much with the art, and too much with the manly men! LOL!

[identity profile] tipper-green.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
ROFL! Oh, you are WICKED! How much do I love how your mind works! And it's a really interesting question, because, does merely implying that a character may have had a gay relationship in the past automatically place it in the slash category even if the story itself has nothing to do with that? Although--maybe it depends on how much of the story as a whole is based around that reveal...

Hmmm...(I'm steepling my fingers in contemplation)

You made my night, Sholio! I needed a good laugh!

[identity profile] eretria.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think there's a difference between having an opinion and being an opinionated person. And you have never struck me as one of the latter group.

In the meantime? Those tidbits of background information are wonderful, adding so much depth.

I'm also glad Joe got to play it his way, because Sheppard's line was rather mean. Sometimes the writers go too far to try and be funny.

Eee~! That is AWESOME! I love it! Oh, man, I've said it before, but - I wish the episodes were longer!! When they could fit stuff like this into it... Maybe Ronon-as-an-artist could make it into some other ep, because I just adore that they're giving him that extra depth. Even if it doesn't make it to the final version of the episode. (And you called it! Heeeeeeeeee~!)

And Joe Flanigan! Is protective of Sheppard! Awww. ♥ I loved that he was the one to insist on John being stunned by the Wraith when they came for Rodney, of course, but the whole thing with how he's usually making his acting choices - it's so very perfect, and so very Sheppard, and I'm so happy to see the characters in such good hands. ♥ Not that I didn't love him before, but it's cool to know this is all quite intended - and of course I agree that, yes, this way is much more interesting. It's what makes those moments when John loses some of that control over his emotions pack that much more of a punch!

Plus - you're sending people to my squee! Eeee~! *blushes* Thank you. ♥

Off to read Mallozzi's latest entry now!

After reading the post, there are a couple of other scenes I would've loved to see (details on where Ronon got his stuff, Sheppard's line about Ronon's welcome back party), but mainly I'm just wishing they'd kept the explanation of the IOA getting recommendations from Woolsey and O'Neill regarding Carter, and their view of her as sort of half military, half scientist... Not addressing something that's been set up as one of the major themes of the show (military vs scientist) is just silly! Of course, I don't know what they could have cut to make room for it, but... I'm going with that explanation as hard canon, even if it was left on the cutting room floor.

I know! It's not exactly the sort of thing that comes up a lot, but - I'm hoping that since Mallozzi & Mullie wrote it, the others were in on it and accepted it as part of their collective characterization of Ronon. So maybe it'll get another mention somewhere?

And the actors! Yes, it's really fantastic. ♥ I mean, it might be that all actors in all shows care this much for their characters, but it really doesn't feel that way to me... Some shows are too heavily reliant on a pre-structured plot, and others just never get to that level of intimacy that we actually have with the main SGA characters. But - it's so nice to see all of them get involved with the development and presentation of their characters. (Hee! Fuzzy dice in the jumper would've been incredibly funny, but probably HELL on the special effects and matching up shots and such, so - maybe he can have fuzzy dice on something else, later? *g*) And I do think you can tell from the result that it's a labour of love and care and lots of individual thought and effort.

...meep. Just thinking about the possibility of not getting renewed is making me all kinds of unhappy. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, since it's all I can do from here, but I will say this - neither the show, nor the fans, nor any of the people involved in making it deserve a cancellation at this point!

[identity profile] with-apostrophe.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was gutted the artist stuff didn't make it into the ep, but am relieved he didn't paint that hideous painting himself. I was wondering whether he'd picked it up at a market somewhere, whether Lorne had painted it (though how he would know what Satedan warriors look like, I don't know) or that he'd painted it.

And it's also too bad that they cut the explanations for the various Satedan stuff in his room. But cool to know that the writers were thinking about it.
I had assumed that Ronon hadn't gone back to Sateda after "Runner" and before "Sateda" - but the idea that he did makes more sense than my assumption. And the fact that he did bring back things, that he was not willing to forget his past, is a great contrast to his friends and their "new life" with the Wraith.

I was also sad that the mention of the "welcome back" party never made it in. I mean it's logical that they have parties, but we never hear about them or get invited! No fair!

Yay to the Mallozzi for doing this.

Glad we lost that Sheppard line, it would have seemed a bit harsh - and it makes a lot more sense for him to be stunned trying to protect a team member...

I love that Joe M's done this for us. It's great to see what was meant to be, even if it's frustrating on one level that certain ideas/lines didn't make it to canon. (Like Ronon the artist, the welcome back party, the line that I love from McKay: “Still, I'm one of those equal opportunity fearers.” which I mentioned in my reply to your previous Reunion squee...)

I like that Joe F isn't worried about giving suggestions to make his character stay inline. I agree about the two levels thingie...I like that Sheppard has problems letting people know he cares...it's just so right for him! (And Rodney's not that much better, either!!) It's also nice to see a few scenes where he tries to overcome that a bit (eg *that* scene in Sateda). The way in this ep that Sheppard says stuff to Ronon (about him leaving, the mess hall scene) by not saying it...LOL! So John!

Still squeeing over the first four episodes (yes, slap wrist, I saw the fourth one online...Of course, I know have to wait about *two weeks* for a new episode to turn up!)

[identity profile] with-apostrophe.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I was seriously thinking about whether I should watch SGA4x04 in advance of the showing, seeing as my "I don't watch series out of order the first time" objection is no longer relevant. But yes - having to wait longer for the next one... Ah well - go back and watch an episode you've no seen for a while, perhaps.
