Fragment of AU Fest Algy & EvS sudden onset telepathy fic
One thing I started back in August, but then never went very far with, was trying to write something inspired by the following prompt in AU Fest:
Something handwavy happens to our world so random people develop magical super powers? (Telepathic bond between Algy & EvS, much to their mutual horror.)
It was one of those situations where I had a scene in mind, wrote that scene (all 300 words of it), and then never really managed to come up with a fic to go around it. So I figured I might as well go ahead and post it. I still want to write something like this, but it probably won't be this exact thing.
---
"Stop thinking," Algy said between his teeth.
"I'm making an effort. More of an effort than you are, it seems," von Stalhein said from the other side of the cell.
Algy visualized von Stalhein falling headfirst out of the open door of an aeroplane, and felt him wince through the deeply unwanted bond that now existed between them. "How about you think about a nice brick wall or something for a while?"
"That," von Stalhein said, "is not the sort of thought that's likely to result in a plan to get out of here."
"It's not as if any of your other thoughts have either," Algy snapped. "Of course it'd help if you could focus on the—okay, yes, stop, anything but that."
If Algy had thought about it beforehand, which he very much had not because why on earth would he, he'd have expected von Stalhein's mind to be as cold, rigid, and blank as his face was most of the time. To his great regret, he now knew that von Stalhein's thoughts bounced around between about 40 different things a minute, and many of them were Biggles-related.
Including brief flashes of Biggles with no clothes on, Biggles in von Stalhein's flat, and far, far too much information about what they had been doing last night.
"Stop that."
"Apologies," von Stalhein said, not either sounding or feeling sorry. "I was distracted for a moment."
"So was I, believe me." Algy wondered if shouting for the guards would help. Maybe one of them would take pity on him and shoot him.

(Not shown: Biggles gets there to rescue them and Algy has to deal with Erich's reaction to being confronted by a whole entire Biggles.
Erich's brain: *sunshine, sparkles*
Algy: .... I didn't even know you HAD those emotions)

:-D What a GREAT CONCEPT, truly the two absolute worst people to suddenly have to share thoughts. To his great regret, he now knew that von Stalhein's thoughts bounced around between about 40 different things a minute, and many of them were Biggles-related absolutely got a laugh <3
(As an aside, I always think about how fics with this trope could do such interesting things with actual cognitive differences, like a character with a visual imagination finding themselves sharing thoughts with someone who has aphantasia, or someone with an internal monologue being matched with someone who processes stuff as abstract concepts...so much potential there in addition to the usual drama!)

That's a really fascinating concept with the incompatible mental processing, as well! I don't think I've ever seen it done, but I can think of quite a few sets of characters it would work well for. Honestly, I love the idea of two people whose thoughts run along such dissimilar lines that they have trouble understanding each other even with telepathy...

I am picturing them getting into the world's weirdest feedback loop when Biggles arrives, each transmitting massive relief and happiness to the other in a very confusing way that culminates in Algy accidentally going up to Biggles and snogging him when he arrives...

I love that von Stalhein's mind is quick and bounces around a lot, that seems a very him thing!
