sholio: sun on winter trees (SGA-watch)

My SGA squee manifesto *g*

This is adapted from comments I've written elsewhere...

Knowing that the next 14 episodes are all we're going to get (barring possible movies), I am absolutely determined to wring every possible bit of pure distilled happy out of the rest of the season. We still have well over half a season to go, including what appear to be some truly kick-ass episodes coming up, and damned if I'm going to let MGM/Sci-Fi's marketing decisions affect my ability to enjoy them. What we've got left is more than some shows get; it's more than a book or a movie, and I've enjoyed those just fine, even knowing they're finite.

I plan on watching those episodes, and squeeing over them wholeheartedly, and writing tags and just generally getting the most out of them, and the fandom, that I possibly can. Knowing that there won't be more, and having them spread over a number of weeks rather than crammed into a marathon watching session (like I always do if I have the whole season at my fingertips all at once *g*) I'm really going to try to savor and enjoy and get the most I possibly can out of my watching experience. I'm going to try to write my fanfic ideas now, and read as much fic as I can, just in case my interest wanders on and there *isn't* a later.

What we've got right now is a heads-up about the end, but we've still got a lot of show, a lot of fanning, to go. And I don't want to let the knowledge of the show's end spoil my enjoyment of what's left.

I swear that I'm not trying to downplay or devalue anyone's grief and pain. Trust me, I'm feeling it too. I don't expect people to be all-positive-all-the-time in any of these discussions. You can come looking for hugs and cookies if you need them, or come to vent and cry. That's fine with me.

But I do plan on putting up relatively cheerful squee-posts until the end of the season. What you do with them is, of course, up to you. Nobody will be kicked out for being sad. *I'm* sad. But fandom is my happy place, and I plan to keep on making it my happy place, no matter what those corporate execs do to our show.

And, like I was discussing in the comments to the last post, I absolutely want to borrow an idea from SG1 fandom. After their series ended, they started rewatching an episode a week and discussing them/sharing fanworks at [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate. I want to do an SGA version of that. (Name ideas, anyone?) It's been awhile since "Rising", and I like to think of all the tags that could be written *now*, knowing what we know about where it's all headed.

Thank you very much to everyone who stopped by my last post, and to everyone who's put up support and commiseration posts for the fandom in general - I still think this is a wonderful fandom, no matter what, and I love being here, and I don't plan to go anywhere.

You are wonderful. Just... thank you for keeping such a positive attitude. I too will be squeeing my head off, now more than ever. ::hugs tight:: Thank you again.

Thank you!

I know it's hard - there are times when I just want to curl up and cry. But I refuse to let the bastards win! *g*

I like the way you think. I'm trying to keep in mind that five years is a good run for any show, that after that (or well before) most shows fall apart. The actors want out or raises, the writing runs out of steam or fails to conclude a story line that should be done just to keep going. Let's let Atlantis go, crowned in laurels and never old, tired or disappointing.

Since so many of us have the DVDs, a project like watching an episode each week from the beginning would be a lovely way to keep the squee alive. Like you, I'm not going anywhere yet.

Off the top of my head, howabout calling the proposed community something like Rise Again or Atlantis Redux or Loop the Gate?

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I like "rise again" (though I don't know if people might find it a) sacreligious, or b) too uncomfortably reminiscent of the Confederacy). The best I'd been able to come up with so far was "pegasus_project".

And, yes, as sad as I am that it's going, I'm really happy that it's going out good -- that it's not one of those shows where I don't even end up buying the last couple of seasons on DVD because it's not worth it.

*g* Yeahhhh ... I don't think that's a good idea (not that it wouldn't be amusing). Also, I don't think people outside the U.S. would get the meaning - at least not the *right* meaning.

As for names, how's intergalactic_gateway (connecting us back to home!), or maybe the_midway_station (somewhere between canon and fandom). Somehow the idea of a re-watch community makes me think of the network they built between the two galaxies...

I'm with you! It's sad, but at the same time, we got five seasons (and at least one film) and that's more than some shows. I'm going to squee over the episodes (though the writing will be every bit as hit and miss as usual I guess *sigh*), but yes, I'm not letting it spoil my enjoyment.

And the comm idea sounds great. No name ideas for it though, sorry.

Yes - we've got a lot, and we have more to come. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't having bouts of major sadness over it, but I'm also looking forward to what's to come.

I'm going to indulge myself and be sad a little longer. Just till after Friday night and then I'm going to scrape myself together and be happy with the 14 eps that are left.

Thanks for the positive post. I really needed to read that.

oh, yeah! I like your manifesto. That's my own plan, and I've been living with my head in the sand all day with my fingers in my ears going 'lalalalalala' because I just don't want to acknowledge that it's going to be over. So, I'm with you on the happy, and I'm so there with the rewatching, discussing of previous eps. I have no suggestions for now, but I'll be back to share if I come up with anything.

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, I plan on not thinking about the cancellation and enjoying the rest of the season as best I can - it looks like we have some awesomeness coming up, and I can't wait. :D

[identity profile] tringasolitaria.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually feeling a lot better about things today myself. Yeah, I'm still disappointed and sad (and I think there's times over these next 15 episodes where it's going to really hurt), but I'm calm about it, and interested to see what's next. And I think you were right yesterday in what you said. I'm going to miss seeing new episodes with John and Rodney, but I think having a closed canon without the emotional rollercoaster of wondering what they're going to do next might be a lot of fun. I'm interested to see what everyone's creativiy comes up with.

And I'm all for a rewatchathon! ;)

[identity profile] parisntripfan.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I like the way you think Friendshipper.

I am going to enjoy the show while it is on the air, and enjoy the fanfic. I am still trying to figure out what is going through Sci-Fi's (or more likely NBC Universal's) brains but I am not going to let that ruin the next 14 episodes for me.

And I love the idea of doing a rewatch. It is always fun to go back to an earlier season and see where the characters were then and how far they have come.

ext_1981: (BH-Mitchell smile)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I do wonder what the heck they're thinking, cancelling the show when its popularity is on an upswing. On the other hand, it's only the latest in a long line of stupid corporate decisions where genre TV is concerned - it's a rare show that makes it even as long as we did.

I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season, and I don't plan to let this spoil it.

[identity profile] tabby333.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 02:05 am (UTC)(link)

I just keep wishing they'd have held off until at least the midseason hiatus because everyone is saying I'm done! Screw them! I'm figuring it's going to be almost a year before the series finale and then the movie aires, and like I you, I plan to enjoy them all. In a lot of ways, we're lucky we got Season 5 at all. For me, it's the shock of the show doing well and showing continued improvement and having it canceled now when it's really on such a wonderful roll.

I was thinking of opening up sga_details_fic to all seasons for just the same reason you mentioned... let's celebrate what's had us writing for all these seasons (because I'm worried it will eventually fade, too). I'm still pissed and sad and frustrated, but it will in no way keep me from loving what I have left. And will just give me a reason to go back and rewatch my DVDs more often.
ext_1981: (Wiseguy-Vinnie moodlit)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
It really is sad that they had to announce it so early; SG1 fandom had to deal with this last year, too, with that dark cloud hanging over most of the season. Why do they do that?

But we've got lots of fannish happiness ahead, and I'm holding onto that.

[identity profile] trishkafibble.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
You rock on, girl. And definitely, I'm THERE with the redial. ...How about "rising_tide" as a name? As in, the show has ebbed, but the fandom surges forward? (Which I so much hope will be the case!)
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 05:38 am (UTC)(link)

*adopts [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper's motto*

I will squee delightedly for each ep. I will wallow in the teaminess, the whump, the character moments, and the surprises. I will write episode tags for every episode, maybe more than one in some cases. I will stay positive, love my show, love my fellow fans, and take one week at a time.

I am all for the rewatch idea. I adore writing ep tags in hindsight.

Comm names... Hm...

I really thought about it too. Now that I know it ends, I certainly will enjoy everything they throw our way. You're right, SGA is a happy place and since there are still so many fans it won't go away all of a sudden. I'm sad too but like you not in any way sheer desperate. I find the idea with rewatching SGA with the whole (or not whole but still) fan community great. But, y'know, names are not my forte xD I'm looking forward to read all the fictions you will come up with. They are usally awsome.
