My SGA squee manifesto *g*

This is adapted from comments I've written elsewhere...

Knowing that the next 14 episodes are all we're going to get (barring possible movies), I am absolutely determined to wring every possible bit of pure distilled happy out of the rest of the season. We still have well over half a season to go, including what appear to be some truly kick-ass episodes coming up, and damned if I'm going to let MGM/Sci-Fi's marketing decisions affect my ability to enjoy them. What we've got left is more than some shows get; it's more than a book or a movie, and I've enjoyed those just fine, even knowing they're finite.

I plan on watching those episodes, and squeeing over them wholeheartedly, and writing tags and just generally getting the most out of them, and the fandom, that I possibly can. Knowing that there won't be more, and having them spread over a number of weeks rather than crammed into a marathon watching session (like I always do if I have the whole season at my fingertips all at once *g*) I'm really going to try to savor and enjoy and get the most I possibly can out of my watching experience. I'm going to try to write my fanfic ideas now, and read as much fic as I can, just in case my interest wanders on and there *isn't* a later.

What we've got right now is a heads-up about the end, but we've still got a lot of show, a lot of fanning, to go. And I don't want to let the knowledge of the show's end spoil my enjoyment of what's left.

I swear that I'm not trying to downplay or devalue anyone's grief and pain. Trust me, I'm feeling it too. I don't expect people to be all-positive-all-the-time in any of these discussions. You can come looking for hugs and cookies if you need them, or come to vent and cry. That's fine with me.

But I do plan on putting up relatively cheerful squee-posts until the end of the season. What you do with them is, of course, up to you. Nobody will be kicked out for being sad. *I'm* sad. But fandom is my happy place, and I plan to keep on making it my happy place, no matter what those corporate execs do to our show.

And, like I was discussing in the comments to the last post, I absolutely want to borrow an idea from SG1 fandom. After their series ended, they started rewatching an episode a week and discussing them/sharing fanworks at [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate. I want to do an SGA version of that. (Name ideas, anyone?) It's been awhile since "Rising", and I like to think of all the tags that could be written *now*, knowing what we know about where it's all headed.

Thank you very much to everyone who stopped by my last post, and to everyone who's put up support and commiseration posts for the fandom in general - I still think this is a wonderful fandom, no matter what, and I love being here, and I don't plan to go anywhere.

You are wonderful. Just... thank you for keeping such a positive attitude. I too will be squeeing my head off, now more than ever. ::hugs tight:: Thank you again.

I like the way you think. I'm trying to keep in mind that five years is a good run for any show, that after that (or well before) most shows fall apart. The actors want out or raises, the writing runs out of steam or fails to conclude a story line that should be done just to keep going. Let's let Atlantis go, crowned in laurels and never old, tired or disappointing.

Since so many of us have the DVDs, a project like watching an episode each week from the beginning would be a lovely way to keep the squee alive. Like you, I'm not going anywhere yet.

Off the top of my head, howabout calling the proposed community something like Rise Again or Atlantis Redux or Loop the Gate?

You are awesome and I thank you for it. :D

Ooh, I like "rise again" (though I don't know if people might find it a) sacreligious, or b) too uncomfortably reminiscent of the Confederacy). The best I'd been able to come up with so far was "pegasus_project".

And, yes, as sad as I am that it's going, I'm really happy that it's going out good -- that it's not one of those shows where I don't even end up buying the last couple of seasons on DVD because it's not worth it.

Thank you!

I know it's hard - there are times when I just want to curl up and cry. But I refuse to let the bastards win! *g*

You are wonderful.

I love this post! It made me happy after a day of seeing all my beloved flist wail and cry. Carry on! *nods firmly*

I got as far as things like "Back_to_Atlantis" which is pathetic, or "Return_To_Atlantis" which incorporates an episode title sort of. Or "Pegasus_Returns", "Atlantis_redialed". Be good to have something obviously SGA-esque or at least Stargate-esque in the comm name.

I will be joining you with the squee and all the rest. Must try to sleep now.

Squee manifesto, that's perfect!

We still have well over half a season to go, including what appear to be some truly kick-ass episodes coming up, and damned if I'm going to let MGM/Sci-Fi's marketing decisions affect my ability to enjoy them.

WORD.

I'm with you in the squee fest and I think I will write as many tags as I can! The redial thing sounds goods. I'm up for it!

[identity profile] ladyflowdi.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Darn right! We will love and squee and love our show. ::snubs nose at stupid Scifi!::

I've got a feeling that what you were talking about yesterday, about SGA becoming closed-canon fandom, is going to be about ten million times more awesome than anyone thinks. We all have too much to say, still, too much to write, too much to explore.

[identity profile] alipeeps.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice post. I too intend to thoroughly enjoy the eps we have left and post my usual squeeeing LJ ramble where appropriate. :)

Prior to SGA, all of the fandoms that I wrote in, and most of the ones I read in, were closed-canon fandoms. And I wrote a lot, and read a LOT. *g* I'm scared, because I know the fandom will change and some people will leave, but I'm also very hopeful - and excited. I've never been in a fandom this long, but, to my own surprise, I have no intention of going anywhere.

*g* Yeahhhh ... I don't think that's a good idea (not that it wouldn't be amusing). Also, I don't think people outside the U.S. would get the meaning - at least not the *right* meaning.

Sometimes, you *need* a manifesto! *g*

Apparently, I utterly fail at woe. But I plan to be cheerful to the last, damn it!

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*snort* Amusing, but would probably not draw in the right sort of crowd. I'm moving away from phone references to postal ones, if anything non, uh, connotative pops to mind I'll toss it out there.

And it's a very good manifesto! Squee makes me happeh!

As for names, how's intergalactic_gateway (connecting us back to home!), or maybe the_midway_station (somewhere between canon and fandom). Somehow the idea of a re-watch community makes me think of the network they built between the two galaxies...

I'm with you! It's sad, but at the same time, we got five seasons (and at least one film) and that's more than some shows. I'm going to squee over the episodes (though the writing will be every bit as hit and miss as usual I guess *sigh*), but yes, I'm not letting it spoil my enjoyment.

And the comm idea sounds great. No name ideas for it though, sorry.

Seriously - your manifesto rocks my world. Where can I sign up?

Feeling so, so much better than I was this morning. What a difference, waking up to bad news, and going to sleep reading this post...!

*snuggles*

Atlantis Rising- or wait, that's been done?

Tide coming in

that general theme? Sounds like a great idea, I'm in!

I'm *so* glad you're feeling better. This whole fandom thing is supposed to make us happy, not break our hearts. And sometimes, it takes a bad thing happening to bring out the better side of fandom...

[identity profile] spike21.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that. I'm trying to stay positive myself. I mean I hate it, I hate losing them, but yeah, I want this to be my happy place for as long as possible.
