Trick or Treat letter

[community profile] trickortreatex signups end Sept. 18. Join meeee!

My prompts/likes/etc are for suggestions only. If you have a different idea for one of the requested fandoms, go for it!

I have requested fic for my main gift, but I would love to receive art treats.

General things I enjoy in fic:
Case fic. Slice of life. Characters hanging out together. Enemies/antagonists to friends. Hurt/comfort. Tortured together, or recovering afterwards. Trauma recovery. Witnessing the other character having nightmares or other trauma after-effects and learning about it that way. Prickly, abrasive, tentative friendships. Banter. Characters being gentle with each other's damage (physical or emotional). Characters being terrible with each other's damage even though they mean well, because they don't know how to be gentle and/or are trying so hard to protect their own tender places. Characters being all up in each other's space, especially if they're not actually a couple but are just That Weird about each other. Platonic bedsharing or sharing of other spaces (tents, hotel rooms, etc). Cuddling and gentle touching. Protectiveness. Characters getting badly hurt for someone else (taking a bullet, taking torture to spare them, etc) and the other character feeling terribly guilty about it and the first one not minding at all, or at least not as much as the other one thinks they ought to. Fever, delirium, head injuries, generally being dazed and floppy and out of it. Sex pollen with a focus on taking care of each other's emotional and physical needs, during and/or after. Desperate worry. Presumed dead. Actually dead and then magically healed/fixed/rescued from the afterlife. Handcuffed together. Trapped together. Hiding injuries/illness, not believing they're worth saving or being taken care of. Overworking themselves while recovering from injury or illness, and relapsing. Learning to be loved and to believe they're worthy of love. Families of choice.

Including canonical pairings is always fine!

General DNWs:
Permanent character death or terminal illness (presumed dead, miraculous healing, or characters canonically being ghosts/zombies/etc are all fine). References to real-world plagues currently happening (similar symptoms from a different cause are fine). Dark or downer endings - even if very dark or spooky things happen in a fic, I'd like to end on a note of hope.

Fandoms:

The Defenders
Misty Knight, Ward Meachum, Danny Rand, Colleen Wing

I would be delighted with a gift featuring any of these characters, singly or together! Iron Fist is one of my favorite things in the Netflix MCU; I love its optimism and completely bonkers urban-fantasy stylings, and I adore all of these characters. My main ships for this show are Danny/Colleen and Ward/Misty; I also like Misty/Colleen, and I really love the gen Danny & Ward, Ward & Colleen, and Misty & Colleen relationships. As far as other characters you could have them interact with, I also particularly love Jessica Jones and Jeri Hogarth and Claire, and just the Defenders generally, and really like the possibilities of these characters interacting with them.

Prompts:

+ Post-canon road trip! I would love to explore some of the ENDLESS possibilities of sending the two characters with, between them, the common sense and good decision-making abilities of a box of pencil shavings on a road trip together. Do they bond? Do they get captured? Do Misty and Colleen have to rescue them, with lots of snark and eye-rolling? I am into all kinds of forced intimacy tropes (forced to share a tent/bed/hotel room! dealing with each other's nightmares/scars!), and all of the various possibilities of the two of them getting to know each other better on what basically amounts to a buddy-movie road trip. I would also be quite delighted with Colleen and Misty going on a road trip of their own - maybe to rescue these idiots, maybe just to get out of town for a while.

+ Halloween in New York! There are so many things you could do with this! Maybe it's spooky and scary and sad - they're haunted by the ghosts of their dead loved ones, or the people they didn't save. Inflict Harold's ghost on Ward, or Danny's dead parents on him, or Bakuto on Colleen. Maybe they have to investigate a haunted building, or figure out why people are turning into their Halloween costumes or rescue someone from a serial killer's house - feel free to rip off the plot of any horror movie or TV Halloween episode and run the characters through it. But maybe Halloween is fun and nice for them - perhaps it's all about Colleen getting her friends to volunteer at the community center to hand out candy to kids, or Danny and Ward doing something for charity, or Misty having a quietly spooky but sweet encounter with a ghost while she does Halloween night duty.

+ AUs! I love AUs, for some canons especially, and this is a canon where I would really enjoy an AU. You can AU them completely into a different setting (high fantasy, IN SPAAACE, 1920s/30s, etc), or spin the dial and turn canon in a different direction. What if Ward was on the plane that crashed in the mountains, and came back presumed-dead 15 years later to a very different, jaded Danny who's been dealing with Harold all these years? What if Colleen was full-fledged Hand and Danny has to pull her out from under Bakuto's thumb? What if Misty is a werewolf, or the recipient of superpowers like Luke or Jessica? I would be delighted with any of the AUs in my AU Exchange letter, and I also would enjoy anything from this set.

+ Involuntary bonding where the characters share any subset of pain, emotions, thoughts, etc. is something that's really fun for me, and there are various ways it could be done between various characters in this canon. Maybe Harold bonded Danny and Ward somehow, just to give him an additional means of control over one or both of them. Maybe Colleen and Danny find out that being the Iron Fist gives them a degree of emotional or sensory overlap. Maybe anyone the Iron Fist heals ends up sharing sensation/emotion with them, and Colleen heals Misty and therefore Colleen and Misty and Danny (and Ward?) end up in some kind of big sensation overlap pile that is HELLA AWKWARD.

+ Brand new superpowers! Because of an alien device, a drug, magic, etc. Terrible side effects a plus.

+ Any sort of ordinary case fic, with or without h/c, would also be very fun for me. Just give me the characters dealing with an adventure, saving people, hanging out on the world's most boring (or weirdest) stakeout, fighting dinosaurs, etc. Or maybe it's even more everyday than that! Going out for drinks. Playing board games. Colleen and Ward awkwardly teaming up to throw Danny the first birthday party he's had since he was 10. Danny dragging everyone into a game of D&D. Everyone throwing a belated promotion party for Misty.

Torchwood
Owen Harper
Treat, Trick

Owen! I love him so much! He's a complete mess, a bundle of issues and damage and prickly anger, yet he loves his friends so much and when you scrape off the hard outer shell of jerk, you find that underneath it's gentle, caring doctor all the way down -- at least until you hit the core of stubborn bastard, but that core is also fueled at least partly by angrily, aggressively caring about people.

I ship him mainly with Tosh and Ianto, separately or together (no need to break up Jack/Ianto if you go the Owen/Ianto route; I also think of these characters as highly compatible with any/all poly configurations). I also really liked Owen/Diane. And I adore all of his friendships, particularly those with Ianto and Tosh and Martha, but I would be totally there for a fic with Owen & Gwen, or Owen & Jack, or Owen & anyone.

Fandom-specific DNW: Referring to Owen, Tosh, or Ianto's canon perma-deaths other than as part of a fixit (Owen's undeath or death fakeouts are fine), bashing of Gwen or any other character (if you don't want to write someone, you can have them be somewhere else for the duration of the fic; that's fine).

Prompts:

+ Halloween at the Hub! Anything spooky, scary, or seasonal would work so well for this canon. Maybe the team has to investigate a genuinely haunted house, or the ghosts of their dead loved ones come back to haunt them. Feel free to rip off plot elements from any horror movie or Halloween episode of a TV show and inflict it on the Torchwood gang. Or maybe it's actually not terrible - maybe they tell ghost stories late at night while keeping an eye on the Rift, or go to a costume party.

+ Owen gets undeath comfort. Really, this can take any form at all, from actual fixes for various aspects of his condition (he gets to have sex! he gets to eat again!) to his friends finding ways to make things a little nicer for him. I am a complete sucker for cuddling, platonic or otherwise, and Owen must be incredibly touch-starved by this point; for additional angst, he probably thinks that people hate to touch him because he's no longer warm, so having him reassured about this would make me very happy. Maybe a "five things" type of fic in which various teammates find excuses to touch or hug or cuddle with him. Or people staying up late with him to keep him company since he can't sleep - or maybe he actually CAN sleep (he looks like he might actually be on the verge of it when he's alone in his apartment in 2x08) but he's afraid to just let go and do it, so he needs someone nearby or in the bed with him in order to get some actual much-needed rest and oblivion.

+ Martha comes back to work with Torchwood on another case. Or maybe she and Owen get lunch (well, lunch for her, nothing for Owen if he's undead, I guess). Their playful-affectionate dynamic was so great.

+ The events of 2x13 never happen, and whatever John's plan was, it isn't that, so after they get out of the collapsed building, they have some down time for Owen to deal with Tosh's arm and Ianto's shoulder, and everyone can get the emotional aftercare they deserve. Just let them huddle for a little while and have some hot cocoa and deal with the fact that they all almost died.

+ Any/all fixits for 2x13. Maybe it never happened at all; maybe Owen gets out at the last minute and he and Tosh have to deal with the conversation they had. I would love to see a post-nuclear-reactor reunion in which they thought Owen did die and then he turns out to be okay. Maybe John uses his vortex manipulator to make amends by popping in and grabbing Owen. Maybe someone else travels back from an apocalyptic post-CoE future and saves them.

+ Between-seasons fic set between seasons one and two, as the team settled into their new working dynamic after Jack leaves. They're so much closer and more comfortable with each other at the start of season two. How did that happen? I would love to see a little bit of it, whether it's working out the logistics of various team necessities (how did Gwen end up in charge? are there things that Jack used to do - like, say, pay the rent - that they have to figure out?), or the team going on a case together, or finding ways to comfort each other about Jack being gone, or just hanging out.

+ I love hurt/comfort, and I love Owen in either role. He's at his best when he's doing doctor things and worrying about his friends. But if you want to have something terrible happen to Owen so that he's forced into being the patient for a change, I'm here for it.

Turn: Washington's Spies
Edmund Hewlett
Treat, Trick

Hewlett! I love his decency and kindness and nerdiness; I love watching him go through the complex and twisty character arc that he undergoes in the show, losing everything including his own sense of himself, and eventually finding his way back to who he really is, but a better version of himself. I just really love Hewlett and would love anything about him.

Prompts:

+ AU where Hewlett stays at Whitehall. I was fascinated and delighted by the idea of Hewlett owning Whitehall, and then that lasted for 0.5 seconds before he sold it and hied over the horizon never to be seen on the North American continent again. But what if he'd stayed? Wouldn't a small town like Setauket be a nice place to look at the stars? I love the idea of Hewlett coming to Setauket as part of an occupying military force and then, reluctantly, becoming part of the community. And he called it "home" in season two. I want to see it be home for him, and Hewlett become a little less alone. (Obviously I do not need all of this in a Trick or Treat sized fic. Just a little snippet of Hewlett interacting with the townspeople, maybe, or having a party, or a quiet introspective piece at Whitehall, or anything of that nature. Maybe famous astronomers and scientists visit, and the townspeople are baffled yet proud that their little town is on the scientific map! If you want to do something Halloween-themed, maybe there's a costume ball at Whitehall.) If any of this involves getting back together with Anna, I would really enjoy that, but I don't need that for a happy ending; I liked his canon endgame pairing as well.

+ Anything Edmund/Anna. I love them and really, really wanted some resolution with them in season four. It could be sad - realizing that they don't have a future together. It could be happy, slowly putting their past betrayals behind them and finding out that they still care about each other. It could be exciting and completely AU - Anna showing up in New York again and Edmund having to hide her, say, or the two of them running into each other and saving each other's lives while they're both at the same battle in 4x09. Or you could just give me something from their canon timeline and relationship, too - even an outside POV on their relationship from, say, Richard or Mary or the maid.

+ Hurt/comfort aftermath for Hewlett's imprisonment in season two. He's obviously holding himself together with pure willpower when he goes to get Anna back from Simcoe. Does he collapse immediately after? Hold it together long enough to get back to Whitehall and then collapse. Give him some TLC, please - feel free to include Anna and any of the Woodhulls that you like.

+ Backstory. What did he think of Setauket when he first arrived? What were his earliest days at Whitehall like? Or go back even farther, to his childhood and young adulthood, when he first fell in love with the stars.

+ Canon-compliant aftermath. I would love to see Edmund meeting his future wife (Caroline Herschel) or anything from their relationship. Show me his new estate and observatory. Give him some happiness! Maybe he stays in touch with the Woodhulls, or they get back in touch with him, or need his help? Maybe he runs into someone else from the war days after he's back in Scotland?

+ Fantasy or sci-fi AUs, especially those that keep the canon setting but add some new elements, and especially if it involves Edmund being thrown into danger and having to team up with the spies on the other side against a worse threat. Give me the American Revolution being derailed by an alien invasion or a zombie apocalypse. Or werewolf!Edmund having to rely on the Culpers to keep his secret (or vice versa - maybe the Setauket gang are actually a werewolf pack and he finds out about it).

I hope you get many of these!

and when you scrape off the hard outer shell of jerk, you find that underneath it's gentle, caring doctor all the way down.

I think it may be more like gentle, caring doctor all the way until you hit the core of stubborn bastard, but the thing about the core of stubborn bastard is that he also cares.

... that is extremely valid and in fact is such a good point that I think I'm going to go up there and edit it into my character description.

Hooray!

Also, appreciate the fact that my signup is 2/3 Burn Gorman, although that may change if I add more fandoms, which is definitely on the table before signups end.

Even if you add more fandoms, I appreciate it immensely.

(You know what I can't believe Turn never did? A comet metaphor with Anna and Edmund. Close, bright, brief, and gone: some comets swing around every few years or decades, some never return within a lifetime; some never return at all. It's not like he's not associated with them. He's canonically named after Halley, whose periodic comet he once believed was evidence of a divinely ordered universe, he marries a woman who discovers eight comets herself. And Anna burned through his life, and perturbed his gravity, and vanished from his sky.)

How goes season 2?

Still catching up to where I was before, and still having a wonderful time. [edit] I can believe it, because a lot of people who aren't me like Joss Whedon, but I am deeply aggravated that Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog won the short-form dramatic Hugo in 2009 and "A Day in the Death" didn't even get a look-in.

When I watched this show back in 2008, the "Day in the Death/Dead Man Walking" arc was one of my favorite things that I had ever seen a sci-fi show do - and rewatching it again this year, I was both gratified and surprised to find that it still is.

It's excellent. It actually set off less of my PTSD than I had been braced for. (Could always be delayed-action, but I don't think so.) I can't know for certain how it would have struck me in 2008, but it is the sort of thing that would have stood a good chance of becoming one of my touchstones. I appreciate catching it now.

Oh, that IS a good metaphor!

Thank you! It was just suddenly right there.

Anyway, I think you're right with what you said earlier that they had to compress and cut short some of the character/relationship arcs because of the limitations of the final season, and theirs might have been one of the arcs that suffered for that.

I really do hope you get some kind of fix-it, which I would consider to be anything that addressed their relationship in the fourth season. It does stop short and not even in a way that feels like the random collisions and losses of real life: it just feels like a broken thread.

What if Ward was on the plane that crashed in the mountains, and came back presumed-dead 15 years later to a very different, jaded Danny who's been dealing with Harold all these years?

AUGH

....ooh I love the ideas of Danny and Colleen bonding through the Iron Fist power or Colleen or Misty being a dragon or having dragon powers. I was thinking about that great cracky cactus Defenders AU just the other day
