Dear Alternate Universe Exchange writer

(If any passersby want to join in, [community profile] auexchange signups close July 12!)

Thank you so much for making something for me! I love AUs, so I'm sure I'll love this.

My prompts/likes are for suggestions only. If you have a different idea for one of the requested tags, go for it!

General things I enjoy in fic:
Case fic. Slice of life. Characters hanging out together. Enemies/antagonists to friends. Hurt/comfort. Tortured together, or recovering afterwards. Trauma recovery. Witnessing the other character having nightmares or other trauma after-effects and learning about it that way. Characters being gentle with each other's damage (physical or emotional). Characters being all up in each other's space, especially if they're not actually a couple but are just That Weird about each other. Platonic bedsharing or sharing of other spaces (tents, hotel rooms, etc). Cuddling and gentle touching. Protectiveness. Characters getting badly hurt for someone else (taking a bullet, taking torture to spare them, etc) and the other character feeling terribly guilty about it and the first one not minding at all. Fever, delirium, head injuries, generally being dazed and floppy and out of it. Sex pollen with a focus on taking care of each other's emotional and physical needs, during and/or after. Desperate worry. Presumed dead. Actually dead and then magically healed/fixed/rescued from the afterlife. Handcuffed together. Trapped together. Hiding injuries/illness, not believing they're worth saving or being taken care of. Overworking themselves while recovering from injury or illness, and relapsing. Learning to be loved and to believe they're worthy of love. Families of choice.

Including canonical pairings is always fine!

General DNWs:
Permanent character death or terminal illness (presumed dead, miraculous healing, or characters canonically being ghosts/zombies/etc are all fine). References to real-world plagues currently happening (similar symptoms from a different cause are fine). Dark or downer endings - even if very dark things happen in a fic, I'd like to end on a note of hope.

Fandoms:

Iron Fist
Ward Meachum & Danny Rand
Ward Meachum & Colleen Wing
Ward Meachum & Danny Rand & Colleen Wing

Ward ends up in K'un Lun instead of Danny
This idea has fascinated me for a while. It seems less likely (compared to Danny) that he'd become the Iron Fist, but maybe that core of stubbornness that got him through twelve years of undead Harold gets turned to the goal of doing anything to get back to New York and save Joy from Harold, and the Iron Fist is a side effect of that. Does he become friends/adopted siblings with Davos in this universe? And what does he find once he gets back to New York? Maybe Danny has become Harold's badly abused protege in this 'verse, or maybe it's Joy. Harold is certainly not going to deal well with his supposedly dead son walking back into his life.

Characters become friends/allies earlier than canon
What if Ward and Danny (+ Colleen and/or Joy?) actually teamed up against Harold in early season one? I would love a scenario in which they all got on the same page much earlier: Ward and Colleen might unexpectedly become friends while getting Danny out of the mental hospital, or Ward makes a different choice about Danny earlier, or Danny finds out about Harold's abuse and decided to help - anything like that would be really fun for me. When I watched the show the first time, I wished everyone had been more in one place/on one page earlier in S1, so an AU in which that happened would be delightful.

Character comes into an inheritance with strange conditions
Canonically, Ward and Joy had to stay with the company in order to inherit, but what if Harold (being Harold) put something REALLY bizarre and/or cruel in his will? Such as forcing Ward to submit to medical experiments to give him superpowers, or get married to someone he doesn't want to marry, or ... the sky's the limit, really. This could also apply to Danny; maybe he discovers in the post-S1 era, when he comes back to town, that Harold had messed with his parents' will and he has to do something really weird or dangerous in order to have access to his 51% of Rand, if he wants it. This could also apply to Colleen -- maybe she discovers she is the beneficiary of some inheritance that requires her to go through a trap-filled labyrinth or become soul-bonded to a magic weapon, or something. Danny might also find himself in a similar situation if someone from K'un Lun leaves him something weird.

Dimension Travel to a Significantly Diverged Timeline
There are so many different ways their lives could have gone, and the idea that they could get to see some of these alternate versions of themselves is a really cool one to me. Maybe Ward has to deal with the AU world in which he really did kill Danny when Danny first arrived in New York, or Colleen encounters herself as a full member of the Hand ... or maybe it's a better world, one in which Danny's parents never died and Ward's dad died of cancer and didn't come back to torment him. Maybe it's a better world in which things are terrible in a different way: Danny's parents survived but Danny himself died in a car accident, for example, or hates Ward for something AU!Ward did to him. (I'd rather not have the story end with the characters permanently separated from their canon friends/world, however.)

Soulmates share a pain bond
Soulmates share a telepathic bond
Platonic Soulmate AU

What if Harold finds a way to bond Danny and Ward, to ensure their compliance if hurting/tormenting one affects the other? Or Danny healing Colleen creates a bond between them? Or Ward and Colleen turn out to have some kind of bond that's activated when they touch (or through some other weird thing that happens to them), to both of their dismay and distress. I'm taking "soulmate" in the loosest possible sense here; feel free to do likewise.

Like canon except that one character is a selkie
One character is a dragon

I really enjoy "character is secretly a mythological creature" AUs, with others finding out their secret and accepting them or helping them hide it. Danny as a dragon is the obvious one, but it doesn't have to be Danny. Maybe the Meachums are all weredragons and have been hiding it all these years, or perhaps Colleen was subjected to an experiment in the Hand to give her dragon powers that ended up turning her into one. Maybe Ward is a selkie who has been held prisoner by Harold all these years.

Bodyguard AU
Your choice of who is the bodyguard/who is guarded and why. Danny as the kung fu bodyguard of trust fund kid Ward? Colleen being sent by the Hand to guard Ward in a mostly-canon universe? Leather-clad bodyguard Ward being assigned to trust fund kid Danny?

Circus/Traveling Carnival AU
Quite possibly the only thing Ward would hate more than Danny coming back into his life as a magical kung fu monk is Danny being adopted by a traveling circus and showing up as a circus performer AND BRINGING HIS ENTIRE CIRCUS WITH HIM.

Dragon Rider AU
Weird West AU
1920s AU
Space Opera AU

Here are some total AU settings that look like a blast. Half the fun of this kind of AU for me is just seeing what the characters' new roles are and watching them fit into a different world, so give me all the superpowered kung-fu Western/dragonrider/Prohibition/IN SPACE shenanigans! I really adore h/c, so putting some in would make me very happy, but I'm also perfectly fine without it.

Torchwood
Owen Harper & Ianto Jones
Owen Harper/Ianto Jones
Owen Harper/Ianto Jones/Toshiko Sato
Gwen Cooper & Jack Harkness & Owen Harper & Ianto Jones & Toshiko Sato
Gwen Cooper/Jack Harkness/Owen Harper/Ianto Jones/Toshiko Sato
Gwen & Jack & Owen & Ianto & Toshiko & Beth Halloran

Canon-specific DNW: Including Tosh, Owen, or Ianto's deaths except to fix them. Owen's canonical undeath is fine, and the events surrounding their deaths can still happen (Tosh getting shot, CoE's general plot, etc), just without the actual death.

If you include any of the requested non-canon pairings, you can keep the canon ones (e.g. Jack/Ianto or Owen/Tosh); I am fine with all sorts of poly arrangements for these people, including unrequested combinations - in fact, I am basically fine with ANY pairings within the team as long as no one is left, at the end, feeling sad/abandoned/cheated-on. For the full-team poly option, I actually would be happiest something more awkward and ambiguous than just "everyone is having sex with each other and in an equal five-way relationship with each other" - loads of team cuddling with occasional sex, some kind of weird thing where they all had sex once for Torchwood reasons and now they're way more physically comfortable with each other, various interlacing poly relationships within the team, etc.

Also, any scenario featuring the entire team doesn't need to feature them all equally. I'd be fine if you focused more heavily on one relationship within the group, provided the others are there.

Owen Harper and Toshiko Sato live
Any sort of fixit for "Exit Wounds" would be very welcome. Especially with comfort and h/c afterwards. The end of the previous episode, with everyone out of the collapsed building, also lends itself very well to comfort afterwards if everything else hadn't happened immediately, so you could also go that way too.

Beth lives and joins the team
I loved Beth and I think she'd be such a fascinating addition to the team.

Character Journeys To The Underworld to Rescue Their Dead Friend
Maybe it's the team going down to get Owen, or Jack et al getting Owen and Tosh after "Exit Wounds", maybe even Jack and Gwen post-COE going down to get everybody back. Or a non-canonical death at any point during canon - perhaps this is part of how the team got so much closer between seasons one and two - or Ianto aimed too close to center mass and actually did kill Owen, or everyone got to the Weevil cage a little too late, or any of the other times someone could have died, but didn't.

Building a settlement on a frontier planet
This could be a complete AU, or maybe some/all of the team fell through the Rift and are now stuck on an alien planet and having to make the best of it. (If you go with that option, I'd prefer not to have the entire team separated at the end - either they're all there, or they get rescued or at last get back in touch with each other by the end.)

Worldwide Mass Magic Event Causes All Humans To Transform Into Assorted Mythical Creatures
And Torchwood is probably responsible. For purposes of this story you could just do it to the Torchwood team, or just some of the team, or only some of the planet (e.g. maybe scattered people in Cardiff are suddenly turning into mythical creatures and the team has to figure out why). I'm equally fine with having it fixed by the end, or not.

Working in a sanctuary for magical creatures
Instead of Torchwood locking up and/or shooting aliens, it's some kind of Welsh magic-animal sanctuary and Jack recruits various damaged people to help him with it, e.g. Owen is a veterinarian for magical creatures instead of a doctor, etc.

Everyone wakes up amnesiac on a spaceship
This could be a total AU in which they've always been in space, but is also entirely plausible for this to happen in actual canon, given the canonical existence of both amnesia drugs and spaceships. Anyway, the team (or some subset of the team) waking up on a spaceship and having to figure out WTAF is going on would be delightful.

Characters choose to get soulbonded for reasons
Maybe one of the conditions of working for Torchwood is some kind of soulbond. Maybe someone (or the entire team) has to get soulbonded to Owen to bring him back from undeath, or there's some other Torchwood reason why a soulbond is plot-necessary. I'd enjoy this with any combination of characters.

Being Married to Each Other is a Job Requirement in Their Line of Work
"Welcome to Torchwood, here is your marriage license." Perhaps some old loophole in the Torchwood charter requires every new member to marry someone else on the team, or to marry Jack, or to join the others in a specially-commissioned-by-Queen-Victory group marriage. Do they all have to live together in a compound big beach house or boarding house or something? I love forced intimacy as a trope, and this is great for it. Actual consummation of marriage not required (although it can be!).

One character is a dragon
Character is Secretly an Android AU
Like canon except that one character is a selkie

Character of your choice. Maybe this is Ianto's big secret instead of Lisa: he's really a robot himself, or a mythological creature? Maybe the reason why Owen is such a dick to people is to stop them from discovering his big secret, and then he gets shot and they find out he's not what they thought all along? Maybe Tosh is from a dragon family quietly getting along in the real world, or Gwen comes from a long line of Welsh selkies?

Alternate First Meetings
We saw one version of how they each met Jack and were recruited to Torchwood, but what if it went differently? Maybe it's only slightly canon-divergent; I would love everyone meeting a grieving Ianto right after the fall of Torchwood One, for example - maybe Tosh and Owen, sifting through the rubble under Jack's orders, find him in the ruins of Torchwood One with Lisa's body. Or maybe some of them are swapped into another character's role (e.g. Tosh is a grieving widow and Owen is a UNIT prisoner).

Characters become friends/allies earlier than canon
Generally I'm just thinking ... what if some individual combinations of the team, or the team as a whole, bonded more closely with each other early in season one, or after some of the traumatic events they went through early in the series?

On the run from the law
In the canon setting or a different one. This lends itself to all kinds of bonding-under-pressure and hurt/comforty scenarios that I would love to receive.

Dragon Rider AU
Circus/Traveling Carnival AU
Characters Are Soulbonded to Psychic Wolves

Here are some further AUs for your inspiration pleasure. Do whatever you like with it - half the fun for me of this kind of AU is seeing how the characters fit into their new roles in the alternate setting. I really adore h/c, so putting some in would make me very happy, but I'm also perfectly fine without it.

Agent Carter
Peggy Carter & Daniel Sousa & Jack Thompson
Peggy Carter & Jack Thompson
Peggy Carter/Daniel Sousal/Jack Thompson
Peggy Carter/Jack Thompson

Canon-specific DNW: Please ignore Endgame and any new Agents of SHIELD canon as well.

Canon-typical Peggy/Daniel or other pairings are fine. Also, I've requested these characters a bunch, so you can look through past letters for inspiration as well.

Agent Carter: Coffee Shop Manager Jack Thompson
I don't know who nominated this (it wasn't me) but I must have laughed for half a minute straight when I saw this. Yes, please DO put him in charge of a coffee shop and put everyone else in it and just make him deal with impossible-to-control barista Peggy who is possibly a spy on the side.

Female character disguises herself as male relative to join the military
Instead of joining the SSR as herself, Peggy takes over her dead brother's identity. Does she have more opportunities for spying and career advancement this way? Does she keep her Michael persona after the war? Maybe in this AU, she meets Jack and/or Daniel during the war, in her Michael guise; feel free to set the story at any point in the war or afterwards.

Characters Met While Fighting in WWII
Like the prompt says! Peggy probably went all over with the SSR, so she could easily have met either of them. Maybe Jack was posted to Europe with Daniel, or vice versa.

Werewolves
Like canon except that one character is a selkie
One character is a dragon

I really enjoy "character is secretly a mythological creature" AUs, with others finding out their secret and accepting them or helping them hide it. It'd be cool to see something like that in a 1940s setting! I would be happy with any of the requested characters being secretly mythological: maybe they all find out that werewolves exist when Peggy gets bitten by one, or Jack comes from a family of old-money dragons, or Daniel is a selkie who is only disabled on land because seals don't really use their legs to swim with anyway.

Weird Adventures While Living Together In A Retirement Home AU
Look, just give me any combination of Peggy, Jack, and Daniel (plus any other characters you want to throw in there, including modern MCU ones like Sharon, Fury, etc) and give them some bizarre things to investigate, and I will be THERE.

Bodyguard AU
I am especially partial to the idea of Peggy as Jack's bodyguard in a modern AU (perhaps he's a politician or celebrity?) but other variants are also welcome.

Snowed in at a Haunted Hotel
This would be amazing. Jack would be so incredibly grouchy at having to deal with ghosts as well as having to deal with Peggy investigating ghosts.

Requested character(s) are teachers at a superhero high school/college

OMG YES
