I have a present for penguin!fic fans

(All, um, none? of you on my friend list? But seriously, this is cute.)

Okay ... somehow, I have actually managed to make it through two years in this fandom without reading penguin!fic. Until tonight. Because one such story was rec'd on [livejournal.com profile] sgastoryfinders, and it was by an author I like, and I was all, "Oh hell," and clicked on it, and it was so freakin' cute, and there goes my penguin-free streak in fandom. So, if you're a John/Rodney pairing person, and you haven't read [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan's Antarctic Drift, go forth and read. SO. DAMN. CUTE.

And this got me to scan in a photo from a recent issue of National Geographic. I swear to God I have not tampered with this photo in any way. This is EXACTLY how it ran in the August 2007 issue of National Geographic.

Yes, you read that right. Rodney the emperor penguin.

And I can actually SEE the scene, with Rodney!penguin all tranquilized and limp, and the hapless biologist trying to radio-collar him while furious John!penguin attacks his ankles with his useless penguin beak. And of course, Rodney thinks the radio collar is really cool, and tries to figure out how it works, and John's all bristling and glowering at human photographers taking pictures of them from the other side of the ice floe ....

Ahaha! *sporfles*

Kudos to you for digging that out! I might still have a slot left for the [livejournal.com profile] 14valentines project, so. Ahem. *coughs*

Hey ... does a person have to do 14 different things for 14 Valentines, or can you do just one? I've never really been able to figure it out from the FAQ ...

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
From a slash or a gen perspective, the idea of overprotective-penguin-John is just killing me! Because he would totally attack anyone who "hurt" Rodney, but I can't imagine that a penguin would really be that effective in a combat situation. (Although I suppose I wouldn't want to be attacked by one.)

I *loves* penguin gic! I loved the one you linked to having read it some time ago, and it's so darned good I just sat here and read it again. I think this time of the year is perfect for penguin!fic. Rodney the Penguin! Oh, how perfect! And his little camera too! Sweet! :)
ext_1981: (Wiseguy-Vinnie moodlit)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't it cute? I love how the Rodney penguin in the article is completely unconcerned by the camera on his back, because it's just so perfect that Rodney (the actual Rodney) would be mostly interested in how the thing works, not whether it's going to slow him down as he swims.

John!penguin: *smacks him with flipper*

Penguin!fic!?

This fandom...this...there are no words.

(The fic was too cute, though, and the National Geo scan is hysterical, as is your imagined scenario XD)

It's an actual GENRE in this fandom! Apparently, the story is that one of the very first influential slash stories in the fandom was one in which John and Rodney got turned into penguins and had lots of sex as penguins, and it kind of ... caught on. But, seriously, this is THE most crack-happy fandom I have EVER been in. I primarily read [livejournal.com profile] sgastoryfinders just for the requests, such as "The one in which John and Rodney get turned into walls" (an actual story ... and actually pretty cute, I must say).

I think SGA fandom has totally recalibrated my crack threshhold. I remember that one of the very first SGA stories that I read was a gen one in which John accidentally got turned into a dog by an Ancient device, and it completely weirded me out. Now? I don't think I'd give it a second glance. *g*

There's a reason we loves us our penguin!fic in this zany, wonderful, cracked-out fandom! I'm glad you joined the madness. ;)

[identity profile] foliogal.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I've never been in a fandom with *this much crack*. When I first ran across it, I was like...wha?? But now I've embraced it. And penguin!fic is kind of my ultra-comfort fic in this fandom. It just does it for me. As you say, this is a zany, wonderful, cracked-out fandom, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

You know, I still haven't read penguin!fic but that is fantastic and hilarious and now I want to read that scene so bad. Oh, silly penguins. (and OF COURSE Rodney would think the collar was really cool and John would attack the humans and...AW)

Also, SGA is by far the crackiest fandom ever.

It's the crackiest fandom I've ever seen! I've been in fandoms where canon was nothing but crack (Red Dwarf springs instantly to mind) and the fanfic was nowhere near this cracky. It's hilarious.

*blinks* Penguin fic? I don't think I'm ready for that...Not sure I ever will be. But...this is a real genre??? Whoa.

Very cute picture of a penguin above. :)

LOL, I think it's an acquired taste. *g* It is a cute penguin, though!

[identity profile] vecturist.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Very cute! I actaully saw the National Geographic special on PBS (I think it was something like 'Emperors of the Ice')the image is from - the Rodney is supposed to be Rodney Dangerfield because of a couple of his head and flipper movements, but they'd work for McKay too...

I have a weak spot for penguins - a couple friends of mine do research down in Antartica (global-warming related) and have lots of fun penguin stories. Apparently the penguins are prety fearless around humans unless you start messing with the eggs or chicks - then they get very protective - someone in the group was checking egg health and looked like an IV drug user from all the bruises and pecking...

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, Rodney Dangerfield eh? Well, it *could* work for McKay ... :D

That's really cool. I'd love to go to Antarctica sometime. (No, really, I would!)

Rodney. The Emperor Penguin. Obviously, the fanfic gods are smiling on us, as well as the folks at National Geographic being fanboys. There can be little other explanation.

(I've worked with NG photogs before; they're a geeky lot.)
