Meme?
The week's classes are done! The line edits on my novel are done! \o/ (Now I just have the hard part - rewriting the parts that need to be rewritten. Which I have exactly two days to do. This weekend will be busy, but at least it's the kind of busy that can be accomplished while wearing a bathrobe and having a cat on me.)
I would love to do something creative but I am really too brainfried, and I've been doing enough art in class that I don't really feel like doing art. So how about a fandom meme I saw somewhere. This one stretches my comfort zone a bit ...
Give me a character and I'll tell you two people I ship them with like them paired with.
(This may be purely semantic, but I changed it a bit because I don't think it's wholly accurate to say that I ship characters in most cases. I just like some pairings better than others.)
Any character from anything, provided I'm at least somewhat familiar with it. And you may get a lot of "no pairing!" answers, but I think for most characters I do have at least one preferred ship, particularly for those who have a canon ship ...
Let's see if anyone's around tonight!
Closing the meme now, because I probably should be thinking about bed, and will be too busy tomorrow. Thanks for playing with me! :)

Should probably pick someone who interacts with more than two or three people in their canons. <_< Any nontraditional pairings-up for Elizabeth?

Elizabeth I can do! (Although someone asking for an SGA character on the LJ side just made my brain fall down a hole with both her and Keller, but I assume you mean the WC variants on both of those.) My pairing for El is probably obvious, though. And I don't really ship her with anyone other than Peter, because, well ... Peter/El. 'nuff said. (Although I do have a thing for Peter/Neal. A completely irrational thing, and my brain has to do a hard sideways twist into AU territory because a) Elizabeth, and b) anklet, but.) So yeah, I think it's pretty much Peter/El all the way for me. I don't really do Elizabeth/Neal, even as part of an OT3, because I don't really see it in canon. (I can pair them up in AUs, but it still feels like a stretch.)
no subject
XD Haven't you written at least one AU Elizabeth/Neal series?
I have to admit, I kinda want to see Elizabeth/Diana, but I think that's more of an "I want to mess with canon" than "I have any investment in the pairing as a pairing". Diana/Sara would also be excellent, though mostly for Neal's wet-cat face.
How much would I have to bribe fandom to write Elizabeth Burke/Elizabeth Weir?
...I have four ships that I actually ship. Two of those are buried several AUs deep from their various canons. One of them is a canon ship, and the other, I only ship so long as it does not result in actual romance. I feel your pain.

I can't really see Elizabeth/Diana; however, Diana/Sara does click in my head -- that one, I could see. (And heh, yeah, Neal's face would be GREAT.)
How much would I have to bribe fandom to write Elizabeth Burke/Elizabeth Weir?
... well, I don't think there's a bribe high enough to get THIS part of fandom to do it, but I suppose it depends on who you try to bribe. XD
This makes me wonder how much crossover fic exists between characters with the same first name. If pronouns are a problem in writing slash, how much worse does it get when the first names are the same too? Jack O'Neill/Jack Harkness? Sara Ellis/Sarah Manning? Sara Ellis/Sarah Manning/Sarah Walker! XD XD Peter Burke/Peter Bishop [Fringe]? River Song/River Tam! PLEASE MAKE ME STOP.
ETA: Sam Winchester/Sam Tyler/Sam Carter/Sam Beckett/Sam Wilson! Nominated for most confusing sex scene in the history of fanfic! (damn it writers, find some new names already)

Friends and I at one point had cause to determine that the group name for Jacks was "a confusion of Jacks", and the group name for Sams is "a repression of Sams". And I have been able to write – in nonromantic shenanigan times – Jack Harkness and Jack Bristow, Jack Harkness and Jack O'Neill, Sam Tyler and Sam Carter, Jack Harkness and Jack Sparrow... there may be others that I'm forgetting. (Harkness and Sparrow is just fun.)
Clearly we need some kind of game show where all the characters have to team up according to name, and complete some kind of objective. The Jacks would fail so very, very hard at the starting gate because they'd be incapable of working out a chain of command. I feel like the Sams would actually do pretty well for themselves.
no subject
... ahahaha WOW. This is so very appropriate.
Jack Harkness and Jack Sparrow is really an amazing thought, in either the romantic or non-romantic sense. (Well, let's face it, pairing Jack Harkness with anyone is entirely within the realm of plausibility.)
no subject
*...I can see a non-sexual, not-anything-you'd-regard-as-romantic pairing between Jack Harkness and Diana Barrigan that was mostly founded on mutual snark and Diana's continuing amusement at hanging out with someone as pretty as Neal and watching Neal get huffy about it. And upholding the law/defending the public good in their own v. special ways.

Hm, how about Natasha?
And Clint? (My brain is on MCU, apparently)
no subject
Natasha/Bucky is my go-to pairing in the comicsverse. I absolutely love them and am still terribly angry about what Marvel did to them (and still holding out a fragile thread of hope that they plan to fix it, although Marvel's track record in this area is truly dismal).
In the movieverse, I don't really have a solid pairing for Natasha. Nat/Steve doesn't really do it for me, for whatever reason. Nat/Clint doesn't really interest me all that much (mostly because I have no particular feelings on Clint one way or another) but I think this might be the most canonically plausible pairing. I would love to see movie-canon Nat/Bucky, but don't expect it'll actually happen because their dynamic would replicate moveverse Nat/Clint too closely. I also like Natasha as part of various moresomes (Nat/Steve/Bucky/Sam; Nat/Tony/Pepper). In addition to that, Natasha is a character I would love to have some femslash pairings for, except there aren't really any female MCU characters that have that happy "click!" feeling in my brain when I put them together. About the closest is that I've read some Natasha/Pepper fic I really liked ... and I think Nat/Pepper is also the only exception to my otherwise ironclad "thou shalt not break up Tony and Pepper" commandment. :D
But really, movie!Natasha is still a character in search of a pairing for me. I would also be very happy with her as an asexual person who uses sex appeal for work, but is otherwise happy to snuggle platonically with her close friends. ♥
Clint ... I am hoping the new Avengers movie will give me Clint feels, because of the various Avengers, he's probably the one I have the least feelings for. And therefore no real shipping feels either, though as noted above, I could see Nat/Clint.
no subject
This! This, so much! Because, like you, I actually don't see anyone with movieverse-Natasha, and this would be the perfect explanation. I honestly don't think Natasha needs a partner, and I'm not even sure she wants one.
Also? Very much in favour of you commandment. ;o)
As for Clint ... I see his friendship with Natasha as far more beautiful than a romantic relationship. This is something that Auburn and me touched upon in our story: They'd die for each other, but they wouldn't have sex with each other.
no subject
In general, I'm happier with Clint/Nat as platonic than romantic, though I would be completely unsurprised if it goes to a romantic place. Which, well, ditto most character relationships, honestly. I think Tony/Pepper is the only relationship in the MCU that I can honestly say I unambiguously adore as a sexual relationship. Most of the others -- Steve/Bucky, say -- I am glad are probably solidly platonic in canon, regardless of what I might enjoy pairing-wise in fandom. :D I was thoroughly delighted that Steve and Natasha stayed platonic in Cap2. I expect canon will probably go in a Steve/Sharon direction due to the comics, and I am already bracing myself for the backlash of Sharon hate that will no doubt ensue when she gets in the way of not just one but TWO popular pairings.
no subject
As for potential movie pairings ... I really hope they don't give Steve an immediate love-interest. I'm perfectly fine with him not being in a relationship. He needs to sort out his life and find Bucky first, at any rate.
Bucky/Natasha would be interesting, especially since Stan himself expressed an interest in it. Maybe the writers are listening? Though, that brings me back to Natasha not really needing anyone, and I can't see why she would fall into bed with Bucky. Not that he's not interesting/smart/loyal/attractive enough, but ... She's her own person. She doesn't need a partner to complete her.

Steve/Peggy also works just fine for me, although generally that one has undertones of sad/doomed. (Well, so does Steve/Bucky, I guess.) I don't really like romantic-with-kids Steve/Peggy, but rather, tragically-doomed-through-the-years Steve/Peggy. See also: Steve/Bucky. (oh god, Steve)
For whatever reason, I really don't connect with any of the other big Steve pairings. I do like Steve as part of various OT3/OT4s, though - Peggy/Steve/Bucky, Steve/Sam/Bucky, Steve/Sam/Natasha/Bucky, etc.
no subject
And, in my heart's heart I'm especially with you over the Steve/Peggy/Bucky, because, damn, that has the potential for wonderful dynamics, for a lot of tension (not just sexual) and for absolute doom and tragedy. It's really kind of perfect.
I don't think I ever said, but I loved, loved, loved your Steve/Peggy/Bucky story. It was wonderfully achy, yet hopeful and so very tender, even if it was heartbreaking. Gorgeous, like all of your writing is, but this one really stayed with me, because you had such an excellent hand with Peggy's condition.

... but yeah, that's a really good point. I would absolutely LOVE to see some Peggy/Bucky bonding in canon, over guns or their shared Steve love or anything else. Perhaps I will have to write some, because there actually is about a year or so in which they could have, if not gotten to know each other well, then at least had some degree of friendly interaction. I really like the idea of the two of them having sharpshooter bonding sessions, either in the past or the present.

Beyond that, I think my preference for Sara is all in the femslash direction.
I find Sara/Peter rather hot (thanks a lot WC 4x07), but don't really see them (particularly Peter) going for it.
no subject
I keep thinking I would like Sara/Diana if only I had something to go on. They did team up a little in "Under the Radar" (I think. I get confused), but not much else. (I think. I get confused.) 9 times out of 10, I'm a person who needs something in canon to spark me.
My Neal/Sara endgame is not quite like yours, but it's not a conventional happy ever after either. In my happy place, they're together, in a committed relationship, but maybe it's an open relationship. Maybe it's not. Or Maybe they never both to get married. Maybe they're doing something completely different. I want to find a way to satisfy the shipper in me while still staying true to the characters, but your scenario may make the most sense.

I have come across quite a few where they have settled down and have babies. It is sweet but I just don't see that as ever being a possibility.

I really want fic with Neal and Sara running around chasing bad guys.

(And I am going to fall into Harry Potter house terminology to explain this. I AM SO SORRY.)
I see Peggy as basically an archetypical lightside Slytherin. She's driven, ambitious, rigidly moral but not conventionally moral, loyal to a handful of people, otherwise willing to pull whatever strings and push whatever buttons she has to in order to get what she wants. She loves adrenaline and danger. In her time period, if she'd been born a man, she'd be a soldier, win a ton of combat accolades, and probably end up a five-star general or a president. Peggy's entire ethos is built around "FUCK YOU, IM'A DO THIS THING".
Ellen, on the other hand, is pretty much a Hufflepuff. Her driving motivation is loyalty and affection for people. Even after literally catching James in the act of standing over a man he killed, she's still not willing to unambiguously tell Neal that he did it; but she's also not willing to look the other way when James appears to have done things that hurt others. She appears to have devoted her entire life, at least her younger life, to being there for Neal and his mom. Her loyalty and affection for Neal is such that she accepts his friends and doesn't hold his con-artist lifestyle against him. Ellen is very much a bridge-builder and community-builder.
I think Peggy and Ellen would respect each other as fellow fighters and otherwise completely and absolutely fail to get each other. They would simply have nothing to talk about. If they'd both been born in the same era in a sci-fi AU, Ellen would stay behind to defend the battlements while Peggy would be out fucking shit up in mecha armor, and neither of them would be able to understand the other's choices at all. (Ellen, I think, would have more sympathy/empathy for Peggy than Peggy would have for Ellen, because Peggy is not really wired to put herself in other people's places, and Ellen is. That doesn't make her a bad person. It's just how she is.)
... I also think one of the reasons why Hydra was able to grow within SHIELD is because Peggy is not actually that much of a people person. She is crazy smart and fantastically driven, but not really good at managing people, or capable of recognizing the finer points of the people under her. Her successor, Nick Fury, actually does have that skill set -- he's a pretty sharp people manager from a particularly goal-oriented, rather than empathy-oriented, direction. Peggy, on the other hand, was able to draw like-minded people behind her because she was so dedicated that she inspired others simply by the strength of her own convictions. (She also would have made a kickass cult leader.) But, while she could inspire and guide, she couldn't really recognize when others had goals different from her own, and enough guile to hide it.

It's tired and I'm late. If none of this sense, forgive.

... hahaha, okay true. XD (Though I think I generally see it as the kind of trainwreck relationship that is always teetering on the brink of disaster. On the other hand, see also PETER AND NEAL, the original train wreck.)
SPACE COLONY AUs FTW. \o/
I have had 3 glasses of wine in an attempt to make myself sleepy, so I'm not entirely sure of my own coherence right now either.
no subject
I feel like Peggy and Ellen running an embattled space colony would be an AU worth reading, whether with original serial numbers or with serial numbers filed off. Though I also have to admit that I think my headcanon for Ellen's characterization is one of those "I shuffle canon off into a closet and replace it with something fitting the same basic outlines" things, and my headcanon for Peggy's characterization is a blank cardboard cutout with "CHARACTER GOES HERE" scribbled on it.
I want to end this with a line that just says "SCIENCE!!", but I'm fairly sure that's the wrong response.
