Meme?

The week's classes are done! The line edits on my novel are done! \o/ (Now I just have the hard part - rewriting the parts that need to be rewritten. Which I have exactly two days to do. This weekend will be busy, but at least it's the kind of busy that can be accomplished while wearing a bathrobe and having a cat on me.)

I would love to do something creative but I am really too brainfried, and I've been doing enough art in class that I don't really feel like doing art. So how about a fandom meme I saw somewhere. This one stretches my comfort zone a bit ...

Give me a character and I'll tell you two people I ship them with like them paired with.

(This may be purely semantic, but I changed it a bit because I don't think it's wholly accurate to say that I ship characters in most cases. I just like some pairings better than others.)

Any character from anything, provided I'm at least somewhat familiar with it. And you may get a lot of "no pairing!" answers, but I think for most characters I do have at least one preferred ship, particularly for those who have a canon ship ...

Let's see if anyone's around tonight!

Closing the meme now, because I probably should be thinking about bed, and will be too busy tomorrow. Thanks for playing with me! :)

I'm tempted to say "Keller" just because I'm not really interested in pairings and I'm apparently feeling snarky. But. Uh. Roku?

Should probably pick someone who interacts with more than two or three people in their canons. <_< Any nontraditional pairings-up for Elizabeth?

Is there another Roku I should be aware of? ...am I completely forgetting a Roku in – ohh, no, you mean Keller and Elizabeth when you say "the WC variants on both of those", NEVER MIND, MY BRAIN FUNCTIONS.

XD Haven't you written at least one AU Elizabeth/Neal series?

I have to admit, I kinda want to see Elizabeth/Diana, but I think that's more of an "I want to mess with canon" than "I have any investment in the pairing as a pairing". Diana/Sara would also be excellent, though mostly for Neal's wet-cat face.

How much would I have to bribe fandom to write Elizabeth Burke/Elizabeth Weir?

...I have four ships that I actually ship. Two of those are buried several AUs deep from their various canons. One of them is a canon ship, and the other, I only ship so long as it does not result in actual romance. I feel your pain.

Any bribe would probably be higher than I was willing to pay anyway, given that I don't care that much. XD

Friends and I at one point had cause to determine that the group name for Jacks was "a confusion of Jacks", and the group name for Sams is "a repression of Sams". And I have been able to write – in nonromantic shenanigan times – Jack Harkness and Jack Bristow, Jack Harkness and Jack O'Neill, Sam Tyler and Sam Carter, Jack Harkness and Jack Sparrow... there may be others that I'm forgetting. (Harkness and Sparrow is just fun.)

Clearly we need some kind of game show where all the characters have to team up according to name, and complete some kind of objective. The Jacks would fail so very, very hard at the starting gate because they'd be incapable of working out a chain of command. I feel like the Sams would actually do pretty well for themselves.

I think I decided that the only person you couldn't pair Jack up with (you know, setting aside obvious conflicts like incompatible orientation*) was The Todd from Scrubs, because Jack would keep flirting and making innuendo, and Todd would go "Yeaaahh!" and high-five him and never actually follow through on anything. And Jack would just keeping getting more and more direct and explicit, eventually being like "No, I am literally suggesting that we go back to your apartment and have sex," and Todd would be like "Yeahh!" and high-five him like he'd just made a brilliant double-entendre.

*...I can see a non-sexual, not-anything-you'd-regard-as-romantic pairing between Jack Harkness and Diana Barrigan that was mostly founded on mutual snark and Diana's continuing amusement at hanging out with someone as pretty as Neal and watching Neal get huffy about it. And upholding the law/defending the public good in their own v. special ways.

Ooooooooh, thou shall not tempt me. ;o)

Hm, how about Natasha?

And Clint? (My brain is on MCU, apparently)

I would also be very happy with her as an asexual person who uses sex appeal for work, but is otherwise happy to snuggle platonically with her close friends

This! This, so much! Because, like you, I actually don't see anyone with movieverse-Natasha, and this would be the perfect explanation. I honestly don't think Natasha needs a partner, and I'm not even sure she wants one.

Also? Very much in favour of you commandment. ;o)

As for Clint ... I see his friendship with Natasha as far more beautiful than a romantic relationship. This is something that Auburn and me touched upon in our story: They'd die for each other, but they wouldn't have sex with each other.

Yes, you should! I'll be on the sideline, bringing you tea and biscuits. ;o)

As for potential movie pairings ... I really hope they don't give Steve an immediate love-interest. I'm perfectly fine with him not being in a relationship. He needs to sort out his life and find Bucky first, at any rate.
Bucky/Natasha would be interesting, especially since Stan himself expressed an interest in it. Maybe the writers are listening? Though, that brings me back to Natasha not really needing anyone, and I can't see why she would fall into bed with Bucky. Not that he's not interesting/smart/loyal/attractive enough, but ... She's her own person. She doesn't need a partner to complete her.

I like your obvious answer (obviously) and I'm very much with you on the non-married-with-kids Steve/Peggy.

And, in my heart's heart I'm especially with you over the Steve/Peggy/Bucky, because, damn, that has the potential for wonderful dynamics, for a lot of tension (not just sexual) and for absolute doom and tragedy. It's really kind of perfect.

I don't think I ever said, but I loved, loved, loved your Steve/Peggy/Bucky story. It was wonderfully achy, yet hopeful and so very tender, even if it was heartbreaking. Gorgeous, like all of your writing is, but this one really stayed with me, because you had such an excellent hand with Peggy's condition.

I feel the stirrings for a Steve/Peggy/Bucky story myself, so it's so good to see that I'm not alone in liking their dynamic. I just watched TFA again last night, and it struck me that Bucky and Peggy actualy have something in common (besides their love for Steve): They're both excellent shots. I mean, how much do you want to bet that Peggy is a sniper as well? Because the shot she fired through that cab in NYC, killing the driver? That was some damn precision shooting. I would love to explore that in a story, or see that explored.

I'm not asking for the meme, as I can see it's closed. I am just laughing at the irony that is life. I was trying so hard to sleep, before finally giving up and hoping that someone might be online. And, lo, we were two ships passing in the night.

veleda_k: Neal and Sara from White Collar (White Collar: Neal/Sara caught)

[personal profile] veleda_k 2014-07-19 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
Peter/Sara is of my top AU ships. But given fandom's interest in writing Peter with anyone who isn't Neal or Elizabeth (and Elizabeth is frequently just by default) combined with interest in writing Sara at all, but especially apart from Neal... I don't like my chances.

I keep thinking I would like Sara/Diana if only I had something to go on. They did team up a little in "Under the Radar" (I think. I get confused), but not much else. (I think. I get confused.) 9 times out of 10, I'm a person who needs something in canon to spark me.

My Neal/Sara endgame is not quite like yours, but it's not a conventional happy ever after either. In my happy place, they're together, in a committed relationship, but maybe it's an open relationship. Maybe it's not. Or Maybe they never both to get married. Maybe they're doing something completely different. I want to find a way to satisfy the shipper in me while still staying true to the characters, but your scenario may make the most sense.

I really like your thoughts on Neal & Sara. "I want Sara as a career lady, and Neal as a .... whatever he is, who may even live in separate cities, but definitely have a Thing and very happily resume their Thing whenever they're together." I think there could be very happy that way. It is too bad that there aren't fics for that.

I have come across quite a few where they have settled down and have babies. It is sweet but I just don't see that as ever being a possibility.

veleda_k: Sara From White Collar (White Collar: Sara calls bullshit)

[personal profile] veleda_k 2014-07-21 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'll admit I can't see Sara with a kid at all. Baby fic has become a much bigger thing in the Neal/Sara section of fandom recently, which despite not being my cup of tea, I actually consider a good thing. (I will not bore you with my essay on the history of Neal/Sara as a ship. I try not to spring that on the unsuspecting.) But that kind of stereotypical domesticity never feels right for Sara, or Neal for that matter. (I think the main difference is that Sara knows she doesn't want it, while Neal has convinced himself that he does.)

I really want fic with Neal and Sara running around chasing bad guys.

Ahaha, admittedly I have no head for MCU characterizations at all, but you say all that up above like it isn't reason to stick them together. (I feel like I have other things I could say about points of intersection between characters, but I'm not sure my brain is working well enough to pin them down.) Still, can you tell me you don't want to see the SF AU in which Ellen is running the colony because she's the one who can keep this thrown-together-by-circumstances enclave more or less functional, and Peggy is out mobilizing the expeditionary forces, and then they come home and have drinks together and try to figure out how in hell they wound up in charge of this fiasco? They could be the Elizabeth Weir and John Sheppard of... mecha... AU... land.

It's tired and I'm late. If none of this sense, forgive.

[personal profile] magibrain 2014-07-19 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think at this point I'm just wording at the screen because if I go to sleep I have to admit that the day is over.

I feel like Peggy and Ellen running an embattled space colony would be an AU worth reading, whether with original serial numbers or with serial numbers filed off. Though I also have to admit that I think my headcanon for Ellen's characterization is one of those "I shuffle canon off into a closet and replace it with something fitting the same basic outlines" things, and my headcanon for Peggy's characterization is a blank cardboard cutout with "CHARACTER GOES HERE" scribbled on it.

I want to end this with a line that just says "SCIENCE!!", but I'm fairly sure that's the wrong response.

I would say that I would totally write this, but I am at this moment considering the possibility that the damn Petra fic might need to be a novella or a short novel, so I think I may be overbooked on WC-inspired SF wackiness.

(I say, now. Check back tomorrow and I'll probably have a text file for it with no recollection of having created it.)
