Legend of Korra: episodes 1 & 2

As noted yesterday, the first two episodes of Legend of Korra are free on iTunes for USians.

What do I think?

I LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

Seriously, it was such a thrill to have new A:tLA again! I was grinning like a loon through all the little nods to the previous series and all the beautiful visual shinies. KATARA! And Lin Bei Fong - I love her! (And I love that she has Toph's last name! I guess we have no way of knowing for sure if the Earth Kingdom is patronymic, but I think there's every reason to expect they probably are, which hints that either Toph was a single mom or, at the very least, an extremely stubborn one who refused to yield one iota of her identity. *g*)

I adore Korra's character design! She's got muscles! She really looks athletic and physically strong, not waiflike at all.

The family dynamics between Tenzin and his wife and kids (and Katara!) are really wonderful. I love how grounded in family this series looks like it's going to be, with Korra having two living parents as well as a loving surrogate family with Tenzin. In a way this makes the writers' job harder -- it's a whole different dynamic when your kid characters are struggling to make their way alone in a hostile world, rather than having powerful adults to fall back on -- but on the other hand, it creates an entirely different feeling than the first series. The first time, we were exploring a brand-new world along with the kids. This time, we're returning to a familiar world, and Korra is very thoroughly grounded in that world.

I'm tentatively liking the other main cast members, Korra's teammates, the brothers (whose names I can't remember). I wish the romance wasn't quite so heavily signposted, but the first series did that too, so it's not like it's anything new. And I like sibling relationships a lot, and this series is giving us lots to choose from -- not just the brothers whatstheirnames, but also Tenzin's kids, and Tenzin and Lin Bei Fong for that matter (being the children of Team Avatar, I'm sure they must have grown up together!). It's also interesting that one brother is a firebender and one is an earthbender -- presumably their parents were a blended family, or else one is adopted (but I'm leaning towards the former explanation). Also, didn't the guy in charge of the gym (Touza? something like that?) bend air? Either more airbenders survived, or the show has loosened up on the biology-is-destiny thing a little bit (which I kinda hope so). Anyway ... INTERESTED!

Right now the political conflict in the series feels a bit superficial, more like window dressing than a fully realized part of the series yet. But it's only been two episodes, and a lot has been crammed into them. I can't wait for MOOOOOORE. *bounce*

I think the gym manager was an earth bender--he was only lifting the rock weights out of the way and I didn't see any wind motions.

It's sooo good! I really love it! I still haven't finished watching ATLA (only up to ep 6) but my lack of background didn't impede my understanding too much, I think.
