sholio: sun on winter trees (Meredith Jeannie)

Not home yet, but no longer on the road

Back at my sister's place from the New England road trip -- and flying back to Alaska tomorrow. Where it is supposed to be (*sob*) snowing!

But we've had so much fun. I'm amazed how much we actually managed to pack into only five days: exploring Vermont mountains and Maine's coast, wandering about in cool little rural towns, buying apples and fudge from roadside vendors, investigating (nearly deserted) historical sites along the St. Lawrence River on the Ontario side, driving around farm country in Quebec. We ate at a bunch of nifty little local restaurants and diners; the only time we deigned to set foot in a chain store was one morning when we figured that we had to have coffee and donuts at a Tim Hortons because you can't go to Canada without stopping at a Tim Hortons -- it just isn't done!

I only wish I'd been able to do this a little later in the fall, when the trees were really turning colors, because as it was, the only place we really saw nice fall colors was along the Canada border in Maine. But it was still a lovely trip, and I ended up with a list of places I'd love to go back and see, sometime when I have more time to do so -- particularly downtown Quebec (I'd put the accent mark in there, but I can't figure out how), which is gorgeous and European-looking and really sucks to drive through at rush hour, but seems like a wonderful place to spend a day or two exploring.

The sob is because it's snowing already! Mid-September is early even for Fairbanks, and I don't think I'm ready for this yet. I do like the snow, but seven months of it each year does get to be a bit much.
