sholio: sun on winter trees (Meredith Jeannie)

Not home yet, but no longer on the road

Back at my sister's place from the New England road trip -- and flying back to Alaska tomorrow. Where it is supposed to be (*sob*) snowing!

But we've had so much fun. I'm amazed how much we actually managed to pack into only five days: exploring Vermont mountains and Maine's coast, wandering about in cool little rural towns, buying apples and fudge from roadside vendors, investigating (nearly deserted) historical sites along the St. Lawrence River on the Ontario side, driving around farm country in Quebec. We ate at a bunch of nifty little local restaurants and diners; the only time we deigned to set foot in a chain store was one morning when we figured that we had to have coffee and donuts at a Tim Hortons because you can't go to Canada without stopping at a Tim Hortons -- it just isn't done!

I only wish I'd been able to do this a little later in the fall, when the trees were really turning colors, because as it was, the only place we really saw nice fall colors was along the Canada border in Maine. But it was still a lovely trip, and I ended up with a list of places I'd love to go back and see, sometime when I have more time to do so -- particularly downtown Quebec (I'd put the accent mark in there, but I can't figure out how), which is gorgeous and European-looking and really sucks to drive through at rush hour, but seems like a wonderful place to spend a day or two exploring.

Oh, I'm jealous! We live in Florida now, and I've never really been to New England (being in Boston's airport to change planes doesn't count), but I do miss Midwestern autumns.

And I haven't been to Quebec since our honeymoon, which is I-won't-tell-you how many years ago.

It sounds like a lovely trip.

Is that sob because you miss the snow, or because it's snowing already? I do miss the snow--but not this early in the year!

The sob is because it's snowing already! Mid-September is early even for Fairbanks, and I don't think I'm ready for this yet. I do like the snow, but seven months of it each year does get to be a bit much.

Sounds like one hell of a trip, I never even seen snow in my life (live in Florida), I would love to make a trip like that one day, actually a cruise to Alaska is on my list to do.

You should post some shots of your vacation. I'm sure the landscapes were incredible,

I'll definitely have pictures up soon! I don't have Photoshop on my laptop, though, so I can't crop and resize them 'till I get home.

I'm sorry - snowing?? Not the kind of snow that stays, I hope? Meep.

The trip sounds lovely, and I can't wait to see pictures!

It didn't actually snow! Lies, just cruel lies. *g* So far, anyway...

Oooohhh snow, I've never seen real snow. Melbourne gets four seasons in one day but not that.
I'm glad the trip was good and one day I might make it to that area. (I've told my teenage nieces and nephews that they have to support me in the manner to which I WISH to become accustomed.) :)

LOL! Gonna have to remember that...

It has not actually snowed yet, for which I am very grateful. Just rain. I actually like winter, but we usually get about seven months of it (actual snow-on-the-ground, below-freezing winter), and that is a little bit ... much.

Brrrr!!!!
Today was a warmish 20 degrees celcius (don't ask me to convert!) with strong winds and a little rain. Just a normal Melbourne day!

Yay! Sounds like you had a great time! Awesome! And you're now better traveled around NE than I am -- I only ever go to Vermont to ski! And I've never left the coast of Maine. How cool are you? And I still need to go to Quebec! It's so sad - 5 hours drive from Montreal, 8 from Quebec, and I still haven't been! But I've been to Vancouver three times, Toronto twice...It's like, the closer it is, the less likely I am to visit it. Heh.

Next year, you should time it for Columbus Day -- about October 10. It's the best time to visit.

Glad you had a great time! And come again!

Isn't that the usual way of things when you live in a place, though? I know people who've only just moved to Alaska who have actually seen more of the state than I have! Yet I've been to Germany twice ... I think when you live somewhere, there's a "well, I can do that anytime, I'd rather do something exotic!" kind of mental thing that happens.

We did use the coast trails book when we were in Maine -- it was pouring rain in New Hampshire, though, so no hiking there!
