Sanctuary 3x16 - Awakening
Darn it, Sanctuary ... how am I supposed to quit you when you keep having episodes that are actually good?!
GILLIAN HORVATH CAN WRITE ALL EPISODES FROM NOW ON PLZ? :D
Okay, before I get into the TESLAAAAA, let me just say that I loved the B-story with Kate, too! I really liked that the episode wasn't just Tesla and Helen, and also that the show doesn't gloss over the darker aspects of Kate's past while acknowledging that she's a different and better person now. (And the bit at the end - "A year ago no one would have missed me" ... oh, Kate. Though ... hasn't it been more like two years by now?)
But anyway. There was also TESLA. And TESLA + HELEN. And, okay, I could pretty much anticipate every twist in the plot long before it happened -- Tesla is revamped to save his life! The other vampires turn out to be backstabbing bastards with no interest in a mongrel wannabe-vampire! Tesla chooses Team Human and helps defeat the vampires! But I DO NOT CARE, because everything that happened was everything I wanted to happen and much more than I hoped for, with the one quibble about Tesla being permanently revamped (but, ehhh, I figured it'd happen, so I'll stick to the squee this time around).
I am not sure whether this or "Trail of Blood" is now my favorite Sanctuary episode of all time! Because, on the one hand, "Trail of Blood" has Tesla being all heroic(ish) self-sacrificey and presumed dead and needing to be rescued by Team Sanctuary -- not to mention all scruffy. But this episode has near!dead!Tesla and Helen beating on an indestructible vampire cocoon with a ROCK to save him! HOW CAN ONE CHOOSE?!
Also, most novel use of magnetic powers ever! I am not sure whether the thing with the epi-pens was total medical fail or sheer wacky genius; possibly a little of both. Not to mention how much I loved that what Tesla eventually used to save himself from the queen vampire's trap was not his vampire abilities at all, but his much-maligned magnetic powers plus a grappling hook. Team Human FTW! And the plotting was pretty tight -- I loved how much of it relied on clever usage of stuff that we'd seen before, like the fact that Helen's Source blood makes her read as a vampire to vampire-detecting equipment, or the self-destruct in the Hollow Earth map.
Otherwise, most of what I have to say about this episode is a series of squeaky flaily noises, so I will say it with SCREENCAPS instead!

This is what happens when you stand around pontificating after Helen tells you to do something, Nikola, you dink.

Helen might be freaking out, but *I* FIRMLY APPROVE OF THIS PLOT DEVELOPMENT.
(I've never really figured out how I feel about Helen/Nikola. I am pretty sure it would be a trainwreck to end all trainwrecks, not to mention that her general disdain for Nikola's blatant passes at her sends a pretty clear message that she's not into him that way. On the other hand, I find Helen + Nikola thoroughly adorable; I love the rapport that they have with each other and the way they know each other inside out -- I guess that's what happens when you know somebody for a century.)

Gratuitous injured Tesla.

I admit to being thoroughly in love with Helen and Tesla's interaction in this whole section of the episode -- the snark ("How long can you hold on?" "For the rest of my life." HEE.) and his last request and the way that they completely avoided any sort of sentimentality or soppiness, but Helen's worry comes through loud and clear. And it's got to be even worse for her because she is a medical doctor; she not only has a pretty good idea how dire his condition is, but she has to be dealing with guilt about not being able to do anything.

Take your eyes off him for one minute and he's self-medicating with epi-pens.

Also gratuitous. But pretty.

And now Helen's rescue plan of total CRAZY. I love that in her own way, she's every bit as much of a mad scientist as Tesla.

Er, make that the rescue plan of total crazy and also FAIL.

Situation just got dire.

Helen would like Tesla to keep in mind that he's not allowed to die until she's done rescuing him, dammit.

You know things are bad when one of the smartest people on the planet is reduced to whacking on things with rocks.

... which actually worked, oddly enough. (I love her "wtf" face here.)

Still not allowed to die.

AT does a marvelous job of pulling off Helen's combination of "Oh yay, it worked!" and "Oh no, what have I done?!"
A few more caps from the rest of the episode:

Vampire!Tesla twiddling his claws while contemplating his bag o'stuff cracks me up for some reason.

Again with the gratuitous pretty.

Aaaaand he's back on Team Human. At least in this particular case.

Killing Tesla: still not okay.

And we'll finish off with a cap from the other storyline, for MOAR gratuitous pretty!

(And, yes, noted, none of it would have happened if Tesla had stopped being so chatty and listened to Helen, but still... the underdogs kill super vampire court with a holographic map! Unlike a certain episode two weeks back, when everyone was a chicken with their head cut off.)

I'm still disappointed in the revamping, but, well, I guess there's no need to go into that. *g*

Um...why are we not friends? *adds to friends list*

I oughta warn you that I don't talk about Sanctuary much, though -- not that I mind anyone friending me at any time for any reason whatsoever, and I do talk about other stuff; it's just that, if you were friending me exclusively for the Sanctuary stuff, I figured I'd better let you know that Sanctuary is really not my main fannish squeeze right now!
