Er, wow
I think I'm done with Sanctuary for a while. I still plan to watch the next Tesla episode when it comes around (because, TESLA!) but ... otherwise? No. For now, at least, I am through.
It's pretty rare for a show to contain such fury-inducing levels of TOTAL STUPID in a single episode that it makes me go I AM NOT SUBJECTING MY BRAIN TO ANOTHER EPISODE OF THIS SHOW, especially when my standards are already as low as they are for Sanctuary, but this one? Yeah.
And I can tell you the exact point where I finally tipped over, too. When Abby escaped, got away free and clear, had the run of the city, and then WENT BACK TO THE BAD GUYS because she "had to finish her date with Will" WITHOUT so much as trying to make contact with the Sanctuary or acquire a weapon or form some kind of escape plan? WITHOUT PHONING THE FREAKING SANCTUARY THAT IS LIKE SIX BLOCKS AWAY? Yeah. That was my breakup point with this show. (In the long run, I suppose it wouldn't actually have mattered if she had, but it was such an utter brain-breaking moment of stupidity that it just left me speechless -- "I'm free! I can run away! I can call for help or at least let Will's powerful, heavily armed friends know where he is! I can get some kind of weapon from any one of these MANY stores around me! But I will do none of those things because I have to see this through with Will, so hey, bad guys, you can have me back as a hostage again" ... WHAAAAT.)
The episode was already actively annoying me up to that point with the ineptitude and inconsistency on the part of both the main characters and the bad guys (I could make a list, I could make SUCH A LIST), but that was it. Done. I was so furious with both the show and the characters at that point that the ONLY thing that could've salvaged the show for me was if Abby had been in league with the bad guys, which I was really hoping would turn out to be the case. But, no. And the more we found out about the actual "plan" (on the part of both the bad guys and Helen), the more nonsensical and stupid everything up to that point became.
I would be more willing to forgive this episode for being a miserable, badly written, idiotic mess (because, really, a Will-centric ep is never going to be my cup of tea anyway) if the last two had been better. But last week's was a blahfest in which everyone was massively OOC, and the mid-season opener, "Pax Romana", was a promising-looking episode that descended into total anticlimax and DO NOT WANT at the end. (
grav_ity has an excellent post on Pax Romana and the show's handling of Abnormals that sums up all of my problems with Pax Romana and the show's ethics in general much better than I could.) When three episodes in a row make me wonder why I'm wasting an hour of my life on this show every week, not to mention INFURIATING me with the STUPID on a regular basis ... I think it's time to stop watching the show.
It's still not all bad (even as much as I hated this episode, I still enjoyed the scenes with Kate and Declan), and frankly, as we all know, I'm willing to put up with a LOT of bad writing and general cheesiness if I'm getting enough fun and squee from the show to make it worth it. *g* But with Sanctuary, the scales have definitely tipped way too far over into the "annoyance" side for me to be able to salvage it. I'm still willing to watch a handful of episodes just for the guest stars (TESLA, obviously, and I'll probably watch the Peter Wingfield eps because I am weak) but otherwise? I don't think it's worth it. I still love Helen and Henry and Kate and some of the recurring characters, but not enough to put up with the awful, awful writing that they're being subjected to. I'd rather quit while I still have some affection left for the show and the characters, rather than suffering through until I hate the whole thing.

And my jaw practically dropped when Abby came back to Will rather than phone for friggin' help. Would that have been too hard? No! It really blew my mind and made me dislike Abby even more.
I actually liked last week's episode much better - the build up, the mystery, even the end where their attempt at lying to smooth things over backfires (I would have felt it a bit skeevy if the lie had worked). What I didn't like - and what made the ep feel almost like a bad fanfic - was how everyone affected automatically assumed the worst of each other - especially Will. It really annoyed me how quickly and easily Will accused Henry of betrayal. I mean, they encounter weird crap all the time and yet none of them considered even for a moment that something must be going on. No, they just blamed each other. It was obnoxious.
I'm going to keep giving it a chance myself since a few gems should come along, but any more episodes like last night's and I may end up giving up on it again.

Yes! That's what I meant about the OOC-ness last week - like you said, it was like a bad fanfic! The basic premise of the episode was pretty interesting, but watching them all at each others' throats and assuming the worst of each other really frustrated me. Especially since there's not a character among them who hasn't been affected by mind-altering weird stuff at some point (Helen tried to kill Will on the submarine; Will hosted the Kali spider; and so forth). Are we supposed to believe that after working together for years, they have this little trust for each other? It really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Haven't watched the newer episode yet, feeling kind of meh about it.
Pax Romana...I was completely and utterly distracted by both the lack of Tesla (he was in the season previews looking like he might be in the ep) and by thinking that the Sanctuary crew was going to stage some kind of coup or spark a rebellion or...something. You know, after being executed and all.

Yes! I thought so to, because otherwise it just didn't make any sense. They were all behaving like children! Not only should they have more trust in each other than that, but it's not as if nothing like this has ever happened to them before.
I definitely think it's time for me to take a break from the show, and it's rather unfortunate that I'm feeling that way only three episodes into the back half of the season, after a long break already. Not a good sign ...

I watched parts of the first season and gave up when I felt the characters weren't very likeable. Then I watched a few after they got rid of the daughter and around the time that Michael Shanks guest-starred, but gave up after a while again. I've already given up on this show twice now, because of the stupid and the ethical landmines. But the lack of other good SF on TV makes me think I should try again--it wasn't ALL bad after all. (LOL)
Since you are mentioning many of the things I didn't care for, then it looks like it hasn't changed much. Crap. Yeah, bad writers. Damian Kindler wrote a couple of good Stargate episodes, but then he also wrote several of the worst ones. As a producer, it appears he has the same mentality.
Hey, this is the perfect show for Syfy--all the young men tune in to see the hot chicks and the "monsters." Blah.

despite of very good idea of the five, there ugly script (as you said it yourself - miserable, badly written, idiotic mess). i have no heart to look it. i only looking some episoded with tesla and of cause with peter wingfield, whom i love as actor. but his watson (or holmes as we know this)! what doing this great character in this show?! almost nothing at all! so why he is here? for what? the same i can say about any other personages. what did here griffit (the invisible man)? he was dead from the first episode. so for what he alredy was i this script? why to bother to write him at all? as i said it's idiotic script. i completely understand you decision. my hug to you. :)
and i have a little recomendation (if you already not familiar with this). my buddy here in Lj icarus_chained writing very interesting stories about the five from 'sunctuary'. she is deep thinker
and her stories more interesting (and with more philosophy) then it was in real show. seriosly! try to read it here http://icarus-chained.livejournal.com/218593.html *wink* maybe you'll even write something yourself after this. wish you luck :)
