Highlander 5x01-5x04 (random comments)
Despite sound-sync issues, somehow I've managed to watch four episodes anyway. I GOT IT BAD, YOU GUYS.
So. These episodes! OH JOE. OH DUNCAN. OH EVERYBODY. :D
There aren't really words for how much it delights me that Joe and Duncan have managed to patch things up and work their way back around to an easy rapport again. I love those two so much. And I love that they have the kind of friendship that is able to weather some incredibly serious blows and still come out strong in the end. The bit at the end of 5x04 with the football made me grin so hard. Actually a lot of their scenes in the past few episodes put a huge grin on my face. "That's the hell of it ... weighing ethics and honor against a friend's life." Ohhhhhh, show.
Richie, wow. Again, I love that the show doesn't make things easy. We've been watching him grow up, and that doesn't always involve becoming a kinder and better person. He's still a fundamentally decent kid, just -- troubled and angry, and the show is willing to go there with it, and show him doing things that are unpleasant and unkind and, in the case of picking a fight with and killing an Immortal who doesn't mean him any harm, downright cruel. But ... it feels very real, and again, there are consequences for everything. The characters never get through anything unscathed or unchanged.
What else from these eps? Hmmm ... it was nice to have Carl's story revisited, and also, OMG WEE DUNCAN IS VERY CUTE. (Um, adult Duncan is very cute too. In so many ways. I don't think there's an episode yet where snarky!Duncan hasn't made me laugh.) Oh, and Cassandra! Okay, I kinda knew about her, in the sense that I knew there would be a character called Cassandra and she has some connection or other to Methos? At least now I've seen her, eh? And I presume we'll see her again.
That's about it, really. Having just watched 5x04, right now I'm all flaily with love for Joe and Duncan, and so very relieved that they've managed to find their way back to what they had before. SHOWWWWWWWW!

I have a soft spot in my heart for "Prophecy". I'm particularly fond of female Immortal mentors (see: Rebecca, Ceirdwyn, Mei-Ling) and I love anything related to Duncan's mortal life. His mom was so awesome, facing down Kantos. Cassandra essentially kidnapping Duncan allowed Mary to protect her son: when Kantos used the Voice on Mary, she could tell the truth and say that the child he sought was not there. Wee!Duncan is indeed adorable.
And now I need to sleep. (I swear, I'm not stalking you! This is what I get for checking LJ one last time...)

I found "Prophecy" interesting but not actually that compelling, particularly since I was really surprised that the Kantos thing kind of fizzled out like it did. I was expecting Kantos to become their next multiple-episode villain -- he was the first Immortal in a while who's been downright terrifying in a whole new way. I wasn't expecting him to be defeated so quickly. On the other hand, I have a lot of faith in the show - I don't believe they'd bring up the mind-control plot thread or the prophecy just to drop it again, so I expect later episodes will hark back to that one in some way.
On the other hand, I did really enjoy seeing more of Duncan's early life and his family and friends. I expect wee!Duncan would have been the sort of child who'd have driven his parents to distraction by running off into the woods on wild adventures. And I loved that his parents refuse to even acknowledge that he is anything other than their son. (Which makes his father's later rejection all the more heartbreaking. Poor Duncan.) Cassandra was interesting; it's intriguing to see an Immortal who does not appear to live by the sword, but defends herself in other ways. I've kinda given up on trying to work out the metaphysics of their world and just decided to roll with it. *g* Yes, they have psychic powers, fortune tellers, magic springs and pyrotechnic Quickenings. IT'S JUST THE WAY THE WORLD WORKS, DAMN IT. *g*

Buffyverse crossovers claim Immortals are a kind of demon, Stargate crossovers claim Immortals are a kind of alien. Other fanon explanations are that it's a mutation or magic. I lean more towards the mystical/supernatural than the alien/mutation argument, but I guess there's room for wacky science.

I do remember the other three though more or less. End of Innocence probably the clearest, because I liked how they come back to Richie and show how the events of "Something Wicked" affected him. Being attacked by Duncan kinda blew his world apart, and he's taking it out on everyone else (not that I think that excuses his behavior, but I do understand where it came from).

And yeah, I really loved how "End of Innocence" dealt with Richie's end of the fallout from "Something Wicked". That's one of the things I love most about this show: that episodes have consequences, rather than the show pushing a reset-to-zero button every time. I like how we're seeing Richie's missteps as he grows up -- the failures as well as the triumphs. Like you said, Duncan brought his whole world crashing down -- not intentionally, but that's what happened, and now he's angry and disillusioned and lost, and taking it out on people around him.

The playing with trains was really adorable too, I love when Duncan uses unorthodox methods. He's quite clever, which is neat. *g*

The trains ... yeah. :D It's neat to see Duncan thinking his way out of a problem rather than stabbing it to death. He is a smart guy, and it's neat to see that developed a bit.
