One more little thing about 4x16
I think one of the things that gets to me most of all about Methos is "Methuselah's Gift" is how hard he's struggling to hold it together -- emotionally, I mean. He spends the first half of the episode not really displaying a whole lot; I'd actually wondered if the show had gone and forgotten about Alexa (up to the point where it became obvious that Alexa was THE WHOLE POINT OF THE PLOT) but, no, it's just that he's ... trying not to crack, mostly. That's one of the most heartbreaking things about that scene with Amanda, when he finally lets the mask slip, because he cries on her shoulder for a few heartbeats and then pulls away, pulls it together, keeps going. And there are a couple of bits in the goodbye scene at the end, too, when he's obviously right on the edge of losing it and then doesn't.
Oh Methos.
Oh Methos.

But, yeah -- I love how controlled he is, how hard he's trying not to break down, and how she's there to let him snap for a minute if he needs to.

*snort* nice try. *g*
Amanda - yeah - I think you're right about that. Methos is so enigmatic that it's hard to know how many people he has that he's close to, but he doesn't seem to be inclined to let his walls down to anyone. Amanda was sort of in the right place at the right time to get a glimpse behind the mask.
