sholio: sun on winter trees (Highlander-Duncan flashback)

There can be only one!

So, I'm up to Highlander 1x18 (... I think?) and, aside from a certain amount of giggling at the cheese (HAHAHA KILLER MIMES WTF), my reaction basically consists of wanting to draw little hearts around all the characters. Especially ♥ ♥ ♥ Duncan ♥ ♥ ♥. (See?)

I JUST LOVE EVERYBODY. Particularly Duncan, who really could not be more adorable. I love his snarkasm and his little grins; he just seems kind of adorably bemused at the fact that he lives in a world of brooding crazy people with swords who all want to kill him. And yet, so badass. I also like the clothes he wears. Actually, I kind of just enjoy staring at him a lot. :D :D

And TESSA! I love her so much! I'm trying not to get too attached -- as noted in my last Highlander post, I rather suspect she doesn't survive the show; NO SPOILERS THOUGH, GUYS, I MEAN IT -- but she's so awesome and so adorable with Duncan. I love how she's got her own life and her own career, and they even show it -- rather than just telling us that she's an artist, we always see her sketching and sculpting and having shows, and they even moved to another continent for her career! ♥ (And now Duncan is a kept man. And is totally fine with it. Awwww. ♥)

Richie and Darius sort of stole my heart slowly, rather than making me squee and flail immediately like Duncan and Tessa. Also, I'm kind of aware that getting too attached to Darius is probably not a good idea. But awww, Duncan and his little mortal family, and all his friends ...! They're good at making me like people on this show. Also, I quite enjoy their casting department's fondness for tall, dark guys with high cheekbones. *g*

And considering that the show was made in 1992, I think it's kind of awesome how up-to-date their technology is! They have cell phones! And laptops! And Internet! I thought I remembered TV taking a lot longer than this to catch onto the world's changing technology. *pats show*

Once again, no major spoilers, please! Sadly I will be running off to the Internetless (and Netflix-less) wilds of Alaska tomorrow, so no more Highlander for a week and a half. *is sad*

It also helps that Adrian Paul is hot like burning \0/

I've seen most of the series back when it was on TV, and I've got season 1 on DVD. I really need to get the rest :D Maybe after I'm done with Farscape and CSI, I've only got a few sets to go.

KILLER MIMES WTF

LOL! It took me a minute to remember that episode...at first I was like ???

Actually, I kind of just enjoy staring at him a lot.

Also, very much yes on this. :)

I love Tessa. She's awesome. And I love the little family they have going on with Richie. :)

I want to watch Highlander for Peter Wingfield. Is this show worth my while? If it's cheesier than SG-1 I don't know if I could bear it.

*laughs* As I was just volunteered - if you're interested I'd be happy to tell you the Methos eps. That's how I originally saw the show, with a Best of Methos several-times-dubbed-VHS tape. Ahh, good times. (I actually didn't get around to seeing the first two = seasons until a few years ago...) Or you can just work off this list here (http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0005523/filmoseries#tt0103442). You'll miss some arc stuff but the general gist (hawt guys with swords) comes across!

Ah, Highlander - my very first fandom. Memories galore! Cut my fanfic teeth in that fandom. It was great because you could literally do anything. I won't explain why; I'm sure you will understand as you work your way through the seasons.

Liver Action RPG!

[identity profile] mecurtin.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] vickita, who is not on your flist, I don't think (she's also on DW, but I'm commenting here cuz it's lonely over there) took a trip down HL Memory Lane today:

About a bazillion years ago, on alt.tv.highlander, there was this very bright young man who called himself Dayspring. One day someone typoed a request to the group, and asked if anyone had the rules for the HL "Liver Action" RPG.

This is what happened. link to original post via Google Groups (http://bit.ly/fj7rg2)
Yup. First, go out and buy at least two swords. At least one of them should be the Marto Sword of the Dragon, unless you plan on being Connor, in which case, you can buy that sword at the Highlander Store.

Second, get some liver. And go buy a really big generator and a tesla coil.

Third, prop up the liver and the other sword together. Try to make the liver look fierce. If you want to get really in-depth, you could add some supports and hydrolics and motorize the liver.

Fourth, get somebody to hide in the shadows and Watch.

Fifth, now, go up to the liver. Introduce yourself. If you have a clan name, definately include that in your introduction. Tell the liver that if it walks away, this can end now.

If the liver walks away, seek professional help.

When the liver doesn't walk away, whip out your sword from beneath your coat. Fight the liver with all your strength, but only strike the sword for the first part of the battle. Disarm the liver if possible. For your last swipe, cut the liver across its broadside. Look at the liver sadly, and say "it's what we do...".

Then bring your sword up, and cut downward, cleaving off some part of the liver.

Now, grab the generator contacts and the tesla coil. Obey the laws of physics, and you should begin to spark and glow in the dark. Writhe in pain (and look like you're enjoying it, if possible through the pain). When the generator blows out, if you are able to, get up and walk away.

Have your friend who hid in the shadows record what he saw. Make sure he cross-references your chronicle with that of the liver's.

And that's how you play the Highlander Liver Action Role Playing Game.

I'm gutted. Last I went looking for my old favourite Highlander fic to reread and copy a few https for you if'n you ask at some point in the future.

They's gone. The Archives. The Author pages like Ladonna King. I went to check out MacGeorge's webpage and was blocked becuase of detected viruses. I'm almost afraid to look for Sylvia Volk's pages.

I have a lot of hardcopies, but that doesn't help you.

[identity profile] frogspace.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I would say most of the fic is available via Wayback. Some of Ladonna's stories (like "Still-Heart") you can find in the Seventh Dimension archive, but most of her fic is indeed gone. However, if you are looking for her Highlander fic, I saved all her Highlander stories when announced that she would discontinue her site. If there is something specific you want to read, just let me know. :)

[identity profile] jimandblair.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a hard copy of Still-Heart painstakingly printed out on a dot-matric printer. Such a rich fic.

I recall that Ladonna Kings had some seriously creepy and engrossing Kronos fic. Do you have them?

Do you have them?

I think so. Where should I send them?

Oh wow, you have it saved? I'd love to get my hands on almost all of Ladonna's stuff. Such good memories I have of it!

My email is misssheron at inbox dot com...if you'd care to help me out I'd be very grateful!

I'm happy to report that Sylvia Volk's fic is still online! And looks to be virus free! I just typed her name in Google and her page was the first result. (God, now I have to re-read "The Good Student".)

MacGeorge has an LJ, [livejournal.com profile] macgeorge1, so you might find some of her fic there.

ETA: Sorry for the edits, but are you sure the HL Archive is gone? Are you talking about this site (http://hlfiction.net/)? Maybe you just have an old URL.

Thanks for the LJ link. I took the opportunity to send a message that the site that I accessed was riddled with viruses to MacGeorge.

Man, Volk's fic. Wonderful.

HL Archive? Thanks for the link *g*. It was the seventh dimension one that I couldn't find along with a bunch of authors. Gosh, it was depressing. I've been trawling around most of the day. But somehow I ended up in Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon fanfic.

Ahhhh am not going to say anything because of *spoilers spoilers*

(but it's not especially spoilery to say that Methos has veeeery nice cheekbones. I believe it's a Welsh feature...at least there's several Welsh actors who have 'em. But Peter Wingfield especially~)

Okay, not spoilery, but I gotta add that I totally adore Tessa, and her & Duncan are beyond adorable.

(I love Amanda, too - didn't recall she was in s1, but saw you mentioning her elsewhere, and yeah, Amanda is <3)

Just about everyone was awesome when I was watching Buffy - I knew a fair bit from fandom osmosis but a lot of stuff came as nice surprises (...or not nice surprises, being Whedon :P)

I'd worry that the Methos-hype is too much and you might be let down, but I'd heard from everyone how awesome Spike was and he didn't disappoint, so I'll bet on fangirl bait XD

[identity profile] mitchy.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift has two very long HL fan fics that are made of win with a side order of awesome sauce. The snark is a thing of great beauty :D I think she links to her fan fic from her LJ page *nudges you in that direction*

[identity profile] tabby333.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I adored Highlander. It was really the first time I waded into the fanfic pool and explored the world that is fandom. Then it was on to The Sentinel and various and sundry other shows over the years. Some of the fanfic I read back then is gone. It's very sad.

Duncan was easy on the eyes, I adored Tessa (and her relationships with both Duncan and Richie), I loved Richie's relationship with Duncan, and since you mentioned Methos, I adored him as well.

Have fun watching!

OMG I want to rewatch it all. I _loved_ HL. This was the show that got me into slash for the first time not because of the slash itself but because there was so much outstanding slash fic being written for this fandom. (Lots of hot unattached men running around? Check!)

I would absolutely love to hear your opinions as you watch more of this!!

[identity profile] flingslass.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't stand his long hair! I think I was the only one :D
