I cannot decide whether to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang! Signups close on the 29th, so I only have a few more days to decide. This is their last year, and I'm very sad at the idea of not being part of the final one. On the other hand, last year was awesome; I had so much fun co-creating the Whaleverse with [livejournal.com profile] naye, and I suspect there's at least a 50/50 chance I'll end up failing to complete my story this year if I do sign up. So maybe it's better for me to go out on a high note than to sign up and fail to meet the goal and never have another chance to redeem myself?

And right now I'm doing a pretty good job at sticking to my original fiction goals, and I don't really want to derail myself. I know from past experience that when I commit myself to doing a ficathon fic, I tend to have trouble working on anything else 'til I finish it; I might think I can work on both a Big Bang fic and an original novel at the same time, but past experience tends to imply that I can't.

Maybe I should sign up as a beta or an artist instead? Or just cheerlead? I would really like to be involved, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to commit myself to a big fic right now.

I say don't sign up. For me at least, it's hard to get back to original stuff once I'm in a fannish place, though naturally I don't know how it works for you. Still, and much as I'd love to read another long SGA story by you, two commitments like that are a lot of stress.

Plus, I kind of need a second beta-reader. ;)

Why, yes, it's all about me.

Signing up as an artist would also give you something tangible to work with, instead of making it all up on your own.

That's good, seeing as how I need all the help I can get! ;D

I sent you an invite to join our Big Bang support group, if you think you'll have the time to beta read for me. Perfectly fine if you don't. :)

Eh, one thing to keep in mind is that this is the last SGA Big Bang using that website. Madelyn did not invent the Big Bang fest format*. She can only say she's not going to run it on her site next year. She can't say no one else can ever run an SGA Big Bang.

*And even if she had, I don't believe that means no one else can ever run the fest if she decides not to.

You should sign up as an artist! You would be involved, would have done both fic and art over for the Big Bang overall, and it won't conflict with your original fic.

[identity profile] rheanna27.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've signed up, but that's because I've never managed to complete a Big Bang before, and I'd really like to be able to say I'd done it, just once. And I'm going to pretty much clear the decks for this: if I'm serious about it, I won't be able to take on anything else while I'm doing it.

I'm going to be completely selfish now, but... If you decide not to write this year, would you consider perhaps beta'ing for me? I have a couple of betas I've used for a long time, but they're not in SGA fandom, and I know that some of the folk in SGA fandom who've been good enough to beta for me in the past have big offline commitments over the summer. The fic I'm planning will be largely canon-based (I'm picking up where season 5 leaves off) and very action/adventure and plotty -- it will be slash, but I'm already pretty sure it'll be PG13. In short, I think it might be your kind of thing.

Drop me an email and I'll happily tell you more, if you're interested - no commitment.

I agree with everyone else so far, you need to do what's best for you. Joining as a beta, cheerleader and/or artist means you're still involved if you really want to be - and someone else might pick up the Big Bang challenge next year (one hopes!) and run it.

Sure, I'd love more long fic from you, but if you need to concentrate on other things, then don't feel pressured into diverting your attention elsewhere! Personally, I'm in awe of anyone who can write original fiction - not something I'm good at!! And I have plenty of your fic to reread whenever I feel the need... like 'Running On Empty' that I'm rereading today for the umpteenth time!

EDIT: That last paragraph makes it sound like it's all about me - sorry!

I was kind of on the fence a little this year too, but Jades is very convincing *g* I guess one of the real questions is, are there any epic SGA stories you really want to tell right now? It is rather open this year, so you could wind up writing anything... of course, it's probably much less stressful to cheerlead/beta. (I would include art in there, but I always find it a little stressful to illustrate/Photoshop under deadlines.)

Selfishly, I'd love another epic fic from you, but if you're in a groove with original fic right now, I'd hate for you to lose that.

Oh, right, I knew it would be all my fault :P

@Friendshipper: Just chiming in to agree with the above. I still have some stories I want to tell with these characters, and Grey was kind enough to be persuaded to join me, but I only have fanfic to work on right now. If I do dig out original stuff, I doubt I'll be able to work on them simultaneously.

Looking at the comments, you've got plenty of people who'd like your input as well as your fic! Hopefully you can find a awy of taking part that keeps your stress at acceptable levels ;)

You make that sound like it's a bad thing ;)

*sniff* no new whaleverse? But I can see switching gears would be hard to do. Art and betaing would get you in on the inside and involved.

Hmm...looks like I need to find your big bang fic from last year. I agree it's best to do what you think you can handle.

However, I'm also thinking about signing up as a writer. I already signed up as an artist, but I would like to have the challenge of completing an SGA epic under deadline.

I love your work while i would love to read more of your fic, i wouldn't wish to over strech yourself and fall behind on rl commiments. So i am looking forward to your art work

Please please sign up if you can. I love that Whaleverse fic SO MUCH. My favourite thing in that big bang and among many many stories outside of it. *puppy eyes*

If the momentum for your original stuff is steady, then I say focus on the original stuff. Although I would also encourage signing up to do art. It would be different and you might end up having just as much of a blast that you did with writing for Big Bang last year :D. I thought about signing up for the art portion as well, but decided it would be heaping my plate too high.
