I have a present for penguin!fic fans

(All, um, none? of you on my friend list? But seriously, this is cute.)

Okay ... somehow, I have actually managed to make it through two years in this fandom without reading penguin!fic. Until tonight. Because one such story was rec'd on [livejournal.com profile] sgastoryfinders, and it was by an author I like, and I was all, "Oh hell," and clicked on it, and it was so freakin' cute, and there goes my penguin-free streak in fandom. So, if you're a John/Rodney pairing person, and you haven't read [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan's Antarctic Drift, go forth and read. SO. DAMN. CUTE.

And this got me to scan in a photo from a recent issue of National Geographic. I swear to God I have not tampered with this photo in any way. This is EXACTLY how it ran in the August 2007 issue of National Geographic.

Yes, you read that right. Rodney the emperor penguin.

And I can actually SEE the scene, with Rodney!penguin all tranquilized and limp, and the hapless biologist trying to radio-collar him while furious John!penguin attacks his ankles with his useless penguin beak. And of course, Rodney thinks the radio collar is really cool, and tries to figure out how it works, and John's all bristling and glowering at human photographers taking pictures of them from the other side of the ice floe ....

...

Penguin!fic!?

This fandom...this...there are no words.

(The fic was too cute, though, and the National Geo scan is hysterical, as is your imagined scenario XD)

Oh, I guessed from the way you said it that p!fic was a genre. (but penguins...birds...they don't even have...the sex would be...um?) Umm. Yes. CRACK.

I think I love it!

--walls, though?!

The greenhouse one I saw. The walls one, now I want to find...(and of course there's the unicorn!Rodney/rainbow!John fic, which is far more beautiful than it has any right to be. Man, I really am giddily amused to be in this fandom!)

That is a real story about walls and I read it, but it was so long ago I can't think of where (probably through some early rec on storyfinders). I don't even remember the plot (if there was one), just that they were walls... I get sad in other fandoms where they don't have all the wacky stories. I think people are just willing to write more if they can put any crazy idea out there and it'll be accepted and even cherished. I love the good cannon stories best (such as your wonderful writing), but sometimes I just want to read a few pages of complete randomness that I enjoy mostly because they attach certain names to whatever they are writing about. Though it seems like people in this fandom usually do a good job of capturing some of the character traits even if they make the people animals or chairs or whatever else. And all the AUs are great, too. Ahh, fanfic, if only I hadn't given you up for my master's thesis...

But wait! Have you read lavvyan's story where there are peas and a complementary condiment I'll leave you to discover? It is incredibly in-character (and there is a hint of slash too! Kind of... Sorta... )
