SGA 03x20: First Strike
Oh wow. Wow. Best cliffhanger in SGA history. Seriously. That's awesome. I have a tiny niggly suspicion of how they're going to get out of it, but still! Best cliffhanger ever!
I've been waiting three years to see them fly the city. THEY FLEW THE CITY! I guess now we know once and for all that the Athosians didn't move back at the end of "Return" -- and from a story perspective, now we know why.
I was surprised how much sadness I felt that they were leaving Lantea (and we have an official name for it too -- finally -- now that it no longer matters!). But next season we'll have a whole new planet to explore! Oodles of new story potential and fic potential and SQUEE!
Okay, that's the big squee ... moving on to the little squees ...
The performance reviews! And CHUCK! And Sheppard's "Why don't you just make out?" to Zelenka and Rodney! *laughs* These people read fanfic. There is no other explanation.
There were places where the plot rushed a little too much for me. They jumped so quickly from Sheppard leaving the Apollo in the cloaked jumper to everyone coming back to the city that I spent some time thinking this was either another Replicator-induced dream or that Sheppard (when he shows up again) was a Replicator himself. Guess not! And I didn't feel that the plot did enough to convince me that the surgical strike against the Asurans was justified and necessary. It's such a huge thing and so pivotal to the plot overall that it felt a little contrived, and too much like editorializing on the part of the writers. ("Look, this is what happens when you shoot first and don't listen to the diplomats!") I was vaguely dissatisfied with the whole first half of the episode for that reason. But the second half more than made up for it with much, much squee.
I liked Elizabeth venting to Teyla; it's nice to see them interact as leaders and as people. Elizabeth still seems like a rather petty person to me -- especially her "If only all the military felt that way" to the Colonel when he apologized to her. What a childish thing to say, really! But I did love the way that Rodney shot straight past the Colonel to defer to Elizabeth when he was waiting for the go-ahead on sinking the city. Pwned!
And of course the Dynamic Duo came up with the plan to save the city and were pivotal in implementing it. Heeee! And I loved the team moment on the balcony, with Ronon wanting to "learn some science" so he can help out in situations like this. *heh* Of course he would frame it in such an overly straightforward way, but it was neat to see that -- and to see the "fifth wheels" feeling left out when there's nothing they can do to help.
Oh! And I'm happy to discover that I do actually like Dr. Keller! See, knowing how young she is, I was worried that she was going to be introduced as this wunderkind supergenius doctor who gets the CMO position because she's that much more badass than people twice her age. But I really LOVE the archetype of the character who has unwanted leadership thrust upon them. (Sheppard, anyone?) And the fact that she doesn't want the position, and doubts her ability to do it, makes her appeal to me. Next season will tell the tale, but she's definitely starting off on the right foot with me.
EDIT: Oh, I forgot the little "Good luck" ... "You too" in the chair room! It's a definite sign of how MUCH we've been getting of those little scenes in this season that it hardly even registered on my squee-dar, where it would have been a big event (for me) last season. But still ... squee!
