working on my fangirl street cred

So, I've never seen Highlander. The movies, yes. The TV show, no. However, Netflix has it streaming, so I've decided to remedy this gap in my fannish education. I'm up to the middle of the first season now, and having fun. :D Not much to say -- the cheese factor is THROUGH THE ROOF, but I was sort of expecting that. (Their rock'n'roll, "we are so hip in a very '80s kind of way" soundtrack slays me, though. And the theme song. OMG.) Really, it's SO dated, and yet ... so addictive. I like Tessa a lot, although I have a bad feeling about her continued survival, since I've seen Highlander clips in a lot of multifandom vids over the years and I don't think I've ever seen any clips of her. Unless it's just fandom being typical fandom about her. Anyway, I like her. And once I got past the urge to laugh at Duncan's soulfully smoldering Fabio good looks, I really kind of adore him; I don't think I was expecting him to be so sweet. I've picked up various bits and pieces of show lore via fannish osmosis, which means that I keep wondering when Methos is going to show up - not yet, apparently.

Oh, wow, now I'm all kinds of curious for your reactions to the six seasons of HL (assuming you keep watching to the end). I've never met an HL newbie before, someone fresh to the series who hasn't been completely spoiled.

I love the series a lot, though I fast-forward through some of the cheese. *g* The FX, clothes, music, etc, are all very dated, but it has great characters and some interesting conflicts. I do hope you'll post more about it!

I kind of adore Duncan too. He's so refreshingly honest and earnest and principled, but with massive flaws and blind-spots.

Oh, this is really fun to hear about someone completely new to the show. I'm glad that you're enjoying it. I may have to watch it all over again, myself. :D

I haven't seen Highlander in years! I'm also curious to see what you think as you continue to watch. :)

I'm kind of curious to find out if people are still writing fan fiction for Highlander! :)

It's not dead! Honestly!! Well, HL is nothing like SGA or HP, but it is still quietly alive. Immortal, I guess:)
And I assume you do not want fic links before you've finished the canon, but one good source that still gathers all HL related links (fic and non-fic) is Highlander Online Digest, a LJ comm newsletter.

Actually, HL was my first and main intro into fandom proper, so to speak. Before I'd lurked around in LOTR White Councilborads, which, well, was more male-dominated, all-meta thing (not that I did not enjoy it, but looking back, well, it was only part of what a fandom can be:)).
Highlander seems to be my forever and ever love, it stays even when I'm having mad crushes or dalliances or whatnot with anything else (*grins* it figures that immortals would figure out how to work poly).
I'd say HL is a big part of why I discovered fandom, fanfic, slash ... which frankly was like coming home to a place I did not know existed. HL was the first (and so far only) fandom that made me to go to RL conventions (which, btw, are still happening now and then, and which I loved, and plan to attend again when I can scrape together the money). It helps that apparently the cast had a blast when making the series, and they still love talking about it, and are really nice people in addition to being, you know, more or less decent actors or whatnot, and to hear David Abramowitz holding forth on his ideas about HL mythos or Jim Byrnes play blues is an experience I'm really glad I've had in this life. And I'm sure my life is only made shinier by the little crush I have on Elizabeth Gracen and Amanda both:)
Fandom as a thing can have a lot of crap together with a lot of shiny, but overall, I'm immensely happy and a lot more complete and fulfilled after I found it. So, yeah. I kind of heart HL the way I heart my childhood-sprung friendship that is still going strong and might possibly also be a love of my life *grin*?

You hadn't seen Highlander yet?! I loved that show a lot! Good to hear it isn't too dated nowadays. (I tried to rewatch an ep of Scarecrow and Mrs King but had to give up for the early 80s cheese and bad lighting, and the clothes!)

I'm curious to read your thoughts on the show.

The advantage of getting really late into a show is that an entire oevre of fic has already been written, recced, and categorized, ready for consumption.

going back to watch old TV shows is always a bit of a mixed bag.

During the last few months we have rewatched a few episodes of Buffy and Angel and found they are every bit as brilliant as back in the day. They haven't lost any of their shine. Okay, 'back in the day' isn't that long ago in this case... show started airing in '97, the only thing that really looks dated are the computers. Ha, we're watching SG-1 and have reached beginning of season three, same thing.
