New SGA fic: Ordo ad Fratres Faciendum

My fic for [livejournal.com profile] family_haven is done at last! *collapses*

If I'm butchering the Latin, someone tell me? Google is not always our friend.

Title: Ordo ad Fratres Faciendum
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
For: [livejournal.com profile] water_soter
Prompt: A mission gone wrong. Protective Ronon, h/c, Rodney helping, major points for pathos and injuries to both.
Main Character(s): all four team members, with a slight emphasis on Ronon and Rodney
Genre: friendship, action/adventure
Word Count: 20,800
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: one torture scene
Summary: A jumper crash separates the team on a wilderness planet, and they aren't alone. Late season five, somewhere before "Brainstorm"; mostly gen with background references to past Ronon/Keller, pre-Rodney/Keller, implied Teyla/Kanaan.
Author's Notes: "Ordo ad Fratres Faciendum" translates (roughtly) to "order of brother making"; it was a sort of blood brotherhood rite in the pre-modern Catholic Church.

Literally: armies/ranks to brothers creating or bringing about? I think I see what you're going for, but you may be being too literal. Though I will freely admit my Latin is very rusty. I can run it by a friend at school today, if you'd like. Or there are surely more informed people on your f'list who can tell you.

If you want, this website has a great "look up" function: http://latinlexicon.org/search_english.php

Ah, medieval Latin! Throw out the rule books, and then scramble all the grammar rules. But we'll still call it Latin. *g*

What's really throwing me is the "ad;" it usually means "to" and has a sense of motion to it that won't work with a passive gerund, as I recall things. I would have used "de", for the Order of Manufacturing Brothers. And unless "faciendum" is part of the original name, "aggregandus" probably fits the spirit of what you want better. There is a Latin saying, "aggrego te in nostrum numerum", which means "I count you in our number," and aggrego means, literally, gathering in the flock. It's used in human terms when facio usually isn't.

And that's probably enough of that! ;-)

Honestly, I'd ignore it at this point. ... Now that I've pointed it all out to you and whatnot.

Though as I recall more of my Latin, you don't even need the "de", just Ordo Fratres Aggregandus.

So, yeah, don't go changing anythign without a consultation from someone who's Latin is far less rusty than mine!!

This is good timing! Tonight I'll finish a job, and this fic shall be my reward. It's already printed and waiting. *rubs hands*
