May 1st Multifandom Promptfest (Commentfic Fest)

I am running a prompt and commentfic fest for May Day, to celebrate spring and give us all a little bit of a boost. Obviously this is not limited just to May 1; you can feel free to keep posting prompts and fills as long as you like! Prompts can be on any subject.

Rules:

• Leave as many prompts as you like! There is no obligation to fill any. Anonymous is turned on for both prompts and fills. No minimum length. Crossposting to AO3 or other sites (or posting longer fills or linking them) is fine. You may also fill your own prompt.

• Use any format you like for prompts. The format used in threesentenceficathon (fandom, character or pairing, prompt) is fine, but you can do it some other way if you like. (See examples of prompts and fills at the threesentenceficathon link; you may consider this a good example of how to do this fest.)

• The standard AO3 warnings (Graphic Violence, Major Character Death, Noncon, Underage) are considered OPT-IN; please do not include them if they aren't requested. These should also be warned for in subject linest.

• If you like, you can include do-not-wants in prompts, or link to them elsewhere. (Not required.)

• All fandoms are welcome, as are "Any" prompts and original work prompts.

• RPF is allowed for people over 18, famous in their own right, and not famous for serial killings or 20th/21st century war crimes.

• Commenting on other people's prompts with encouragement or questions is welcome.

• I will not be tracking comments on this post, although I will be keeping an eye on it. Feel free to bring mod issues to my attention if you notice anything!

• I reserve the right to delete without explanation any prompt or comment deemed disruptive or against the spirit of the fest.

original setting (A Day Care for Shifters) - Cherry, Tara, ensemble...

(I don't know if I'm doing this right, but it was fun! <3)

Cherry had no idea what Tara was. The little girl wore an aluminum pot on her head, and a long red tank dress that went to her knees, with a sparkly silver skirt from there to her feet. The tank dress had orange blobs painstakingly drawn onto it with fabric paint. She had a tail. No, a plug? It ended in prongs.

“Give me a clue,” Cherry begged. Tara was a sensitive kid, and she didn’t want to guess wrong and insult the girl.

“I glow in the dark!” Tara said, bouncing in place. “Guess!!”

“ARE YOU A ROBOT?” Gil asked. He was a lion, with a yarn mane, and he’d been told several times already that lions didn’t actually bite people.

“No,” Tara scoffed.

“Genie!” Jennifer guessed.

“She doesn’t LOOK like a genie!” Gil protested.

“A blender! She has a plug!” “A blender doesn’t glow in the dark!” “An alien!” “A tube of paint!” “Abba babba gabba!”

Tara shook her head, over and over again at each of the kids and finally declared, “I’m a LAVA LAMP!”

There was a moment of silence.

“Like a VOLCANO?” Gil wanted to know.

“No, I’m a lava lamp!” Tara said, starting to wilt.

Franzi, wearing a full cowgirl ensemble, immediately jumped up to defend her. “She’s the BEST lava lamb ever! She glows in the DARK! C’mon, Tara, let’s go play in the kitchen before any boys ruin it.”

“A volcano would have been better,” Gil grumbled.

He has her pinned, spindly arms keeping hers caged against her torso, bony hands in a manacle-tight grip around her wrists to keep her own from darting out to strike.

“Breathe, child, breathe,” Silco insists, voice ragged in her ear, but Jinx is too far away to hear it, too lost in the steel trap of memory and fear to do anything but sob, scream, howl like a wounded animal.

A never-emptying reservoir of pain, spilled out to the sky in an endless, broken voice, and all Silco can do is hold her through it. Hold her, tight and unflinching as they both sink to the floor, hold her even as she struggles to bolt, to escape, to be free—

He understands the urge, better than she realizes. But he can’t let her go, not yet. Not ever.

When she finally slumps against him, little form limp with exhaustion as she hiccups and drags in inhale after shaking, shattered exhale, all he can do is cradle her close.

“Don’t go. Don’t— please don’t leave me.”

“I’m here, Jinx. I’ll always be right here.”

She sighs, eyes slipping closed.

The warmth of his embrace is the only thing that’s real anymore.

Sinclair sometimes wondered what council meetings would be like if it was not only necessary to try to keep the ambassadors' and representatives' tempers in check, but also that of the various creatures slinking, scuttling, wafting, flying, or rolling around after them.

Londo's leati daemon -- a sort of large catlike animal - was at least vaguely similar to an Earth animal, other than the tentacles, although its moods were as unpredictable as Londo's. It liked to stretch out on the table in meetings and hiss at G'Kar's .... whatever that spiky thing perched on his shoulder was called.

Minbari daemons were all the same, slender pale creatures with sinuous bodies that reminded Sinclair of nothing so much as small dragons. From what Sinclair knew of the Minbari, their daemons did not change shape or settle, nor did they represent a creature that existed as an actual animal on Minbar. Their name for it meant "soul creature." Delenn's was smaller than most; it usually rode with its body wrapped around her wrist like an unusual form of jewelry.

Vorlons, almost unique among the intelligent races of the galaxy, did not seem to have daemons at all. There was speculation about that, though; it was possible that their daemons stayed with them in their environment suits, or existed on some other plane of reality.

And of course there was Ivanova's falcon perched on the back of her chair, occasionally threatening someone else's daemon during particularly heated council debates by dive-bombing its face. Ivanova claimed that he just did that, she couldn't stop him. Sinclair had his doubts.

Here, outside, the stars approach him slowly, almost as if they were afraid. But how could they, if he isn't? When Lead thinks about his origins, he remembers those very same stars in a bright sky, a fiery sun, and all the things he dreamt that he would see, once he was out there.

He has infinite words now, or so he thinks, but they are not yet enough to know the secrets lost in the deep pockets of time, or to stop from being marked and claimed and devoured by it.

But they are old friends, after all, and time still leaves messages for him--it still has something to say. It calls, and he always answers, he can't do anything else. Time knows what he wants, and speaks to that hidden part of him, that part that always wants more. It burns and sets him on fire, it claims him like a spark. It learns his name and says it, over and over again--it always says welcome home.

And he could walk away, but why would he want to? He needs to be here. He needs to be someone--he needs to be seen. And he is always ready, ready to have time, here within, and all around him. It's everything he has, everything he is, and nothing else will ever come close.

So he gives in. And he breathes in the stars, and tastes them on his tongue. They are bitter, sad and true, and so, so good. And they will own him, and he will own them back. And if they devour each other, well, then that's a very small price to pay. He might be a bit drunk on all these stars right now, but he thinks that he and time, they respect each other, after all. And that's worth everything.

The black birds have stayed close, following them right to this place near the sea, where the sun rises and flickers and catches the little charm fastened close to Childermass's heart--for safe journeys, for luck.

Vinculus breathes in the sun, and feels it on his skin, like a spell, like the question in his heart. And the magic surrounds him like smoke, like a heartbeat, like a furnace, with its eyes and fingers and mouth that read and breathe and know him.

The magic within trembles. And he keeps telling himself that it should be foolish--but it is not. No, not now, when the sky isn't empty anymore. Not now, when their hands find each other, like things do when they belong together, like a first step, like a new home hiding in the sea, in the sun.

"I don't see," Algy said with Algy-typical grumpiness, "why we shouldn't make the offer."

Biggles watched him, making an unsuccessful attempt to hide his amusement. He nodded toward their surprise guest, sitting a decorous distance away in the taverna. "You were the one urging me to keep an eye on the supply situation," he remarked.

That was an understatement. This latest mission, with its baffling directives and peculiar codes, was running longer than anyone anticipated, even with the percentage overage that Algy so conscientiously reminded him to tack on.

Thanks to carefully timed raids and haggling with local merchants, they were doing all right for viands, fuel, small items from needles to knick-knacks. But they were running desperately short of decent tea, or even the indecent kind.

"He's a guest," Algy said stiffly. "We owe him this much for bringing that last spot of intel."

Biggles merely leaned back and nodded, watching with a fond eye as Algy poured von Stalhein a proper cup of tea, taken black, and von Stalhein accepted with that archaic courtesy of which he was so often capable.

Algy never took the lift in the Scotland Yard building. It was ancient, cranky, and had a tendency to stutter alarmingly as it ground its way between floors. But in this one case, he was running late for a meeting, didn't want to waste time on the stairs, and the doors were just closing when he sprinted into the lobby, so he flung himself inside, turned around and discovered that he was not alone.

The doors closed the rest of the way before he could decided if it was worth flinging himself right back out again, versus riding to the sixth floor with von Stalhein.

The lift ground into its slow movement upwards. Von Stalhein, standing in a corner with his weight on his walking stick, gave him a polite nod. Algy nodded back, for lack of anything better to do, then stared at the wall, which was better than the other option available.

If this lift moved any slower, he thought, he could probably have scaled the outside of the building in the time it was going to take to get upstairs. He could have knit an entire jumper, including shearing the sheep. Civilizations had risen and fallen in less time than it was taking this lift to make it to its destination.

There was a clunk, and the lift ground to a halt.

For a minute they both stood there. Then Algy pressed the button again.

"I don't think that's going to help," von Stalhein remarked.

"Oh? Are you an expert on lifts now?" Algy pounded the button again. "I'm supposed to be in Raymond's office --" He checked his watch. "Five minutes ago."

"It may be a bit longer."

"Shut up," Algy said grimly, and pushed the button again, then the door open button, then a variety of other buttons. None of them did anything. He leaned his forehead against the wall.

There was a rustling sound. Looking around, he found that von Stalhein had reached into an inner pocket of his coat, and Algy tensed, prepared to fight if he had to. At least if von Stalhein showed his true colors and the door opened on Algy's murdered corpse, they were literally at Scotland Yard; he would have the satisfaction of knowing that von Stalhein would at least get what was coming to him --

What emerged was not a gun or a knife, but rather, a small paper sack. Von Stalhein unrolled the top with deliberate care, then held it out, his austere face perfectly expressionless.

"Peanut?"

"This is the worst day of my life," Algy said. But he took a peanut.
