Everything is (still) MASH

Finally lured out of my giffing drought, I made a Tumblr gifset of Charles's cute little expressions in the final OR scene in 7x26 "The Party."

I've been rewatching S6-7 episodes with [personal profile] sheron, which has been absolutely glorious fun, and occasionally going back to watch an episode here or there from earlier seasons. The contrast is so interesting, and one thing it's really making me notice is how much more isolated Hawkeye is in the first couple of seasons than he is later on.

I watched the one in early season two where Hawkeye stays up operating so long that he can't fall asleep and basically wanders all over camp in a semi-psychotic daze until Trapper finally manages to successfully drug him. I think what that episode impressed on me is that he just doesn't have much of a support system compared to later seasons. The final scene with Trapper and Henry sitting with him after he falls asleep is very sweet in a gentle, low-key way. But Henry and Trapper basically *are* the entirety of his "people" in that era - the ones he can lean on, who notice when something is wrong.

(I also was thinking about that during the S1 episode where his childhood friend is killed in combat - Henry's the only one in that case who we see reach out to him or is with him when he cries. Presumably he and Trapper had some kind of aftermath too, but we don't see it; and his relationship with Trapper, while close, also isn't really as touchy-feely as some of his later friendships, either.)

It isn't like either one is inherently better, and I can see why some people like the early seasons better - it's a really different dynamic. But I've enjoyed seeing it grow over time. Also, this makes losing both Trapper and Henry in the same short span of time doubly sad; someone please hug him.

My mother preferred the Frank Burns and Trapper John and Henry Blake era because while she enjoyed Alan Alda as an actor, she often got very uncomfortable once Alan was doing more writing/directing. (Which is one reason I told her she SHOULD watch those more, to confront the discomfort, as those tended to be Social Issue episodes.)

That said, I can also see your point here on the dichotomy of early vs late fans. And Yes, Trapper with Hawkeye is far less hands-on than later seasons. I often wonder how much of that change toward physicality came from actually getting those letters from veterans, talking about long time assignments in small units.

Anyway, wandered in from Network again, loved the post.

Which episodes are those (the ones you mention)?

One of the things that's the biggest draw of the show for me is the teamy aspect, which is definitely more prominent in later seasons!

Not related to your post except that it's about MASH, but I just watched the one where Hawkeye gets temporarily swapped for the cowboy surgeon and Charles and BJ team up to prank him in order to get rid of him, and then drown Hawkeye in hugs when he gets back, and it's official: I love them all an absurd amount.

Also watched the Charles uses amphetamines episode now and yes this is my kind of story, and also I am vaguely evolving a fic where EvS does something similar on a mission when he's working alongside Biggles and co because what if he can't keep up with them and lets them down...

Oh my god that is highly RTMI and I need this story to exist so that it can be beamed into my eyeballs!

You're making me want to rewatch the show—but when? So much to watch, so little time!

I'm really enjoying reading your write-ups about the show. When I was little, if I was very good on the day a new episode aired, and put my pajamas on and brushed my teeth without complaint, I'd be allowed to stay up and watch it with Dad. Reading your posts brings back the comfort of those nights.
