Everything is (still) MASH

Finally lured out of my giffing drought, I made a Tumblr gifset of Charles's cute little expressions in the final OR scene in 7x26 "The Party."

I've been rewatching S6-7 episodes with [personal profile] sheron, which has been absolutely glorious fun, and occasionally going back to watch an episode here or there from earlier seasons. The contrast is so interesting, and one thing it's really making me notice is how much more isolated Hawkeye is in the first couple of seasons than he is later on.

I watched the one in early season two where Hawkeye stays up operating so long that he can't fall asleep and basically wanders all over camp in a semi-psychotic daze until Trapper finally manages to successfully drug him. I think what that episode impressed on me is that he just doesn't have much of a support system compared to later seasons. The final scene with Trapper and Henry sitting with him after he falls asleep is very sweet in a gentle, low-key way. But Henry and Trapper basically *are* the entirety of his "people" in that era - the ones he can lean on, who notice when something is wrong.

(I also was thinking about that during the S1 episode where his childhood friend is killed in combat - Henry's the only one in that case who we see reach out to him or is with him when he cries. Presumably he and Trapper had some kind of aftermath too, but we don't see it; and his relationship with Trapper, while close, also isn't really as touchy-feely as some of his later friendships, either.)

It isn't like either one is inherently better, and I can see why some people like the early seasons better - it's a really different dynamic. But I've enjoyed seeing it grow over time. Also, this makes losing both Trapper and Henry in the same short span of time doubly sad; someone please hug him.
